One of the greatest social crimes committed in our Institution of learning today is
cultism. It is now a common phenomenon in the entire society. Cult activities are most
often laden with blood shed. During initiation and rival group clashes everywhere,
blood flows and lives lost in the process (traditional) ogboni (Yoruba) Ozor title and

Oxford Advanced learners Dictionary Defines cult as a group who have extreme
religious belief. It also refers to a group whose beliefs and practices are considered
abnormal and an ideological organization held together by charismatic relationships.

control its members.
In Latin, it is cultus meaning worship.

sect
4. Communal and totalistic organization
5. Systematic programs of indoctrination
6. Perpetuation in middle class communities
Reasons why students join: Originally students had very good intention of joining
cult. The idea was patristic and altruistic. People especially the bright and intelligent
ones including the politically conscious joined because they want to fight tribalism,
revive chivalry i.e. men’s behavior towards women, and convention.
