LESSON #12: Moment of Inertia

In this lesson you will be able
 Develop a method for determining the moment of inertia for an area.
 Introduce the product of inertia and show how to determine the maximum and minimum
moments of inertia of an area.
 Discuss the mass moment of inertia.
All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

Moment of Inertia

 also called the second moment of area, is the product of area and the square of its moment
arm about a reference axis.

 rectangular moments of inertia of the area A,

Example#1: Example #2: (p.9.42, Vector Mechanics for

Engineers-Statics, 9th ed.)
Determine the moment of inertia of the given
figure with respect to a parallel axis AA’ and DD’ Determine the moments of inertia Ix and Iy of the
area shown with respect to centroidal axes
respectively parallel and perpendicular to side AB.
