Size: Stitches - Abbreviations Key


 Finished size - about 6 inches tall  Rnd - round
and about 2.5 inches wide  MR - magic ring
 st(s) - stitch(es)
Skill Level:
 sl st - slip stitch
 Beginner / Intermediate
 sc - single crochet
Materials:  hdc - half double crochet
 Worsted weight (4ply) yarn in  dc - double crochet
your choice of colors (I used 3)  tc - triple crochet
 Crochet hook - Size E (3.5 mm)  ch - chain stitch
 9 mm Black safety eyes (2)  inc - increase (sc 2 into 1 st)
 Polyfil or stuffing of your choice  dec - decrease (join 2 sc into 1 st)
 Yarn, darning, or tapestry needle  BLO – back loops only
 [#] - number of st in round
Notes:
 The seahorses shown are about 6 inches tall, yours will vary according to the
hook, the yarn you use, and your tension. Keep your stitches tight and consistent
to create an even fabric with no holes for stuffing to show through.
 Crochet in spiral or joined rounds, use the method you prefer best, it won’t affect
the final look. I personally prefer joined rounds, while others use spiral rounds.

HEAD
Rnd 1: In a MR - sc 6 [6] Rnd 11-16: Sc in each st (6 rnds) [42]
Rnd 2: Inc in each st [12] Rnd 17: (Sc 3 then dec) x 8, sc in last 2 sts [34]
Rnd 3: (Sc 1 then inc) x 6 [18] Place two 9mm eyes between Rnds 10 & 11,
Rnd 4: (Sc 2 then inc) x 6 [24] 15 holes apart. Start stuffing head.
Rnd 5: Sc in each st [24] Rnd 18: (Sc 2 then dec) x 8 sc in last st [26]
Rnd 6: (Sc 3 then inc) x 6 [30] Rnd 19: (Sc 1 then dec) x 8 sc in last st [18]

Rnd 6-8: sc in each st [8] Rnd 19: Sc 3, (inc then sc) x 8, sc 2 [29]

Tie off and leave a long tail for sewing the body to the head. Lightly stuff the tail
before sewing. Start at the tip. Pull yarn tight as you create the curl to make sure it
doesn’t uncurl. When tail is finished, stuff the body and sew onto head.

FINS “Ears” - Make 2 NOSE


Rnd 1: In a MR – ch 2, dc, ch2, sl st. Rnd 1: In a MR - hdc 7 [7]
Pull ring closed, leave a tail for sewing. Rnd 2: BLO: sc in each st [7]
Position on Rnd 8 and sew on head. Rnd 3-4: sc in each st [7]
Lightly stuff. Position onto head between,
FINS “Arms” - Make 2 the eyes but about 2 to 3 rows below
Rnd 1: In a MR – ch 1, dc 2, tc, dc 2, ch 2, and sew in place. Shape it so the tip turns
sl st. Pull ring closed, leave a tail for sewing. slightly up.
Position on Rnds 22 & 23 of body and sew
into place.

BACK FIN
Row 1: Ch 4. In 2st st from hook: dc 2, dc in next st, dc in last st, ch 2 and sl st in to
the same last st. Leave a tail and sew onto the middle of back.

Position the ear, arm, and back fins onto body as shown and sew them on.
With white yarn, sew stripes onto it’s belly.

Head Spikes
Row 1: Chain 21. In 2nd st from hook: hdc 3 times, skip 1 st and sl st in next st.
*Skip 1 st, hdc 4 times in next st, skip 1 st, sl st into next st.* Repeat from * 4 more
times. You should have a total of 5 spikes.
Tie off and leave a long tail for sewing spikes to head. Position on head and pin in
place. Start sewing the spikes on, going over in the valleys, pull yarn tight, and go
through the spikes to close the holes. When finished, hide yarn inside the head.
