My friends and I are in year 6 in a primary school in London.
This year, we have got a new teacher, Matilda. We start
school at 9:00 and we study with Matilda in our classroom.
Last week, we decided three important rules. First, we have
to listen to our teacher. Second, we have to work hard and
third, we have to be kind to other children. In year six, every
child has got a job. I have to tidy the books in the library.
Sometimes the children from year one visit the library and I
read stories to them. It's a good fun. We eat lunch in the
dining room. After lunch we have to clean our tables. Then we go to the playground and chat to friends
or play games. We don't have to be quiet in the playground. At a quarter to two we have to go back to
our classroom. The first activity is silent reading. We read our books for 15 minutes and we have to be
silent. We do P.E twice a week. For P.E, we have to wear black shorts ,a white T-shirt and trainers.

My name is Ann and I realised that you can’t really know a
person well untill you live with them or at least travel with
them. last October, I went on holiday to Thailand for 2 weeks
with my cousin, Mia. The holiday began well. The weather was
great and we spent two perfect days in Bangkok. But things
went wrong when we left Bangkok. I wanted to stay in hostels,
which were basic but clean. But Mia said they weren't
comfortable. So, we stayed in an expensive hotel. I wanted to
experience the local culture, but Mia just wanted to go
shopping. It was awful. I thought I knew Mia very well but you don't know a person until you travel
with them. When we arrived home, we decided not to travel together again. I also had another awful
experience. Last spring, my best friend Sue and I booked a holiday in Venice. We rented a small
apartment for a week with a fantastic view of the city. At the last moment, another friend Linda asked
if she could come too. We felt sorry for her because she had problems with her family. So, we said yes.
Venice was magical and the weather was perfect, but the holiday was a disaster for one simple reason;
Linda was so mean. She has a good job;so she's not poor but she didn't want to pay for anything. She
was always complaining about money. She wanted to go to cheap restaurants and didn't want to visit
the museums or Galleries that cost money. The worst thing was that although Sue and I paid for the
appartment, Linda never invited us for a coffee or a drink.

Dear Amy,
Hello my dear friend. I hope you are doing great. I miss you a lot. I hope to see soon. So, after my hard
and busy school year my summer holidays began. First of all, I went to the summer camp. I spent my
time very well. We swam in the river and we sunsathed. In the evening, we sang songs. we performed
different plays. Besides, we took part in sports competitions with other camps. We had to go by boat to
the other side of the river. It was fun. In July, I went abroad, namely to France with my parents and my
little sister. We were touring by car around the country. So, we could see a lot of new places. I had a
good time in this country. In August, I stayed in the town reading books, listening to music, watching
TV, playing computer games, going out with my friends and preparing for school. So, I spent my holiday
very well and I had a good rest. That was the best holiday in my life.
What about you? What is your best holiday? Where did you go? What did you do? Write to me as soon

In 1992, the leaders of more than 100 countries met at the Earth
Summit, the United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro. They
discussed issues which affect the environment such as pollution and
climate change, and talked about possible solutions to these problems.
At this conference, they adopted a global strategy for sustainable
development. This means, economic and social development which
doesn't destroy the environment. One of the most important parts of
their strategy is now called local Agenda 21. The idea behind local
Agenda 21 (21 refers to the 21st century) is that if a lot of people do
small things locally then they can have a big impact nationally. For
example, if one person decides to take the bus to work rather than drive a car or always recalls their
rubbish, it only makes a very small difference. However, if millions of people across the world do the
same, the impact is huge. It's easy for every individual to do something small every day at home, at
school or at work. Local Agenda 21 encourages a collective responsibility towards the environment. For
it to be affective, everyone in a community needs to work together. Local councils need to provide
good facilities such as Recycling and public transport and people need to use them. If everyone plays
their part in a small way, they can both improve their local area and help to save the global
environment.

by climbing right out after six long days. She must have scared
her neighbor Mr. Qingwang who was the first to discover the
empty coffin.
(2) (2) Mrs Xiufeng lives alone in her home, in China's Quangxi

found her motionless one morning when he went to give her
breakfast. ‘’ No matter how hard I pushed her and called her

wrong, so I tried her breath and she has gone but her body was still warm.’’ So, believeing her to be
dead, Mr. Qingwang and his son made funeral preparations, placeing the old woman's body in a

friends pay the respects. Also, he chose not to nail the box shut until the day of burial.

