Consider the following teaching scenario and then answer the questions (A & B) below.
You are teaching English Grammar Course to high school students. And one of the common students’
mistakes you always encounter is the misuse of some English prepositions. This is due to what is so-
called interference of the first language (i.e. Arabic) and its impact on the foreign language they are
learning (i.e. English). For example, the misuse of “with” is illustrated in the following sentences:
The linguistic phenomena “interference” is defined as “the automatic transfer, due to habit, of the
surface structure of the first language onto the surface of the target language.” (Dulay, Burt & Krashen
1982, p. 98).
*NOTE: This assignment is the first assessment in this course (ELTM) You need to answer in two formats: 1. Essay Writing
and 2. Presentation (Use any presentation software to show the significant issues related). The Written Assignment should be
emailed to me by the 6th of Shawwal (the 15th of April). The presentation will be on the 12th of Shawwal (the 21st of April).
YOUR ANSWER:
For example, regarding the examples you mentioned above, I would teach the students the prepositional
collocation (interested in), but first bring the whole example then split the sentences and explain it to the
students as well as in the second example. The method that I am going to use is the Task-based learning
method with its 3 stages Pre-task, Task cycle and Language focus to engage allow the students get
engaged into the task and trying to let them avoid the automatic transfer and grammar translation from
Arabic to English. I believe this is an effective method which I will describe in detail on answering the
next question.
2
B- Before using group work, I should first start the lesson following the 3 stages of Task-based learning
method which I mentioned earlier on the previous answer considering the supervision of the teacher to
make sure of the students’ awareness of using the correct prepositions and understanding how the task
works. Now let me express the 3 stages below:
1-Pre-task: In this stage, I will introduce the topic prepositions in English in general and then choose
the kind of the prepositions which I will teach for instance (Prepositions of time) with providing some
examples on the whiteboard for in, on and at like the following:
So regarding on the 3 examples above and because we are dealing with teaching English as EFL not
ESL, I will explain for the students in both languages English and Arabic that (at) is used with hours,
(on) is used with days and finally (in) is used with months and years. After explaining the topic, I am
going to explain the task that students are going to do with providing some examples. The task will be
matching the correct preposition using 2 two cards to complete the correct sentence so if we take the
first example on number 1 above we would say in the first card (I will meet you at) and the other card
(10AM) it will not be exactly the same time but the same structure of the sentence which I want the
students to understand and achieve at the end of the lesson.
2-Task-cycle:
In this stage am going to divide the students into 3 groups. Prepare a set of cards. Write a sentence with
preposition onto one card and the rest of the sentence onto a separate card. Give 10 cards to each group.
I will lLet them do the task while monitoring from a distancethem. The students in each group should
form 5 correct sentences by matching 2 cards. Once they finish, they lay out the cards on the desk in
front of them. And each group can report what they have answered to the other groups orally and write
their answers on the whiteboard one group at a time controlled by the teacher.
3-Language focus: In this stage the groups will examine each other, discuss the answers and the teacher
will finally analysis all answers and give feedback to the students to clarify the correct answers to the
students.
3
By doing Task-based learning method and the activity of matching 2 cards correctly the students will be
able to identify the correct usage of the preposition and avoid the automatic transfer and gradually
ignore the habit of translating the prepositions based on the structure of the first language (Arabic).
