Quartile
Divided into 4 equal parts.
In a distribution 25% fall below the lower quartile (also called 1st quartile).
50% of the distribution fall below the middle quartile (also called 2nd quartile).
75% of the distribution falls below the upper quartile (also called the 3rd quartile).

The figure below presents how deciles divide a data set equally into 10 parts.

It can be seen that there are 9 score points that divide

a distribution into 10 equal parts.
ILLUSTRATING MEASURES OF POSITION
Percentile
There are 99 score points that divide a data set into 10 equal parts which are called the
1st percentile, second percentile, and so on until 99th percentile.
Find Q 3 , P25 , and D 7
There are various ways in determining the percentiles. One if it weighted average estimate
(linear interpolation).

CLASS INTERVAL Number of observations

Class Interval Size: 4 n = 125

Step 1: Construct the less than cumulative frequency distribution (<CF).

Step 2: Compute nk where n is the total number of observations and k is
100
the subscript (pk).
Step 3: Starting from the top, locate the value in the <CF column that is
greater than or equal to nk for the first time. The class interval
100
corresponding to that value is the k th percentile (pkthclass).
Step 4: Approximate the kth percentile (pk) using the formula
where, Pk = LCB Pk + C [
( 100
nk
) - < CF - 1
f Pk
Pk

]
LCB Pk - The lower class boundary of pk class. th

C - The size of the class interval.

n - The total number of observations in the distribution.
k - The percentile of interest.
<CF - The <CF of the class preceding the p class.
Pk-1 k
th

f - The frequency of the percentile