(1) Have you heard about the city called Dubai? It is located in the desert on the Arabian Gulf. Dubai is
both a city and like a state in the United States. In Arabia, states are called emirates and emirates are
ruled by princes. The prince of Dubai is determined to make Dubai a location that attracts tourists
from all over the world. The prince is using the latest in modern technology to create spectacular
sights and experiences for visitors to Dubai to enjoy.
(2) Even though Dubai is in the desert, it has beautiful ocean beaches
because it is located on the Arabian Gulf. Since Dubai is a desert
country, the temperature there gets hotter than the warmest
locations in the United States. Of course, it never snows when the
weather is hot and Dubai is hot all year long, so there is no snow in
Dubai. Instead the prince decided to create an indoor skiing slope!
(3) Normal ski slopes are always built outdoors on the side of a snowy
mountain. Can you imagine walking into a huge building large
enough to contain a small mountain? Skiers ride a chairlift to get to the top of the indoor mountain
just like at an outdoor ski slope. There are no windows so skiers don’t see the hot desert sands
outdoors.
(4) Dubai doesn’t have just one but two indoor ski slopes. The first is called Ski Dubai and the second is
called Snowdome. More than just a place for indoor skiing, the Snowdome is part of a larger

Comprehension 14:
(1) Have you ever wondered why some people are successful in business and others are not? Here's a
story about one successful business person. He started out
washing dishes and today he owns 168 restaurants. Zubair Kazi
was born in Bhatkal, a small town in Southwest India. His dream
was to be an airplane pilot and when he was 16 years old he
learned to fly a small plane.
(2) At the age of 23 and with just a little money in his pocket, he
moved to the United States. He hoped to get a job in the
airplaine industry in California. Instead, he ended up in a
company that rented cars. While Mr Kazi was working at the
Car rental company ,he frequently ate in a nearby KFC
restaurant. To save money on food, he decided to get a job with KFC. For 2 months, he worked as a
Cook's assistant. His job was to clean the kitchen and help the cook. ‘’ I didn't like it” Mr Kazi says, ‘’
but I always did the best I could”.
(3) One day, Mr kazi's two co-workers failed to come to work. That day, Mr.Kazi did the work of all
three people in the kitchen. This really impressed the owners of the restaurant. A few months later,
the owners needed a manager for a new restaurant. They gave the job to Mr.Kazi. He worked hard
as a manager and soon the restaurant was making a profit.
(4) Few years later, Mr.Kazi heard about a restaurant that was losing money. The restaurant was dirty
inside and the food was terrible, greasy and undercooked. Mr.Kazi borrowed money from a bank
and bought the restaurant. For the first 6 months, Mr.Kazi worked in the restaurant from 8:00 a.m.
to 10:00 p.m. 7 days a week. He and his wife cleaned up the restaurant, remodeled the front of the
building and improved the cooking. They also tried hard to please the customers. If someone had
to wait more than 10 minutes for the food, Mr.Kazi gave them a free soda. Before long, the
restaurant was making a profit.
(5) A year later, Mr.Kazi sold his restaurant for a good profit. With the money he earned, he bought
three more restaurants that were losing money. Again, he cleaned them up, improved the food and
retrained the employees. Before long, these restaurants were making a profit too. Today, Mr.Kazi
owns 168 restaurants but he isn't planning to stop there. He's looking for more poorly managed
restaurants to buy. ‘’I love it when I go to buy a restaurant and find it's a mess’’ Mr Kazi says ‘’the
only way it can go up is up’’.

Comprehension 15.
(1) Social media has become an important tool for telling people about the crimes of Israel and the Gaza
Strip. Even though some websites like Facebook and Instagram have restricted and even closed some
accounts that support Palestine, social media still lets regular people
share what they see and hear. This helps the world know what's going
on.
(2) The Gaza Strip has been a place where Israel bombed and killed more
than 10,000 innocent civilians, 5,000 of them were children. News on
TV or newspapers can't always tell the whole story. However, social
media allows citizens to become journalists who share photos and
videos that mirror the suffering of Palestinians as it is. In addition,
people used social media to make a great difference by planning
protests to influence the authorities and the raising money to help the
victims.
(3) Social media is really important for Palestinians to tell their stories and
experiences. The impacts of social media is clear because Israeli
authorities asked Facebook to take down posts made by Young
Palestinians. As a result, many posts, pictures and videos were
removed. Some people think this is unfair because accounts that
promote racism and violence against Palestinians have not been
targeted in the same way. Social media is a crucial tool for Palestinians to connect with the world and
share. By being active on social media, sharing important posts, following relevant pages and raising
awareness we can change the way people think about Palestine and encourage them to support
more the Palestinian cause.

