Module 10 – Assisting with Medications Assignment –

Part II
Name: Manisha Jamarkattel
❖ Choose a drug of particular interest to you that you would like to research. The drug may be either
an OTC or prescribed medication. It can be of any classification and administered by any route.
Ensure that you have sufficient resources (3 sources required) to complete your assignment.

➢ I’d like to delve into the medication known as Alprazolam, commonly sold under the brand
name Xanax. Here’s the breakdown:

1. Name and classification of the drug:

• Name: Alprazolam
• Classification: Alprazolam belongs to the class of medications called benzodiazepines.

2. Common indications for this drug:

• Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
• Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
• Anxiety associated with depression

3. Frequency of administration:
• Usually, Alprazolam is taken 2 to 4 times daily, contingent upon the individual's condition and
treatment response.

4. Route(s) of administration:
• Alprazolam is usually administered orally.

5. Special instructions for administration:

• It should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
• It's important not to crush, chew, or break the extended-release tablets, as this could lead to
too much of the drug being released at once.

6. Possible side effects:

• Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, headache, and trouble
concentrating.
• More serious side effects may include memory problems, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, and
signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing).
7. Contraindications:
• Alprazolam should not be used in individuals with a history of allergic reaction to
benzodiazepines or with acute narrow-angle glaucoma.
• It is contraindicated in pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus.

8. Sources used for the assignment:

• Canadian Psychiatric Association. (2013). Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(5th ed.). Ottawa, ON: Canadian Psychiatric Publishing.
• Canadian National Library of Medicine. (2022). MedlinePlus: Alprazolam.
• Greenblatt, D. J., & Shader, R. I. (2015). Benzodiazepines: Basic Pharmacological Properties and
Therapeutic Implications. Psychopharmacology: The Fourth Generation of Progress..

9. Reason for choosing this drug to research:

• Alprazolam is a widely used medication for anxiety disorders, and it’s important to understand
its indications, administration, and potential side effects due to its prevalence and potential for
misuse.

10. Most interesting fact learned about this medication:

• Benzodiazepines like alprazolam work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid
(GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits brain activity. This mechanism helps to reduce anxiety
and promote relaxation, but it also underscores the potential for dependence and withdrawal
symptoms with long-term use.
