PROBLEM 1 (10pts)

A rigid tank contains 20 lb. of air at 20 psia and 70°F. More air is added to the tank until the
pressure and temperature rise to 35 psia and 90°F, respectively. Determine the amount of air added
to the tank.

PROBLEM 2 (10pts)

The cylindrical container is filled with water at a

temperature of 25°C and a depth of 2.5 m. If the
container has a mass of 30 kg, determine the
combined weight of the container and the water.
Density of water at 25°C is 997.1kg/m3

PROBLEM 3 (10pts)

The 8-m-diameter spherical balloon is filled with helium that is at a temperature of 28°C and a
pressure of 106 kPa. Determine the weight of the helium contained in the balloon.

PROBLEM 4 (10pts)

A cylinder of 0.30 m diameter rotates concentrically inside a fixed cylinder of 0.31 m diameter.
Both the cylinders are 0.3 m long. Determine the viscosity of the liquid which fills the space
between the cylinders if a torque of 0.98 N.m is required to maintain an angular velocity of 2π rad/s
2πN
(or 60 r.p.m., since angular velocity ω = 60
where N is speed of rotation in r.p.m.).

PROBLEM 5 (20pts)

A 50-cm x 30-cm x 20-cm block weighing 150 N is to be

moved at a constant velocity of 0.8 m/s on an inclined
surface with a friction coefficient of 0.27. (a) Determine
the force F that needs to be applied in the horizontal
direction. (b) If a 0.4-mm-thick oil film with a dynamic
viscosity of 0.012 Pa. s is applied between the block and
inclined surface, determine the percent reduction in the
required force.

PROBLEM 6 (10pts)

Determine the minimum size of glass tubing in centimeter that can be used to measure water
level, if the capillary rise in the tube is not to exceed 0.25 cm. Take surface tension of water in
contact with air as 0.0075 kg/m.

PROBLEM 7 (10pts)

What should be the diameter of a droplet of water in millimeter, if the pressure inside is to be
176.58 Pa greater than the outside? Given the value of surface tension of water in contact with air
at 20°C as 0.0075 kg/m.

PROBLEM 8 (20pts)

At a depth of 2 kilometers in the ocean the pressure is 82.404 MPa. Assume the specific weight at
surface as 10.05 kN.m3 and that the average bulk modulus of elasticity is 2.35 GPa for that
pressure range. (a) What will be the change in specific volume between that at the surface and at
that depth? (b) What will be the specific weight at that depth?
