Aim:

To study the simulation of half wave-controlled rectifier with R load using MATLAB
- Simulink.

Hardware: PC with windows 10 or higher.

Software: MATLAB – Simulink.

Theory:

Introduction to Simulink:

Simulink® is a block diagram environment for multidomain simulation and Model-

Based Design. It supports system-level design, simulation, automatic code generation,
and continuous test and verification of embedded systems. Simulink provides a
graphical editor, customizable block libraries, and solvers for modeling and simulating
dynamic systems. It is integrated with MATLAB®, enabling you to incorporate
MATLAB algorithms into models and export simulation results to MATLAB for
further analysis.

Single-phase half wave-controlled rectifier:

A single-phase half wave-controlled converter only has one SCR is employed in the
circuit. The performance of the controlled rectifier very much depends upon the type
and parameters of the output (load) circuit. The simulation circuit of the half wave
converter is shown in fig.10 (a) during the positive half-cycle of input voltage, the
thyristor anode voltage is positive with respect to cathode and the thyristor is said to
be forward biased. When thyristor T1 is fired at ωt=α, thyristor T1 is conducts and
input voltage appears the load. When the input voltage starts to be negative at ωt=π,
the thyristor anode is negative with respect to cathode and thyristor is said to be
reverse biased; and it is turned off. The time after the input voltage starts to go positive
until the thyristor is fired is called the delay or firing angle α. The simulation

waveforms of input voltage, output voltage and load current are shown in fig. This
converter is not used in industrial applications because its output has high ripple
content and low ripple frequency.

2. Click on the blank model.
3. Click on the library icon on the simulation tab of Simulink.
4. Place all required components/block from library into workspace.
5. Connect all the components according to circuit diagram in fig.10 (a).
6. Set frequency of voltage source to 50Hz by double clicking on the block.
7. Set period of pulse generator to 0.02sec and phase delay to 0.0025sec.
8. Set stop time to 0.04sec and run the simulation.
9. Double click on the scope window and observe the output waveforms.
