GRADE/LEVEL 6 dd/mm/yyyy

TOPIC The Inner Planets

A. Describe the characteristics of inner planets.
B. Compare the different inner planets using the distinct
LEARNING characteristics
COMPETENCY
(size, no. of satellites, surface temp., mass, density, period of
revolution and rotation)

IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the Learner’s
Activity and Assessment Sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
The Inner Planets

What are the inner planets?

• The INNER PLANETS or TERRESTRIAL PLANETS (in order of distance from the
sun, closest to farthest) are MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, AND MARS.
• THE INNER PLANETS are closer to the Sun and are smaller and rockier.
• TERRESTRIAL PLANET, also known as a TELLURIC PLANET OR ROCKY PLANET
is defined as a planet that is composed primarily of silicate rocks or metals

SAQ-1: What is an inner planet ?

SAQ-2: What are the characteristics of the inner planets?
SAQ-3: Why are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are considered to be inner planets?

Each inner planet has its characteristics different from the others.

Let’s Practice! (Write your answer on the separate sheets provided.)

A. Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct word/s to make the statements correct.
Write your answer on the Learner’s Activity and Assessment Sheets.

1 – 2. Mercury is also a dense planet, composed mostly of____________ and ___________

with an iron core.
3. Venus rotates from ________________while Earth rotates from west to east.
4. Earth is suitable for life because of its ____________and the composition
of its atmosphere.
5. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere composed primarily of ________.

B. Compare the different inner planets based on their distinct characteristics. Then
answer the questions below.

(size, number of satellites, surface temperature, mass, density, period of revolution

and rotation)
PLANET MERCURY VENUS EARTH MARS
Size 4879 km 12,104 km 12,742 km 6779 km
No.of Satellites 0 0 1 2
Surface Temperature -170 to 430 472 -50 to 50 -140 to 20
(°C)
Mass (kg) 3.3 x1023 4.8 x 1024 5.9 x1024 6.4 x 1023

Density 5.4 5.2 5.5 3.9

Period of Revolution 88 225 365 687
(Days)
Period of Rotation 58.6 days 243 days 24 h or 1 day 24 h and 40
(retrograde) min

A satellite is an object in space that orbits or circles around a bigger

object. The surface temperature of a terrestrial planet is determined
by how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and how quickly
it radiates that solar energy back to space.
Planetary mass is a measure of the mass of a planet-like object.
. .
Density is defined as the ratio of the mass of an object to the volume
of space the object takes up
Revolution refers to the movement of a planet around the Sun.
Rotation means self rotation. It spins about an axis.
Retrograde –directing or moving backward.

1. Which among the planets is the biggest? __________________________________

2. Which planets has the most number of satellites? ___________________________
3. Which planet reolves around the sun the slowest? ___________________________
4. Which planet has the longest day and night? ________________________________
5. What inner planet is the heaviest? ________________________________________
6. What is the second hottest planet? ________________________________________
