2 LAUNCHING SYSTEM

A summary of the most important particulars of the launching

appliancè as wetl as thoÈe of the craft to be Launched is given in
the preceding chapter.
The ãppliance is capable of handling a life saving craft of
specified dimensions and capacity, the latter comprising a total
of persons, as specified on Page 4.
oetãils of desigã as weII as further particulars of t.he equipment
follow from the accompanying documents.

2. ]. GENERAIJITÏES

The life saving system is designed in t.hat way that aII necessary
functions for hoisting and lowering of the craft are fulfilled.
The system corresponds to the enclosed arrangement drawing.
This D-CRm type davit system is suitable for launching a boat
including the full complement of persons from the embarkation
position to the water level. The survival craft is slewed from the
èmbart<ation position to the lowering position by means of hydraulic
'stored powei". The lowering procedure is performed due to gravity.
Both procedures, the slewing and lowering, can be controlled from
either the winch position, or from within the craft.
The entry to the survival craft should be wide enough to handle a
streLcher on, carrying a wounded person.
Recovery of the craft is controlled from the push button box on the
crane. Éy pushing the "hoisting"-button the boat can be lifted to
the highèsl posiiion. By reaching this position, the electric
hoistiãg motõr is switched off, due to the limit switch on the
davit aim. Any remaining hoisting distance, for stowing purposes,
should be overcome by hoisting with the hand crank.
For bringing the craft to the inboard position, the davit can be
slewed by means of the hydraulic slewing motor, placed on the I^Iorm
shaft. A hydraulic control lever has been installed on the davit
accordingly.
For the ieãsons of safety, the design of the button / Iever is such
that an immediate braking power is available as soon as actuation
of the button/Lever is discontinued; "dead-man"-t1pe controls are
being applied.
To assure a minimum of maintenance aII shafts are of stainless
steef. The sheaves include life time lubricated bushes. This way
further greasing is reduced to the minimum.
Additionãtty, tÉere is a possibility to mount grease nipples on the
shafts.

2.2 IJAUNCHING INSTRUCTIONS

To agsure a safe and well-executed launching, for each davit

system, an instruction plate has been installed. This instruction
piate, showing the exacL sequence of the launching procedure is
placed
-ey near the embarkation position.
foltowing the instructionÈ one by one safe launching is guaran-
tãed. Wevertheless the complete procedures for a safe launching
and recovering wilt be reviewed in the next paragraph.

2.3 BOAT I,AUNCHING AND RECOVERY

For a safe launching the following actions should be taken by the

boat handling crew:
2.3 .L PREPARATIONS BEFORE I,AUNCHÏNG
- Tighten the boat faII by means of the crank.
- Remove all protection covers
- Relieve, if- possible, the tensile force in the lashings,
by twisting the turnbuckles.
- Open the Jfip hooks in the lashings and make sure the
*ire ropes create no obstruction, blocking the turning
out procedure.
- check whether the boat chocks do not obstruct the turn-
ing-out procedure.
- Chéck anã remove any obstruction/rail work.
- check boat drains and whether the appropriate hook has
been engaged in the boat suspension.

2.3 .2 LAUNCH]NG PROCEDURE

- Embarkation.
- Open t.he COCK-VALVE of the hydraulic " stored-powerrl
slewing system. After actuation of the valve, the turn-
ing-out piocedure should be continued as soon as possi-
ble.
- Lift the slewing control lever of the 4/3 HAND OPERATED
DIRECTIONAL CONÍROL VALVE, for which two options are
available:
1) From within the craft: puII firmly on the YELLOW re-
mote controi grap. By acLuatíng the lever, Lhe slew-
ing conLinues up to the lowering position. The slew-
ing stops as soon as the actuation is discontinued.
2l Frõm thè crane: Iift the lever by hand, stopping re-
mains possible. The Lurning-out procedure is only aI-
lowed witn a crew in the craft of maximum 6 persons '
- Lift the brake iever of the winch, for whiclt i-r^/o options
are avail-able:
1) From within the craft: pull firmly on the RED remote
control grip, to start the descend. By releasing the
remote cõntiol grip stopping is still possibte.
2) From near the winch: Iift the brake lever by hand;
stopping is still possible. By actuating the remote
conLrot- Iever by hand, the descend wiII be activated
and continued until the craft is waterborne.
- Start engine of survival craft, following the instruc-
tions of the boat builder.
- Release the boat hook when waterborne.

