PURPOSE
This Method Statement aims to detail exactly how to carry out Deep Excavation. The proper procedure is observed so
that no activity or inspection is neglected during deep excavation. That this Method Statement assures the owner that
the Contractor is dedicated to the Quality of the finished Project to meet the demand of the owner.
SCOPE
This Method Statement includes two methods to consider for deep excavation multiple benches and the use of Sheet
piles for workers, equipment, and structures protection during construction.
PROCEDURE
1. Before the start of Deep Excavation for a certain structure to construct there are some important points to
consider such as total depth of excavation, water discharge, stability of the soil, excavation plan and cables,
pipes and underground utilities that are possible under the project site must be checked from responsible
agencies.
2. The Surveyor needs to locate the coordinate of the structure and establish a level reference and benchmarks
must be away from excavation to avoid secure the coordinates of the structure being established. There are
two options when carrying out deep excavation one is multiple benches and second is the use of sheet piles
these two methods are used to protect workers, equipment, and structures from cave-ins during construction.
2.1. Multiple Benches are considered in wide areas where no obstruction structure is adjacent to the project.
2.1.1. The Site Engineer will start excavation considering the computed dimensions and slope for multiple
benches prepared. At the same time locate the access road route on one side of the area for trucks to use
on disposal of excavated soil/rocks materials.

2.1.2. While excavation is ongoing the Site Engineer must be observing if any pipes, cables, and underground
utilities may be cut off then inform the Client’s Engineer to coordinate to concern agencies if the
obstructing pipes, cables, and underground utilities are in use or abandoned.
2.1.3. If the excavation is going deeper and the whole area is flooded, observed the volume increased in due
time then record the volume produced per hour. In this regard, the capacity of the dewatering pump can
be identified, on how many numbers of water pumps and what size of pipe diameter are to be prepared
to be used. The dewatering system must be laid by trained personnel around the area being excavated to
avoid flooding, after all are set then continue excavation. The water discharge must be away from the area
to avoid retaliation for the water in the area being excavated and the disposal must be approved by the
Client Engineer.

2.1.4. Since the dewatering system is installed, assigned personnel to be monitoring the pumps, and if any
broken pumps are observed they are replaced immediately to avoid flooding the excavated area. Also,
during the night, lights must be set near the water pumps for monitoring purposes.

2.1.5. In case excavation goes deeper and another bench is created, and water starts to flood the newly
excavated area, then another set of dewatering systems must be installed. Do the same strategy by
observing the volume of flood produced and then providing the number of water pumps to be used with
the lighting system for monitoring purposes. The water discharge area must be the same as previously
identified by the Client Engineer but if the area cannot contain the water due to volume produced by the
additional dewatering system, then locating a new discharge area is a must.
2.1.6. The dewatering system must not be dismantled until the structure is completed and inspected and
approved by the Client Engineer.
2.2. Excavation with Sheet Pile Soil Support- this is carried out if the type of soil is unstable and the project area
is limited.

2.2.1. Before the start of excavation confirm first with the Client Engineer if no pipes, cables, and underground
utilities may be cut off and ask for a letter for confirmation from the Client Engineer.
2.2.2. The Site Engineer will inform the backhoe operator to excavate 1 m below the natural grade level where
the locations of the pile sheet are to be installed.
2.2.3. Use I – Beam or equivalent as a guide for aligning the sheet piles by the grid line provided by the Surveyor.
When the I – Beam is placed in its position use a shorter sheet pile temporarily to be used as support on
both ends of the I – Beam to avoid movement during sheet pile installation. The I – Beam and
the support sheet pile will be then moved to the next location after completing all the sheet pile in that
length is completed.
2.2.4. A vibratory hammer attached to a backhoe is usually used in this kind of work activity. Before installing a
sheet pile, determine first the depth requirement of the structure base then add 3m or more or as
described by the Client Engineer to be able to know the length of the sheet pile to be installed. The
additional length would act as additional support or footing for the sheet pile erected.

2.2.5. When installing the sheet pile drill first at least half of the sheet pile length for easier to connect the next
sheet pile to the socket. This strategy is done to eliminate the verticality alignment problem during
hammering the sheet pile that when the sheet pile installed is not vertically erected then it is hard to join
the next pile on the socket. If the entire length has been completed install half the length of the sheet pile,
then, start to completely hammer down each pile sheet to its desired level. If one length is done, do it also
on the next length until completing all the areas that require sheet pile. Leave an area for access road
route for trucks to use during disposal of excavated soil/rocks.
2.2.6. When the sheet piles are all installed then if required add additional lateral support for safety purposes.
2.2.7. If the excavation is starting to go deeper and the whole area is flooded, observed the volume increased in
due time then record the volume produced per hour. In this regard, the capacity of the dewatering pump
can be identified, on how many numbers of water pumps and what size of pipe diameter are to be
prepared to be used. The dewatering system must be laid by trained personnel around the area being
excavated to avoid flooding after all are set then continue excavation. The water discharge must be away
from the area to avoid retaliate of the water in the area being excavated and the disposal must be
approved by the Client Engineer.

2.2.8. Since the dewatering system is installed, assigned personnel to be monitoring the pumps, and if any
broken pumps are observed they are replaced immediately to avoid flooding the excavated area. Also,
during the night, lights must be set near the water pumps for monitoring purposes.

2.2.9. In case excavation reach the desired bottom level and water is starting to flood the newly excavated area,
then another set of dewatering system must be installed. Do the same strategy by observing the volume
of flood produced and then providing the number of water pumps to be used with lighting systems for
monitoring purposes. The water discharge area must be the same as previously identified by the Client
Engineer but if the area cannot contain the water due to volume produced by the additional dewatering
system, then locating a new discharge area is a must.
2.2.10. The dewatering system must not be dismantled until the structure is completed and inspected and
approved by the Client Engineer and backfilling had started. The dewatering system at the bottom part
may partially remove when backfilling starts as long as it will not affect the moisture of the soil. Backfilling
is done per layer so if the next layer is not affected by the water, then the dewatering system can be
removed.
2.2.11. The sheet pile must be removed only if backfilling is completed.
