INTRODUCTION BACKGROUNG
One of the greatest social crimes committed in our Institution of learning today is
cultism. It is now a common phenomenon in the entire society. Cult activities are most
often laden with blood shed. During initiation and rival group clashes everywhere,
blood flows and lives lost in the process (traditional) ogboni (Yoruba) Ozor title and
Masquarade.
Oxford Advanced learners Dictionary Defines cult as a group who have extreme
religious belief. It also refers to a group whose beliefs and practices are considered
abnormal and an ideological organization held together by charismatic relationships.
An opposition movement defines cult as a group that tends to manipulate, exploit and
control its members.
In Latin, it is cultus meaning worship.
Cultism then is a practice performed by a group of individual who engage in secret
activities for protection of members and for other motives. There activities are guided
by rituals.
It is also a practice of small group of people which deviates from the norms and
expected patterns of behavior of a particular society.
Specific factors in cult behavior are said to include
1. Authoritarian mind control over members
2. Manipulative
3. Aggressive proselytizing i.e persuade someone in an offensive manner to join a
sect
4. Communal and totalistic organization
5. Systematic programs of indoctrination
6. Perpetuation in middle class communities
Reasons why students join: Originally students had very good intention of joining
cult. The idea was patristic and altruistic. People especially the bright and intelligent
ones including the politically conscious joined because they want to fight tribalism,
revive chivalry i.e. men’s behavior towards women, and convention.
They joined not to harm, maim or kill but to serve as a pressure group to dismantle
undue status quo. But today with the explosion of cult groups students join with
obnoxious, deadly and diabolical reason including the following
1. Peer pressure
2. Parental involvement
3. Sense of security
4. Academic success
5. Criminal tendencies
6. To influence opposite sex
7. Financial assistance
8. Search for security
Why Girls join
1. To be prominent in social activities
2. False feeling of fulfilment
3. To form a clique that can harass lectures sexually
4. To deal with anyone who steps on their toes