2.3 .3 RECOVERY PROCEDURE

- The recovery of any rescue boat is only allowed with a
maximum of 6 persons in the boat.
- Make sure the wire rope falls contain slack and fasten
the on-Ioad release hook in the boat suspension.
- Start hoisting from the control stand on the davit. En-
sure each wire rope turn remaining permanently on the
winch drum to be kept. close to the adjacent one until
rope slack is eliminated by rope tautening.
- whèn reaching the highest hoisting position the electric
driven hoisting procedure ís automatically stopped by
t.he limit switch on the davit arm.
- Check whether the hoisting wire has been spooled up as
appropriate.
- Start slewing from the hydraulic power pack on the
davit. Ensure no obstructions block the path of the
boat.
- Place the boat on the boat chocks; some additional
cranking with the co-delivered hand crank might be nec-
essary.

2.4 GRIPE GEÀR (Ï,ASHTNG GEAR)

When not actuatly in use, the craft should be securely stowed foras
sea trail; the wãy in which the gripe lines have to be applied,
welL as further aetaifs, follow from the accompanying arrangement
plan and the specific drawing of the gripe gear itself.
By applying the gripe gear, the craft and the davit arms are
sècured in a seaworthY Position.
To prepare the appliance for craft launching, the craft has to be
set-reãdy first Éy slipping the gripe lines, i .e. by releasing the
slip hook/turnbuckle incorporated in them.

2.5 REMOTE CONTROI,

For activating the launching procedure from within the surwival

craft two remote control systems have been foreseen:
1) Slewing system, the YELLOW control lever can be acti-
vated 'by- the craft handling crew from inside the
craft.
2) Lowering system, the RED control lever can be acti-
vated by lfre craf t handling crew f rom inside t'he
craft.
For reason of personal safety never attempt to wrap the control
Iirr. to.rnd fin*gers or hand, Ìor any obstruction on the outside
could lead to ãerious woundings thèn. Use the control wire grip
only as shown in the accompanying drawing "actuaLing the reÌnoLe

2.6 WINCH

To satisfy the launching and recovery of the survival craft, the

Iaunching apptiance is equipped with a winch, for enabling the
craft suspended by the wire rope falls, to be Iaunched and recov-
ered as appropriate.
fn essence the launching of each Life saving craft occurs by
gravity only.
For the purpose of craft recovery by eiectric power, the winch is
executed with an electric motor.
For the purpose of craft recovery by manual cranking, the hand
crank prõvided with the system is inserted to the squared exLen-
sion of the hoisting winch shaft and rotated as appropriate, the
facility is back-kick Proof.
The winch system will be explained further in this manual.

3 WINCH SYSTEM

3.1 BASIC WINCH DESCRIPTION

For a better comprehension of the Lext below, it is advisable to
unfold the accompanying illustratíon sheet "kinematic diagram of
winch" inctuded further in this manual.
Basicatly, the winch comPrises a:
- wire rope coiling gear; the drum or barrel
- speed reducer gear
- safety gear
- brake gear
- motor power unit
- manual hoisting facility

