EHCPB 3B – Chemical Process Design: Principles

Tutorial 2

Question 1

A shell-and-tube heat exchanger has just been designed to heat 20 tons/hr of water from 15 0C
to 850C. The heating is accomplished by passing hot engine oil, which is available at 160 0C,
through the shell-side of the one shell four tube pass heat exchanger type.

The newly designed heat exchanger has the following specifications:-

Heat exchanger type : Split ring float heat 1 – 4 exchanger

Number of tubes : 200
Tube length : 4.88m
Tube OD : 19.05mm
Tube ID : 14.83mm
Tube pitch : Triangular, pitch of 23.18mm
Tube material : Monel, thermal conductivity of 30 W/m.K
Baffle spacing : 140mm
Baffle cut : 25%

(Tube – (Shell – side)

side)
Physical Properties water engine oil

Specific heat (J/kg.0C) 4181 2350

Thermal conductivity (W/m.0C) 0.643 0.138
Viscosity (N.s/m2) 0.548 x 10-3 3.25 x 10-2
Density (kg/m3) 995 730

1. If the oil leaves the exchanger at 1000C, what is its flow rate?
2. Evaluate if this heat exchanger will be suitable to accomplish the desired duty.
3. It is estimated that after 18 months of service, the heat exchanger will be fouled on both
shell and tube side. The fouling will affect the heat transfer in the exchanger. A shell side
fouling factor hod = 2857 m2.0C/W and a tube side fouling factor hid = 5000 m2.0C/W is
predicted. Will the heat exchanger still work acceptably without cleaning? (Support answer
with calculations)
4. The allowable pressure drop in the tube side of this exchanger is 70kPa. Check by
calculations if this allowable pressure drop limit will be exceeded or not.
= 0.65 m/s
