Questions 30–34

Read the text and questions below.

For each question, circle the correct letter A, B or C.

Helping Sea Turtles

11-year-old Gabriela talks about how she helps sea turtles in Costa Rica.

Last year, I went on holiday with my family to Costa Rica. The sea was beautiful and
there was plenty to do, but one part of the beach was closed. At the hotel they told
me this was to protect sea turtles. I didn’t know much about them – so I wanted to
know more.

I learnt that mother turtles leave their eggs in the sand, that was really interesting!
The cool part was watching the baby turtles hatching, which is when they come out of
their eggs. More than anything I liked seeing them walking for the first time.

Unfortunately, only a few baby turtles become adults. There are lots of fish and birds
who hunt them for food. The biggest problem are seagulls – big birds that eat small
sea animals. That’s why people need to protect them.

The baby turtles need to go into the sea at night, when it’s quiet and there aren’t
many tourists. So I helped move the babies one dark evening. But it made me sad
because I was leaving the following day and couldn’t do it again.

Then, I found out that I could choose one turtle to help during its life, so I chose one
and gave her a name: Shelly. I got an awesome certificate with her picture. Every
year, my family sends money to help Shelly, and we get a new picture. I’ve just
received one and I couldn’t believe how big she’s got. I wonder what she’ll look like
next year!
