Multimedia: Audio or Video Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Geographic Regions

Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the
similarities and differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue
Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can observe and research different environments around me.
I can use a platform to create an artifact to show what I learned about different environments.

Selected Instructional Software Tool:

Stop Motion Studio

Or
Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software:
Stop motion studio is a tool where students can take a series or pictures to create a short video.
They can use paper to write or make cut outs to showcase observations and facts that they found
or made while looking into a subject.

Spotify podcasters is a platform that students can use to make a podcast or audio recording to use
their voice to explain what hey learned from their research and observations about their topic.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology tool?)
Please put an X in the box or next to the level(s). Do not highlight or bold the response.

☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
In class the day before the students will watch this short book reading about a boy learning
geography, then I will talk to them about the different environments around the world and how they
have different kinds of animals and plants living their because of their climates and resources. Then,
I will have the students make observations about an environment near them whether it is their
backyard or a park or a town square near their house. I will ask them to make note of the things they
see in the environment like the weather, animals, or plants there. I will also ask them to think of an
environment they would like to research when they come back to school the next day. When they
come back I will go over what we are doing again and give them time to research the environment
that they were interested in looking into. After they have collected some data on the environment
that they were interested in I will have them compare the 2 environments, the one they observed at
home and the one they did their research on, and they will find similarities and differences in the 2
different places. Once they have found those they will choose if they want to make a video
highlighting the 2 different environments or a podcast. They will then either make a storyboard if
they chose the video or write a script if they chose the podcast they will give to the teacher to
review with them and once they are finished they will begin their artifact and we will watch or listen
to their creations as a class once they are all done.
Managing student learning:
This task will help them become more active media users as they develop their skills by using media for
creation. They have many different choices for their research portion as well as choices for the kind of
platform they would like to use. Once they have done their observations and made their choices and are
ready to begin creating they will make a storyboard or script so that I can see what they are making their
video about and offer guidance as they begin.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This supports all students because students get to make their own choices as they go. I am keeping
them engaged in the lesson by making it hand of and letting them do their research on an
environment that interests them. They then get to see how the environments around them are
compared to the environment that they are studying relating it back their own personal lives. They
then also get to share with the class what they learned in a form of media that they choose to make.
Reflection: I think that this will impact student learning because there are freedoms in this lesson for
the students to choose what they are learning about in depth as well as letting them choose how
they convey these messages. Then rather than them sitting through lectures about the different
environments from a teacher they are the ones educating their peers about different environments
through their videos and podcasts. The past of this lesson I am most excited to implement would be
the sharing of the different artifacts because I would love to see what the students came up with in
their finished products and how their classmates react to what they made and what they will learn
from their peers.
