Antonio de Morga was a Spanish lawyer, government official, and historian who is also known
asscene Antonio de Morga Sánchez Garay. He was born in Seville, Spain, around 1559, and
passed away in Madrid in 1636. The writing "Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas" (Events in the
Philippine Islands), by Morga, is best known for providing a historical account of the early
Spanish colonization of the Philippines. Morga was a lawyer and became a judge in several
spanish colonies and was also appointed lieutenant governor of the Philippines in 1593. Sucesos
de las Islas, which is regarded as one of the most important books on the early history of the
Spanish colonization of the Philippines, was also written by him in 1609.
What was the book ( Successos de las islas Filipinas) all about?
The Spanish colonization of the Philippines is one of many subjects covered in the book. It starts
with Ferdinand Magellan's arrival in 1521 and continues with Spanish expeditions and conquests
which followed. The establishment of Spanish settlements, interactions with native people, the
spread of Christianity, and the judicial and administrative frameworks put in place by the Spanish
colonial authorities are all covered in Morga's account.
Details about the social, cultural, and economic facets of Philippine society at that time are
included in Morga's account. He offers insights into local people's customs, traditions, and
governance structures as well as the effects of Spanish colonization. The book also discusses
topics like trade, agriculture, and the Philippines' natural resources.
"Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas" serves as a legal and administrative reference in addition to its
historical content. The governance structure, legal system, and laws that the Spanish government
has enacted throughout the archipelago are all covered by Morga.
The rationale was to document and record the history of the Spanish presence in the
Philippines, particularly during the time when Spanish conquistadors and missionaries
established colonial rule, the book "Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas" was written. Morga set
out to give an impartial and thorough account of the events, which included the early
expeditions, Spanish settlements, interactions with the native peoples, and
Christianization. As a legal and administrative reference, it advances Spanish interests
and preserves the cultural heritage of the archipelago. It also gives a reliable historical
account of Spanish colonization of the Philippines.
Rizal annotated Morga's book to reveal the pre-colonial history of the Philippines, refute
Spanish colonial narratives, solidify Filipino nationalism, and advance reform and
progress. His annotations aimed to rectify colonial propaganda, give a clearer account of
Filipino history, and instill a sense of pride and identity in his fellow Countrymen.
