CONNECTORS OF CAUSE, RESULT AND PURPOSE

 CONNECTORS OF CAUSE
Because of = a causa de due to= debido a as a result of = como resultado de
Estos conectores van seguidos de un sustantivo.

Since = ya que, puesto que as = ya que, puesto que because = porque


Estos conectores van seguidos de una oración con sujeto y verbo

I couldn't go fishing last Saturday because I had to work.


I got home late due to a flight delay.

EXAMPLES OF REPHRASING
I can’t join this fitness club. The membership is too expensive
I can’t join this fitness club since/ as/ because the membership is too expensive

You’ll soon feel drowsy. It’s a side effect of the medication


You’ll soon feel drowsy as a result of /because of/ due to the medication

 CONNECTORS OF RESULT
So = por lo tanto therefore = por lo tanto consequently = como consecuencia
for this reason = por esta razón as a result = como resultado

Detrás de ellos ponemos una coma y después una oración son sujeto y verbo.

EXAMPLES OF REPHRASING
He wasn’t wearing a helmet. His injuries are life-threatening
He wasn’t wearing a helmet. As a result/ for this reason/ Consequently/…, his injuries are life-
threatening

 RESULT CLAUSES

Estas subordinadas se denominan SUBORDINADAS CONSECUTIVAS en las sintaxis


española. Se utilizan para expresar el resultado o consecuencia de algo.
Los nexos de estas subordinadas son:

o SO...........THAT
o SUCH........THAT

- So + Adjetivo + oración con that

EX: Hoy hace tanto frío que tuve que pedir prestado un abrigo> It’s so cold
today that I had to borrow a coat

- So + Adverbio + oración con that


EX: A veces las temperaturas bajan tan rápido que se me congela el aliento>
Sometimes the temperature falls so quickly that my breath freezes

- Such + a(n) + adjetivo + nombre singular + oración con that

EX: Es un país tan bonito que me gustaría quedarme> It’s such a beautiful
country that I’d like to stay.

- Such + adjetivo + nombre incontable + oración con that

EX: Hace tan mal tiempo que es demasiado peligroso salir a la calle> It’s
such bad weather that it’s too dangerous to go out.

EXAMPLES OF REPHRASING

His teeth were so white that they shone in the dark


He had such white teeth that they shone in the dark

It was such a hot day that Sue spent all the afternoon at the beach

The day was so hot that Sue spent all the afternoon at the beach

 CONNECTORS OF PURPOSE

To = in order (not) to = so as (not) to + infinitive (para….)


So that + sentence (with subject and verb) (para que…)
Cuando ponemos so that, detrás utilizamos can o could o will o would (Los sujetos de ambas frases
deben ser diferentes)
So that + can/ will
So that + could/ would

To no puede ir en negativa.
He plays the guitar to free his emotions.
He plays the guitar in order to free his emotions.
He plays the guitar so as to free his emotions.

Her mother will give her some money so that she can go to the concert.

EXAMPLES OF REPHRASING
The President took four bodyguards. They protected him.
The President took four bodyguards to/ in order to/so as to protect him

They helped him. That way he could finish on time.


They helped him so that he could finish on time