3 .1.1 DRUM
To coil, accommodate, ot unwind the necessary wire rope
falIs, the winch is equipped with a drum, the shaft of
which is being supported in roller type bearings.
3 .I.2 SPEED REDUCER GEAR
The speed reducer gear employs an appropriate a corfven-
tional gear train.
3.1.3 SAFETY GEAR (CENTRÏFUGAL BRAKE)
To the purpose of gravity lowering, the winch includes a
governor biake for keeping the lowering speed within per-
missible limits.
3.1.4 BRAKE GEAR (STOP BRAKE)
To the purpose of holding the survival craft in any posi-
tion a freewheel coupling has been installed.
By lifting the braké lever a spindle type axial mechanism
opens the coupling between the gear train and this free-
wheet coupting; lowering due to gravity with a speed gov-
erned by the safety gear is possible.
By releãsing the brake lever the lever drops back to the
nèutral position; the coupling beLween the gear train and
the freewheet coupling prevents lowering by gravity. Some
assistance in positíoning the brake lever in the neutral
position may be required, but pushing the lever downwards
witrr high force is not al]owed since this will cause ex-
cessive wear in the bearings of the spindle type axial
mechanism.
3 .1.5 MOTOR POWER UNIT
The motor power unit is represented by a squirrel cage
electric motor, creaLing the possibility of hoisting the
survival craft with a speed of minimum 18 m/min. Lowering
by means of this motor is not possible.
d-i davit international gú'bh pg. 17
ManuaL
s'ystem rescue boat handlinq system D-CRn. 0L

3.1.6 MANUAL CRANKÏNG GEAR

Apart. from hoisting the load by motor po\^/er, Lhere is also
a back-kick proof manual hoisting gear, enabling the craft
to be recovered by manual cranking as need be. To that
purpose the hand crank provided with the system has to be
inserted on the squared extension shaft of the winch and
rotated aS long as necessary. If not required, the crank-
handle should Èe stowed in its supports on the winch. Ïf
inserted the electric motor can not be activated. During
gravity lowering the hand crank will not rotate, but nev-
erthefess it should be in Íts stowage supBorls.

3.2 FIJNCTIONÀL DESCRIPTION

The individual modes of operation are as follows:

3 .2.L HOISTÏNG BY ELECTRIC POVüER
Electric motor rotation enacted by actuation of the pugh
button on the conlrol box results in a corresponding drum
rotation. Lifting the brake lever at the same time is not
allowed, since this makes hoisting impossible.
?)) LOWERING BY GRAVÏTY
For the purpose of lowering the load by gravity, the cou-
pling is-released by lifting its control lever, which afso
permits the spindl-e mechanism to 'rotate.
Às a result: the load is no longer restrained by t.he free-
wheel coupling and the drum is free to pay out the load.
For safety reãsons the design is such that in case of dis-
continuing the Iifting of the lever the descent of t.he
survival craft is stopped immediately; the design is of
the "dead-man" type.
3 .2.3 HOIST]NG BY MANUAL CRANKÏNG
Manual crank rotation coincides with the corresponding
drum rotation, with the crank engaged on the gear shaft.
For the purpose of inserting the hand crank, t.he safety
device actualor screening the shaft entry has to be turned
aside, which prevents at the same time the operation of
the electric motor.

5 BRÀKE GEAR AND SPTNDI.E TYPE ÀXÏAT, I,IFTING MECHÀNISM

The frequency of inspection checks and adjustment activit.ies
strongly depènds primarily on the frequency and extent of use, the
way oi ãctuãting the controls and similar factors; as is customary
witfr such tçj-nd õf equipment, your own experience wiII provide f or
an optimum frequency of servicing and maintenance activities to be
assessed
To start with, a Lhree-month interval is recommended

