Reflection Paper
Jose Rizal: RA 1425/Rizal Law

This reflection paper of RA 1425’s, also known as the Rizal Law, which consist of

his importance in the Philippines. Rizal Law aimed to persuade a nationalist and

patriotic values to the Filipino students by experiencing the life and works of our

national hero Jose Rizal. Rizal’s writing, such as his novels Noli Me Tanger and El

Filibusterismo, are crucial to society issues like colonialism, corruption, and religious

abuse, sparking discussions about social justice and reform.

Based on the RA 1425 (House Bill No. 5561, Senate Bill No. 448) or Rizal Law, it is

required course for Filipino student which was mandated and was passed on June 12,

1956. The Republic Act 1425 consists of 6 Sections which directs all public and private

schools, colleges, and universities to offer courses or subjects, particularly his novel Noli

Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo which included in Section 1. The Significance in Section

2 is to ensure accessibility and foster critical engagement with Rizal’s uncensored

viewpoints. In Section 3, It mandates printing cheap editions and distributing them

freely through community organizations. Section 4 protects the integrity and

authenticity of Rizal’s original works against censorship or misrepresentation. The

Significance of Section 5 demonstrated government commitment to upholding the Rizal

Law and ensuring its efficient execution. In the last section, it states the law take effect

upon approval which approved by Pres. Ramon Magsaysay in June 12, 1956.

Based in the story of the Rizal Law, HUKBALAHAP/Communist insurgency, and by

the colonial mentality of the Filipinos, that country was ravaged in 1950’s which

sponsored by Sen. Claro M Recto and Sen. Jose P. Laurel was enacted in June 12, 1956,

which it is was called for a return to patriotic values by Filipino heroes like Jose Rizal. It

instill Heroism, Nationalism and Patriotism among the youth that the original author

saw.

Overall, I learned that in this Rizal Law, It provide insights on how to deal with the

current problems and helps to understand better to ourselves as Filipino. Engaging with

Rizal’s works encourages our critical thinking, political, and religious issues. By

understanding the Rizal’s perspectives, students will have their consciousness to

question the status and advocate for change.
