Importance of physical measurements
 Valuable data about your children’s growth and development.
 Nutritional status .
 Overall general health.
 Accurate assessment of height and weight is also a vital
assessment used to determine appropriate medication dosages.
 Evaluate the effectiveness of drug, fluid, and nutritional
therapy.
 Screen for disease related to abnormal growth

Equipment:
Scale paper cotton alcohol
Procedure:
• Place the scale horizontally
• Check to see that scale is balanced by sitting it to
the zero.
• Wipe the scale with cotton with alcohol.
• Put a scale paper on the scale.
• Remove the child cloths except diaper
• Gently left the infant from the bed
• For safety, hold hand over the body of the infant
• Read the scale when infant is lying still
• Remove and dispose the scale paper and recording

Equipment:-
• Standing type upright scale for older children
Procedure:
• Check that scale is balanced before weighting
• Place a paper towel on the scale for the child to stand
on.
• Keep child privacy
• Child usually weighed while wearing light gown
• Remove shoes of the child and recording

Accurate length measurements
require two measurers.

Equipment's:
hard surface & measuring tape (measuring board if
available).
Procedure:
Place infant supine with head in midline.
Grasp knees and push gently toward table to
fully extend legs.
Measure from vertex of head to heels of feet.
Read & record.
• Boys average = 50 cm
• Girls average = 49 cm
• Normal range for both (47.5- 53.75 cm)
Height
Procedure:
*Remove socks & shoes .
*Have child stand as tall as possible, back straight,
head in midline and eyes looking straight-ahead
.
*Check for flexion of knees ,slumping shoulders and
raising of heels.
*Measure from top of head to standing surface.

Equipment's:
*A measuring tape.
Procedure:
• Measure with measuring tape at
the greatest circumference from
top the eyebrows and pinna of
the ear to occipital prominence.

• Usual findings:
• Plot on growth chart.
• compare percentile

• Comments:
• Usually taken any children under 36 months of age.
• Take any child whose head size appears abnormal

Normal neonatal range: 33-35 cm

• Measuring tape.

• Procedure:-
Pass the measuring tape on the nipple line.

• N.B:-
Measurements are taken once during inspiration and
once during expiration, record the average of the two
values.
Normal range :-30.5 to 33cm

Olecranon process
Procedure:
• With the child’s right arm flexed 90 degree at elbow,
mark midpoint between acromion and olecranon on
posterior aspect of arm.
• Wrap the measuring tape around upper arm at
midpoint.
Skin fold thickness
• Skin fold thickness is index of total body fat.
• Skin fold thickness can be taken at: triceps
(most common site), sub scapula, abdomen or
upper thigh