5.1" INSPECTION CHECK & AD.]USTÌ{ENT

please see to that purpose the accompanying illustration sheet. To
ensure a reliable performance of the couplíng, the brake lever has
to remain in a horizontal position, or in a position positive of
the horizontal.
Due to a wearing process occurred between the brake t-ining and the
counter-part. faèeÈ, the brake lever weight drops to a certain
extent until finalty it drops back to a position of approx. 15
degrees below t.he horizontal position.
Adjustment is absolutely necessary then, to guarantee a safe
performance of the brake gear under aLL circumstances.
To adjust the brake lever position proceed as fol-Lows:
- Make sure brake lever weight is in lowest position.
- Remove brake lever by loosening the 3 bolts on the pivot
H3f,ï:":tll?ï"t'l'"ïã' in a, positive to horizontar, posi -
tion and remount the 3 bolts ,

5.2 PRECAUTIONS DURING REMOVAI, OF TIIE EOUPÏ,ING ASSEMBIJY

If in the course of the adjustment activit.ies the coupling has to
be dismounted, it is imperative to take every safety precaution to
prevent any accidenL to occur, e. g. by locking the davit arm in
the inboard position.

6 RECOMI{ENDED I.UBRICAì{TS
For the recommended oil and grease lubricants, please see the
accompanying Iist made up in compliance with recommendations by
the oit ãompanies mentioned therein. For obvious reasons, the Iist
can not be èxhaustive; equivalent products by other recognised
companies are acceptable as weIl.
Lubricants have been devetoping unceasingty; it is advisable to
consult your lubricant supplier, in particular whenever operation
at extremes of temperature should be envisaged.
With respect to the particulars mentioned in the list, your
tubricanl supplier will be pleased to assist you in making a
choice of thè lubricant types optimally suited to the ship's area
of navigation.

7 MAINTENANCE

In this chapter the required maintenance will be described; it is

to be executed by t.he shiprs crew.
Even though the interval of checking and maintaining the p arts of
a davit system depends on the frequency and way of operati o[, vte
have t.ried to give an estimation of the required inLervals

7.1- MAINTENANCE GROUP ]., ONE WEEK SERVICE

7 .L.L HYDRAULÏC FLUTD LEVEL

The l-evel of the hydraulic fluid in the tank, which is
situated on the crane column, should be checked every week.
Fo:: this pul:pose a gauge gJ.ass has been j nstal..lecl on the
tank.
7 .r.2 HYDRAUL]C PRESSURE
The pressure of the hydraulic fluid, stored in the accumu-
Iator, must be checked. The pressure should be between the
values mentioned on the hydraulic diagram.

7.2 IIAINTENANCE GROUP 2, ONE MONTII SERVICE

7 .2.L ACCUMULATOR / PRESSURE ALARM

The function of the hydraulic accumulator and of the pres-
sure alarm should be checked. By draining the accumulator
or by turning out of the davit the pressure wil-l drop in-
stantly. The fol-lowing checks can be executed:
- Functioning of the manometer, which shows the pressure
in the accumulator.
- By using the accumulator the oil pressure decreases to a
certain value. At this value the pressure suddenly drops
down to 0 bars. The l-owest value measured is the gas
pref iII pressure. It should be approx. rrPorr bars (see
the hydraulic diagram) .
- Whenthe pressure drops, the electric switch starts the
electric motor. Functioning of both components can be
checked this way.
- When the pressure drops, âr alarm light on one of the
ship's main panel enlights.

7.3 MAINTENANCE GROUP 3, THREE MONTHS SERVICE

7.3-I DAVïTS (greasing)

