Reasons for Selecting This Reading Information system development and implementation is the trend generally adopted by many

business organizations in order to embrace the technology of the day. In the market today every organization seeks to automate their business processes. Business Information Systems (BIS) is a field that has a wide scope of utilities and in today's organizational environment. Business Information Systems are playing a significant role in enabling the organizations meet their missions and objectives and achieving the laid down corporation goals. The systems range from solving security problems, business process problems, human resource management problems, financial streamlining problems and many other departmental processes that can efficiently be automated to the advantage of the organization (University of Sydney, 2010). Before the decision to adopt a given information system it is very important to have an assessment of the organizational needs and deficiencies in the different areas of business operation processes. This is for example in the financial department, before the automation of the financial department with an electronic system of payment and financial analysis the organizations heads and managers must first understand the processes in this department and where there is a problem of lack of efficiency in delivering(University of Sydney, 2010). This will help the organizations managers to be able to choose the appropriate system for this department. The professionals will understand the information system needs of the organization thus in their design and development, they will take into account the need and come up with a system that is very efficient and successful in meeting the organizational requirements of the organization. This is according to Kings and Marples (1998) as cited by Weston &Rodgers, (1998). In training of future students, it is vital to develop awareness of the industry challenges. This is important in the context that these future students will graduate into the practical field and they may be able to have an impact positively in the systems development industry and ensure organizations get systems that solve their organizational processes problems. Main Ideas Compared with Class Ideas The current trend in the business information systems development identified to be experiencing a lot of a setback in the development of information systems. The factors that influence the level of success of systems have become more conspicuous and they are directly dependant on the practices and commitments involved in the different levels of adoption procedures. In our studies from class material, different literature and scholarly materials we learn that, the problems facing the different organizations is the fate of information systems developed for them that are not effective or they do not deliver according to their system requirements and needs. This concurs with the many sentiments from the industry (King & Marples, 1998). The high demand for these information systems by many organizations has resulted to the information systems professionals to be so much in a hurry to deliver. The designing and development of the information systems needs keen and critical analysis of the changes in organizational structure and processes. According to studies and research major problems are rooted in the conception of the ideas and design of the information system. The basis of

conception often differs from the true realities of the system needs and requirements of the organization. Examples of the processes involved in the development of an information system are the problem analysis, design, coding and testing and the implementation and adoption process (Salazar & David, 1999). On the part of the management and users it needs total commitment and integration with the process so as to achieve a high level of understanding in the development adoption and implementation procedure to make the whole process successful. These are the major areas that ultimately affect the development adoption and implementation of a new system and they directly determine the success or failure of the system. If the different stakeholders are not actively participating in the different levels of the process then it is more likely that system may not be successful (Salazar & David, 1999). The results of thorough research have it that systems which are developed under the best practices with the commitment on the part of the senior level management and the users were very successful and they served the organizations needs effectively. This information is similar to the one which is studied in the learning of Business Information System Analysis under the topic of developing successful information systems. This helps us to learn how to know factors that contribute to the success or failure of an information system. My opinion of the main ideas The success or failure of an information system is a circumstance that can be avoided. To begin with the conception stage is very vital. Professionals need to make very critical research. This is in relation with the industry in which the system is oriented. A case study of hospital care information systems gives the frame work under which the design should be based and where it should not. This is to help us understand the major weaknesses that lead to failure of information systems in organizations (Salazar & David, 1999). It specifies the factors such as the gap between the conception and design of the idea and the needs and requirements of an organization. These two factors must be aligned and looked at critically in order to come up with an idea that incorporates the organizational structure and processes clearly. A shift from the organizations structural needs and design by the model design idea cumulates to a technical execution problem and failure in the system delivery to the organizations system requirement needs therefore leading to lack of customer satisfaction (Salazar & David, 1999). The case study I choose to review is attached to a Health care Information Systems. This indicates that the likely deviations that cause this failure of information systems are for example; when a system design idea meant for a Government organization is implemented to develop a system for the private sector (Salazar & David, 1999). This translates to a failure in the long run because the organizational structure and of the different organizations are totally different and the processes may appear similar but they run differently, thus this is known to be one of the general causes of information system failure, thus this commentary seeks to give an insight to the professionals about the areas of concern in systems development (King & Marples, 1998). From my opinion this reading has clarified the weaknesses that many information systems professional have overlooked.

Other scenarios for this problem of reality gap result when companies that are multinational try to adopt the same system. This may result to a failure since the company might be the same but the organizational structure may differ from country to country. The development of Information systems is mainly based on a model called Information, technology, Processes, objectives and values, staffing and skills, management and structures. (ITPOSMO) (Salazar & David, 1999). This is in relation to the case study explains of a system developed for a hospital and it followed this process but it came out to be unsuccessful because, however we can also find other reasons for the failure of information systems. They do not lie only in the idea the gap between realities in the organization and the development idea and design. There are other underlying factors which also influence the success or failure of an information system. We also need to look at the failure of hardware, lack of adequate documentation and unwillingness of the staff to embrace the change. Business Process Reengineering is a vital process when an organization is adopting a new information system. This help re-organize business processes in order to be efficient in running organizations operations with support of an information system (Hoxmeier, 1998). The reading has over emphasized the failure of information systems on reality and organizational system requirement gap. It has as left out other important factors that need to be put into consideration. This is because they also play a major role in the analysis of the performance of information systems and determine its success or failure(Shoniregun, 2004). Relevance of the reading to the course content This reading is quite in line with the requirements of the course of Business Informations Systems Analysis. This reading has given a deep analysis of the process of development of information systems and the challenges which are likely to be faced. This provides a knowledge base in the process of design, development, implementing, adopting an information systems and maintenance. All this are required to be well mastered by an information systems student and the case studies provide a practice approach in identifying the challenges. Role of business analyst This reading indirectly outlines the qualities and roles of business analyst. It gives us a picture of the knowledge a business analyst has to have the ability of understand and develop the business processes models of an organization. This is to help him understand the system requirements of the organization. It shows us that a business analyst must understand the work flow of the organization so as to be able to improve the processes. He should be able to handle many requirements and avoid missing requirements Thereafter he should be able test the system and determine if the system developed is appropriately fitting the organizations needs and if it delivers or it does not (Hathway & Associates, 2010). Implication and lessons to future students This reading implies that a business analyst should possess the skills of analyzing business processes and also understand how information systems work. It also serves as a lesson to future students to prevent future mistakes that lead to Information system project failures leading to success of future

information systems projects because they will learn from mistakes (Shoniregun, 2004).
