PHYSIO | Epithelial Tissues | Review Worksheet | KEY

1. Define Tissue: A group of similar cells that function together to carry out specialized activities.

2. List the 4 major types of tissues:

a. Epithelial

b. Connective

c. Muscle

d. Nervous

3. What are the 5 general characteristics of Epithelial Tissue:

a. Consists of mostly or entirely of closely packed cells that are arranged in continues sheets

b. Has an apical surface and a basement membrane

c. Avascular

d. Has a nerve supply

e. High capacity for renewal by cell division

4. Epithelial tissue can be classified by? The number of cell layers and their shape

5. What is the function of glandular epithelium? Secretion

6. Draw the following basic Epithelial Tissue shapes:

Directions: Observe the photomicrographs of the different types of epithelial tissues.

Notice that the connective and epithelial tissues stain differently. Examine how the nuclei of each cell are
stained darker than the cytoplasm of the cell. Locate the basement membrane.
Notice both the apical and basal layers of each type of tissue.

7. Cell Type: Simple Squamous Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? One
c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain: N/A

8. Cell Type: Stratified Columnar Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? Two
c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain:
The apical layer is columnar and the basal layer is cuboidal.

9. Cell Type: Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? One

c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain: N/A
10. Cell Type: Psuedo‐stratified Columnar Epithelium (there is cilia on this one too, shown by arrow)

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? One

c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain: N/A

11. Cell Type: Simple Columnar Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? One

c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain: N/A

12. Cell Type: Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? Two

c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain:
The apical layer is cuboidal and the basal layer is squamous.

13. Cell Type: Stratified Squamous Epithelium

a. Draw a line showing where the basement membrane begins.

b. How many layers of cells are there? More than one

c. If there is more than 1 layer; is each layer the same shape?
Explain:
The apical layer is squamous and the basal layer is cuboidal.
