What Will One Do With That- A Thai moral short story originally made by Vilas
Manwat and English translated by Jean Dee. A story about a man and a youth who is being
perceived by the idea of being bad.

A. INTRODUCTION

MOTIVATION

Before we start our lesson, I want you to

bring out your notebook and books and
we will have a short activity.

I will show you some pictures and you

need to reflect on it. I will call some
students to answer the questions. To
those who will volunteer to answer, will
get a reward. In every recitation, there is
a reward to be given to the specific
student that will recite.

Okay so let’s proceed to the recitation.

1. Are these situations also present in

2. What are your barangay officials

rather we talk to them politely and ask

So our lesson for today is about a short

story by a Thai Author named Vilas
Manwat.

The title of the story is What Will One
Do With That. The story was from
Thailand wrote by Vilas Manwat.

What is about Thailand?

Thailand is ruled by several kingdoms.
The country adopted an ositionist policy
and cut contract from Europe until the
early 18th century.
The rural areas were in poverty until

about the 80’s.

For the past 30 years, Thailnd have
shown more development and
expansion.
Buddhism was established in the 5 th
century and was primarily the Theravada
school.

The Story’s Reflection on Thailand

- Buddhism is very obvious in the story.
Nai Phan choosing contentment ties into
the Theravada teaching that craving is
the cause of suffering.
- The gunman is a good representation
of the desperation due to the poverty in
the rural areas of Thailand.
- Peace over ambition is a huge part of
the story and it is also one of the mai
points of Buddhism especially the
Theravada branch.

you can use this ideas in the activity
later on.

So class, before we proceed to our

lesson I want you first to unlock the
vocabulary meanings here in front.

You will encounter this words in the

short story and this will be your guide.

First, I will group you into 5 and you are

given 10 minutes to read and understand
the short story on pages 225-228. I will
ask questions later in which for those
who will answer, will get a reward.

For Group 1, you identify the author.

For Group 2, you identify the characters.
For Group 3, you identify the setting.
For Group 4, you identify the theme.
For Group 5, you identify the resolution.

After 10 minutes, the discussion about

the short story What Will One Do With Students will read their books
That will begin.

We start about the author.

What is the name of the author?

Correct! The author’s name is Vilas

Manwat. Ma’am, Vilas Manwat.

- 85 works in 198 publications
- known for her wide range of
knowledge about the traits of a person.
- known for her literary pieces like
novels and short stories.

Now we proceed to the elements of the

story.

Who are the Characters in the story?

Ma’am. Nai Phan, wife, drunkard,
Very Good. gunman and the customers of Nai Phan

As said in the story, Nai Phan is also

known for his Fried rice, generosity and
kindness.
Next character is the gunman.

At first, he was brave to put a gun into

Nai Phan but afterwards, when Nai Phan
started to talk and converse with him he
didn’t continue to kill him rather, Nai
Phan let him stay in the cafe shop and
have a longer time to get to know each
other.

For the setting of the story.

Where did the story took place or
happened?
Ma’am, in Nai Phan’s cafe in Thailand.

Next one is the plot. A plot is he

sequence of events told in a story, plot is
also known as narrative structure. There
are usually considered to be five
elements in a plot line: exposition or
background information, rising action
(that which complicates the story),
climax or crisis, falling action, and
resolution. The plot describes the
structure of a story. It shows
arrangement of events and actions
within a story.

Here is a diagram for you to be guided.

PLOT:
Nai Phan owns a cafe and despite not
being wealthy, he is pleased with his
life. A man with a gun comes to his cafe
and threatens to rob Nai Phan but after

he conversed with the gunman, the

gunman was convinced that it’s possible
to be a good person while still feeling
successful. The gunman then leaves with
a new outlook on his values and way of
life.

The exposition is at the first part of the

story in which provides the reader with
background information introducing the
setting, characters, and main conflicts.
The exposition usually occurs at the
beginning of a novel or story and may
be short or long. the start of the story,
the situation before the action starts. It
provides background information about
characters and circumstances or explains
relationships.

The Rising action is when round

characters are developed, the conflicts
are increased. Rising action includes the
series of events (usually the conflicts or
struggles of the protagonist).

Next is the Climax. The point of greatest

tension in a work of literature and the
turning point in the action or plot; it is
the most intense moment.

Next is the Falling Action.

The part of the plot which follows the
climax and diminishes tension before the
resolution.
