MUKBANG: GREAT OR GROSS?

7 Speaking practice: debate

You are going to make an argument for and against mukbang videos. Then in pairs or small groups, you
split into two sides, A and B. Both sides are going to have a meeting to discuss a potential mukbang
video ban. You have to argue your case.

Your teacher will decide the ‘winner’ of the debate.

Student/s A

You are a mukbanger (or mukbanger production team). You make your living off mukbang
videos. It is really important to you that mukbang is not banned. It will ruin your life.

Student/s B

You are a government official/s. You are part of a task force that wants to introduce a ban
on mukbang videos. You strongly believe that mukbang videos are especially damaging for
teenagers and it is really important to ban them as soon as possible.

8 Optional extension/homework

Task A: Write a short essay of around 250 words using your notes from the debate. Describe the two
sides of the debate regarding mukbang videos. Use this basic format: introduction, pros, cons, and
conclusion.

Task B: Create your own short version of a mukbang and/or ASMR video to present to the class. You
can perform it in class or film the video (inside or outside of class time) and show the class next time.

Task C: You are a YouTube producer. Design a mukbang video. Make a list of the following details.

• What kind of person do you want in the video

• What do you want them to eat and what sounds do you want them to make
• What do you want them to focus on or talk about
• Any other details you want to add
