Vikram Sarabhai
He is known as the Father of the Indian Space Program and
majorly contributed in the development of nuclear power in India. H
e founded his own research institute, the Physics Research
Laboratory (PRL), researching on cosmic rays, theoretical physics and radio physics. He was one of the founding members of IIM-Ahmedabad, one of the most successful institutes of education in India. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, an ISRO facility for launch vehicle development, was named so to commemorate him. His family was known for their social work for the underprivileged in society He helped bring television to India due to his consistent communication with NASA. He, along with NASA’s help, set up the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in 1975. India’s first satellite, Aryabhata was mainly developed by him. He was
awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and posthumously awarded
the Padma Vibhushan in 1972. Apart from the science field, he contributed to the economic sector as well. He founded the Operations Research Group (ORG), the first market research organisation in India. He was the vice president for the fourth UN peace conference in 1979, regarding ‘Peaceful uses of atomic energy’ He died also while contributing to the science field, when he was going to Thiruvananthapuram to set up the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station.
