SOUTH: Highlanders seek redemption at 2011 Big South Conference Tournament

From page 7
South newcomer Campbell University over the Highs on Oct. 29, came as a surprise given RUs dominance of the Big South just a month prior. Still, this is the second consecutive year the Highs will share the regular season title as cochampions. Last year, RU ended the season in a convoluted five-way tie for the regular season title. This year, the Highs share the title with just Winthrop. This is a hard working team. Weve been working for two years now; in the weight room, in the offseason, and in preseason when it was a hundred degrees, Head Coach Ben Sohrabi said. The first thing we did was build our defense up, and our defense showed up this season. Through seven Big South contests, RU outscored their opponents by a margin of 8-1 and recorded six consecutive shutouts, a feat never before accomplished in the 28-year history of the Big South conference. The team also boasted a pair of goalkeepers in sophomore Che Brown and senior Lisa Lubke who are universally acclaimed as the two best goalies in the conference. For a large margin of the season, Brown was ranked third in the entire nation in terms of save percentage and goals allowed per game. Through the record setting and the dominating performances, however, Coach Sohrabis ladies remain focused on a single goal this late in the season: a Big South Tournament championship. A championship is what weve been working toward all year, Sohrabi said. We wanted to get the No. 1 seed in the tournament, and weve done that. We had three goals coming into the season. We wanted to have a good regular season record, we wanted to get the regular season championship, and we wanted to win the tournament. Weve done two out of the three, and now its time to top off the list. The Highs ended the regular season with a 13-5 record, and owned an impressive scoring margin of 34-14, outshot opponents by a margin of 259-171, and owned a solid advantage in corner kicks with a cumulative total of 93 kicks to their opponents 74. Several notable seniors that will play their last games as a High in the tournament are senior midfielder Maryellen Derenda and Lubke. Derenda earned a reputation as an Ironwoman player, as she never missed a game throughout her four years with the team. Derenda appeared in all 80 matches the Highs played during her four years, and started 43 of them. Lubke earned a fierce reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Big South during her first two years with the team, but then began splitting time between the posts with Brown, who is now the heir apparent to Lubkes long-held title as the best female goalie to ever play in the Big South. We kind of like to show these younger kids what it takes to win a championship, said Lubke, who was a part of the 2008 team that won the Big South tournament. Its definitely a passing of the torch moment with me and Che [Brown]. Its definitely fun to know that shes going to come up and do huge things for this program now and in the future. The scary reality about RU Womens Soccer, though, is their potential to be just as good as they have been recently for many years to come. The team will graduate just three seniors this year, and only one next year. Rising stars like Brown, sophomore midfielder Rachel Canada Conway, freshman midfielder Stephanie Herb, sophomore forward Sahar Aflaki, and sophomore defender Sydney Golden provide many reasons to look forward to what seems to be an exceptionally bright future in Radford Womens Soccer. Sohrabi seems to be just the man to guide the program, too, as the 18-year coaching veteran (16 of them at RU) is constantly heralded as the most successful soccer coach in the history of the Big South conference. Sohrabi ranks first in Big South history in wins (159), conference wins (60), winning percentage, and tournament wins. This years regular season championship seems to be only further confirmation that the 18-year coaching veteran still hasnt lost his touch for recruiting the very best, and making winners out of them. The coolest thing is that Ive seen the work that everyone has put in, and how its paid off is really encouraging, said senior forward Jourdan McDaniel. Just to be a part of this program this year has been something really special. I think the future will be interesting if everyone on the team keeps on working as hard as they are right now. The 2011 Big South Tournament kicks off on Nov. 3, when the Highlanders face off against No. 8 seeded UNC Asheville at 2 p.m.

It was a quick start but a tough end for Radford Field Hockey, who played Davidson University on Oct. 29 in North Carolina. With an attendance of 224 Wildcat fans, Davidson got the win after scoring two goals in the first half, and holding tight defense to pull it out 2-1. The Highlanders entered the game with a season record of 7-10, while Davidson entered with a record of 9-7. The first half of the game was where most of the action took place. Only three minutes into the game, with an assist by senior midfielder Marlee Schramm, senior forward Melissa Register scored the first goal of the game and for the Highlanders, which became Registers eighth goal of the season. Fourteen minutes later, Davidson tied the game at one goal apiece. Wildcats forward Finley Amato was awarded the assist on midfielder Annie Evans seventh goal of the season. When it looked as if the first half was coming to a close, Davidson scored again in the 33rd minute, to give the Wildcats a lead 2-1. Amato made another assist to help give forward Christine Rua her ninth goal of the season. The score reflected the lack of shots Radford had in the first half. The Highlanders only had one shot at goal, while Davidson had 10. The second half of the game proved to be uneventful. It was full of hard-fought defense and goal shots, but neither team was able to make a dent in the score. Twenty minutes into the second half, Radfords senior back Ellie Staples had a chance to score, but her shot was blocked by Davidsons goalkeeper, Sarah Fisher. Fisher went on to make two more saves in the half. The shots were made by Register and senior back Lynsey Daughtrey. With tight defense and tough goalkeeping, neither team could get a goal. Overall, Davidson outshot the Highlanders 13-7, and had more saves than the Highs at a close margin of 3-2. Davidson improved to 10-7 on the season, while Radford ended the season at a record of 7-11. The Highlanders finished off with a record of 2-4 in the NorPac conference. Register finished first on the team in goals scored with eight, while senior midfielder Courtney Poole finished with six. Senior forward Madonna Wadolowski finished with a team-leading five assists. As for cumulative team statistics, the Highs gave up a total of 46 goals on the season, while scoring 32. RU outshot their opponents on the season by a margin of 270-241, and also outpaced their opponents in shots on goal 167-160. In terms of penalty corners, RU dominated the competition by a margin of 175-115. The Highlanders are finished with NorPac regular season play for the 2011 year, and will travel to California for the NorPac Tournament. The Highs will play against University of California at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 3.

now 13-5 overall and 8-2 in the Big South conference. Big South conference newcomer Campbell improved to 13-4-2 on the year and 7-1-2 in the conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Che Brown allowed two goals and totaled five saves in the match. Radford totaled eight shots in the game and after a slow start Campbell managed to fire 15 shots at the net in the contest. The Camels also led in corner kicks with seven, with the Highlanders only having two throughout the game. With the loss, RU now shares half of the Big South title with the Winthrop University Eagles, the No.2 seed in the Big South tournament. The Highs will start tournament play as the top seed on Nov. 3 against the No. 8 seed, UNC Asheville in a contest scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Lets say the game is tied, two sets apiece. Whats your state of mind heading into that fifth set? Whats the gameplan?
Courtesy of RU Athletics

My state of mind is to stay confident in myself and my team and believe that we will win the fifth game. I also believe in my mind that we will be the first team to get to eight points. Are you ever nervous at the start of a game?

Sometimes I get nervous right before they name the starters. Although, as soon as I get on the court the nerves go away.

What do you, personally, plan on achieving as a player by the end of the season?
I plan to achieve more confidence in myself and the abilities I have, in being a team player and a leader, later in life when I work in the corporate world. I have learned alot being an athlete here, and I have grown alot playing a sport in college.
