Science – Grade 5
Quarter 4 – Self Learning Module 8: Effects of Soil Erosion on Living Things!
Welcome to the Science Grade 5 Self Learning Module 8 on Effects of Soil Erosion on
Living things!
This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
Welcome to the Science Grade 5 Self Learning Module 8 on Effects of Soil Erosion on
Living things!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.
Recap - This section will measure what learnings and skills that
you understand from the previous lesson.
Lesson - This section will discuss the topic for this module.
Posttest - This will measure how much you have learned from
the entire module.
EXPECTATIONS
This Self Learning Module will focus mostly on discussing and explaining the
effects of soil erosion on living things.
After going through this Self Learning Module, you are expected to:
1. describe the effects of soil erosion on living things;
2. explain the effects of soil erosion on plants and animals; and
3. appreciate the importance of soil erosion on living things.
PRETEST
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.
3. During rainy season, landslide commonly occur. Trees can prevent soil erosion.
How?
A. They bear some fruits.
B. They make the soil rich.
C. Their leaves and branches absorb water.
D. Their roots absorb water and hold the soil.
4. What are the possible effects of erosion to plants, animals, and people?
A. The natural habitat of plants and animals are destroyed.
B. Travelling by land becomes difficult because rocks are destroyed.
C. Farmers cannot grow more crops because the topsoil was carried by
erosion.
D. All of the above.
5. Plants are very important in production of food, we need to plant and cultivate
them. Plants do not grow well in ________________?
A. Fertile soil
B. Rich soil
C. Subsoil
D. Topsoil
RECAP
Let us try to check if you can still recall our previous topic, by doing this
simple activity to help you freshen up your mind. Ready? Get your notebook or your
paper and pen then be ready to record or write your answer.
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct, and FALSE if the statement
is incorrect. Put your answer on the line before the number.
__________2. Small volumes of soil and sand are transported when they are
__________3. When burrowing animals dig the ground, some rock and soil
erosion.
Very Good! You can still remember our previous lesson. Now, let us proceed
with our new topic and learn more about the effects of heat and electricity on objects
and people.
LESSON
Natural erosion caused by water and wind has carved the earth’s surface and
created the landforms we see today. The mountains, valleys, plains, and plateaus are
the landforms created by natural erosion millions of years ago. Man accelerated
erosion by activities altering the environment in almost everywhere he settled.
Plants get most of its nutrients from the topsoil. The topsoil contains the
organic materials produced by dead plants and animals. However, this topsoil is
usually carried away by wind and water. Once the topsoil is gone, the nutrients for
plants will be carried away as well.
Too much soil erosion makes the soil unable to hold or absorb water. This
makes the soil dry, coarse, and eventually unfit for vegetation. In addition, sediments
that are washed away by water can clog irrigation systems and can further inhibit
the plant’s water supply.

The effect of erosion on plants would mean less food production. This can
affect animals and humans since plants are their main source of food and nutrients.
Aside from the lack of food supply, people who depend on farming as their
source of livelihood will have problems if they do not have a healthy and fertile soil
to plant on.
Another negative effect of erosion is the prevalence of mine tailings. Mine
tailings are the mineral wastes or leftovers after the mining process. Erosion brought
about by water can wash mine tailings to nearby bodies of water and pollute them.
Polluted seas and rivers can affect aquatic plants and animals, as well as the potable
water supply of animals and humans.