The davits have been provided with maintenance free, PÍ€-
Iubricated, bushes, running on stainless steel shafts.
so: a special maintenance of the turning parts is not nec-
essary. Nevertheless, alI shafts have a possibility for
grease nipple mounting.
AII thread ends, requíred for adjustment purposes, must
always be kept greased.
Special attention should be given to t.he items as men-
tioned befow:
- hand operated valves of the hydraulic system
7 .3.2 WINCHES (greasing)
AII lubrication points, if âry, must be lubricated by
means of a high piessure grease gun at regular intervals.
7 .3.3 WIRE ROPES (greasing)
Rope maintenance encompasses re-l-ubrication and if neces-
saiy prior cleaning; fúrthermore inspection and adjustment
of -all rope reeving components like drums, sheaves etc.
Re-Iubricaliott sfroutd emptoy a greage or dressing thaL is
compatible with the rnanüfaõturers lubricant. The coating
*usl be such as not to impair the visual inspection of the
ropes surface. The apptieo grease should be slightly
freãted beforehand. Ropes must be renewed in case of dete-
rioration or at intervals of noL more than 5 years.
7 .3.4 SHEAVES
Sheaves must be turning freely and truly and the grooves
should seat the rope properly, A damaged sheave must be
exchanged.
7.3.5 OTL I,EVEI, CHECK
The oil level in the gearbox of t.he winch must be checked.
For t.his purpose a IeveI plug has been installed on the
winch housing.
7 .3.6 BR.AKE GEAR
The brake gear and the spindle-type axial tifting mecha-
nism should be checked periodically.
The checking procedure has been described in paragraph

7.4 MAINTENANCE GROUP 4, ONE YEAR SERVICE

7 .4.1 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM (oil change)

The complete quantity of hydrautic oil must be changed
once a year. Before draining the oil tank, the accumulator
should be drained; its content is automatically led to the
tank when the cock valve "discharge bladder accumulator'r
is opened (see hydrautic díagram). During the changing of
the oil, the following should be kept in mind:
DÏRT IS POISON TO EVERY HYDRAUL]C INSTALLAT]ON
Only absolute and perfect cleanlíness will ensure a fault-
less operation of the equiPment.
'74-) WÏNCHES/SLEWÏNGGEAR (OiI ChANgC)
AII gearboxes have the tooth wheels running in an oiI
baLh; the oil- must $e changer] once a year" Before fill.inq
the gearbox with new oil, it should be cleaned thoroughly
with scouring oil and the sediment removed from the bottom
of the gearbóx. The gearbox has been provided with a drain
plug on the lower siáe. The quantity of oil has been indi-
cated on page 4 under "launching appliance datart.
7.4.3 SAFETY BRAKE
The safety brake linings should be checked on wear. The
method is described in chapter 4.
7 .4.4 ÏNSTALLING/CHANGING OF WÏRE ROPES
special attention is drawn to the necessity for checking
that the wire rope falls are running on the drum from t.he
correct side. This must be checked before unreeving the
rope falls.
whèn wedge cases are used for connecting the wire rope'
t.he wire rope which is under strain, must form one line
with one side of the wedge casing.
The windings on the drum must be laid tightly against each
other, they should not be laid over one another.
It is advisable to unreeve the wire ropes once a year and
to turn the wires before they are reeved anew. (if possi-
bre).
It is also advisable to cut 30 cm (f foot) from each wire
rope before they are reeved anew.
7.4-5 PA]NTING
When repainting the davits, winches etc., it frequently
happens t.hat a further coat of paint is applied over !h"
p.è.rio.ts one, so that the free clearances between moving
iarts are entirely filled up with paint. Consequently in
the long run the moving parts seize up.
When repainting speciát attention must therefore be paid
to the prior removal of the old coat of paint near the
moving parts, âL least on the dangerous areas- The grease
nipplãs must never be painted, to avoid a stoppage in the
grease channel.
à red circle should be painted around each grease nipple.

7 -4.6 SPARE PARTS

Periodicatly the presence of spare parts should be
checked. For this purpose our recommendation can be found
in the chapter "SPARE PARTS''.
7.5 HOSE LINES (REPLACING)

Hose lines should be replaced in regularly intervals, even if no

defects are visible. At Least after 5 years the hose lines should
be renewed. For this procedure the date of manufacturing is deci-
sively which is marked on the hose cover. The way of marking
depends on the producer, for example:
4Q97 = 4th Quarter of L997
25/09/L998 = the date directly

8 SPARE PARTS

For each lifesaving system the following spare parts were recom-
mended and they should be on stock in the ship.