Comprehension 16.
(1) (1) Resources are things that we use. Natural resources come from Earth. Many of our natural
resources are limited. This means that they will not last forever. Some resources are renewable.
This means the resource can be replaced or grown. You can plant a new tree when you cut one
down. Other resources are not renewable. This means that they cannot be
replaced or grown. You can dig coal out of the ground. Once the coal is used,
it is gone.
(2) Many of Earth’s natural resources are limited, but people can help
conserve those resources. When you try to conserve a natural resource, you
use less of it, so it does not get used up so fast. One way that people conserve
fuel, like gasoline, is by riding a bicycle or walking. This works well when the
distance is short. We don’t have to drive everywhere.
(3)Water is a very important natural resource. We all need it to live. We can
conserve water by making sure that our pipes and faucets do not leak. We can also conserve water by
making smart choices. One choice is to use the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are
full. Another choice is to turn off the water when you brush your teeth. We can all make a difference.

Comprehension 17.
(1) The term ecology comes from a Greek word that means “the study of the house.” Ecology is the
study of how all living things interact with their environments. In a way, Earth is the house of all
living things. We all live together on this planet and it is our home. Today, we also understand
ecology to mean taking care of the Earth so that humans, plants and animals can all thrive.
However, we can damage the environment. Sometimes the damage is irreversible.
(2) Ecology is a huge area of study. It covers every part of a living creature’s ecosystem that affects its
ability to live. Ecology considers how a living thing reacts to climate and soil conditions. It also
studies how much clean water is available and and the amount natural resources. By learning about
how living things, including humans, affect each other, we can make smart decisions that protect all
living things and the resources they need.
(3) There are many things that children can do to help make sure that their world stays healthy. The
decisions you are making today can affect the future. Conservation is one area of ecology where we
can all make a difference. It does not matter how old we are or where we live. Conservation means
using Earth’s limited resources wisely so that they don’t run out. When you are home, take a
moment to think about how you use resources. Many people waste resources. Leaking toilets, half-
filled dishwashers or clothes washers, and unattended hoses all waste precious water. If you leave
lights on and appliances running in rooms where they are not being used, you are wasting energy.
(4) There’s another way we can help conserve Earth’s resources. We can show our support of
businesses that make their products using methods and materials that do not damage Earth. By
buying their products, we are telling them that we appreciate their efforts to be Earth-friendly.
(5) We need to take the time to learn about how to save resources. More importantly, we must then
put into practice what we learn. Children can do their part. They can show their families some ways
to save resources. Together, we can all make a difference.

Comprehension 26 (2020 national exam)
Peter is an American tourist who visited Morocco with four of his friends. This is the story of their trip:
[3] After the meal, our hosts said that we should not check in to the hotel and they insisted on us sleeping
at their home, even after we refused multiple times. Finally, we accepted their kind offer, the five of us
staying the night sleeping in the main room of the house. This same scenario was repeated several times
all over Morocco, in big cities like Marrakech and Fes as well as in smaller towns. We were always treated
with great kindness and hospitality as our hosts offered us food and housing. Those offerings were
usually so insistent that we gave in and were humbled to watch Moroccan families treat us like kings.
[4] While visiting Morocco as a tourist, I was looking for a change in my personal life, a new adventure.
Following my first visit in 1999, I packed my bags and returned to Morocco, thinking I would just study
Arabic for a while. I finally stayed for seven years, first working at a language school and later setting up
and running my own business, working with foreigners who were doing business in Morocco.

(2) The immediate consequences of earthquakes can be quite severe. The shaking of the ground can
damage buildings, bridges, and other structures. Sadly, this can lead to injuries and even loss of life.
In places where many people live close together, like cities, the impact can be especially challenging.
(3) Earthquakes don't just stop with the shaking. They can trigger other disasters like landslides and
tsunamis. Landslides occur when the shaking dislodges rocks and debris on hillsides, potentially
burying communities. In coastal areas, undersea earthquakes can create tsunamis, huge waves that
can flood coastlines and cause widespread damage.
(4) The consequences of earthquakes go beyond the immediate destruction. They can disrupt essential
services like water supply, transportation, and communication. Rebuilding after an earthquake takes
time and resources. It's not just about fixing buildings but also helping people cope with the trauma
and loss. The impact of earthquakes is felt long after the ground stops shaking.
