Ostwald process.
-it causes eutrophication in waterbodies which is dangerous and poisonous to people and
aquatic organisms.
-it causes respiratory problems in humans for example asthma and bronchitis.
-it causes air pollution.
-it causes photochemical smog which is detrimental to the environment.
-it forms ground level ozone, commonly referred to as smog, which can damage crops and
vegetation.
-fertilisers produced from nitric acid may reduce soil fertility as they leach easily.
Management of these environmental impacts:
-Ostwald process plants should be located and established far away from homesteads and
communities so that people may not be affected by respiratory problems.
-Crops can be grown in greenhouses, if possible, so as to be protected from the smog released
during Ostwald process.
-Ostwald process must be done far away from waterbodies so as to prevent eutrophication.
-using organic fertiliser instead of nitrogenous fertilisers to boost soil structure as nitrogenous
fertilisers cause leaching.
-use of catalytic decomposers can be done.
-caustic scrubbing can also be done to reduce emission of gaseous pollutants from Ostwald
process.
PART B:
Pollutants emanating from the production of Nitric Acid;
-The manufacture of Nitric acid releases nitrous oxide , N2O, into the atmosphere which
depletes ozone layer and is 273 times more harmful to the climate than CO 2
-The process also involves the oxidation of ammonia to produce nitric acid which is then further
oxidised to nitrogen dioxide.
-Both Nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide are known as major pollutants.
-When these gases are released into the atmosphere ,they react with other pollutants and
sunlight to form ground-level ozone which is also another harmful air pollutant.
-So the major pollutants released during nitric acid production are:
