Problem Statement:

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant health problem in Pakistan due to various factors such
as poverty, overcrowding, malnutrition, limited access to healthcare, and inadequate
infrastructure for TB control and treatment. According to a report by WHO Pakistan is
ranked as the 5th highest TB burden country and annually contributes to nearly 5.8% of
new cases of TB worldwide . TB mortality in Pakistan is estimated to be around 15-20
deaths per 100,000 population. There are gaps in TB diagnosis and treatment
coverage, particularly in rural and remote areas. Pakistan also faces challenges with
drug-resistant TB , with 2688 laboratory confirmed cases of multi-drug-resistant TB
(MDR-TB) and 839 patients identified with extensively drug-resistant TB ( XDR-TB),
many risk factors such as incorrect or inappropriate antibiotic intake and person-to-
person transmission play a major role in the emergence of MDR-TB .It is empirical to
address the lack of awareness, stigma, and insufficient funding for TB prevention and
control programs which contribute to the persistence of the disease in the country. To
combat this problem we require a robust and effective strategic plan to improve access
to diagnostics, expanding treatment coverage , addressing social determinants of health
, and strengthening healthcare systems.

Focus areas:
Healthcare systems and workers- educating about symptoms and promoting preventive
measures
Higher risk groups-HIV/AIDS and other immune compromised patients
