Human Activities that Affect The Quality and Quantity of Soil

1. Farming

2. Construction Building

3. Waste Disposal

These are just some of the activities that may affect the quality of our soil.

1. FARMING

- Farming is the act or process of working the ground, planting seeds, and growing edible plants. You can
also describe raising animals for milk or meat as farming. Farming is a great way to describe the lifestyle
and work of people whose jobs are in the agriculture industry.

These are some farming activities that may have negative effects on our soil.

1. Tillage -

what is tillage? tillage is the preparation of soil for planting and the cultivation of soil after planting.
Tillage is the manipulation of the soil into a desired condition by mechanical means; tools are employed
to achieve some desired effect (such as pulverization, cutting, or movement.

all tillage operations, including aeration and sward lifting, cause direct damage to soil macrofauna and
potentially expose them to new predators like badgers, rabbits and gophers,

macrofauna - macrofauna, in soil science, animals that are one centimetre or more long but smaller than
an earthworm. Potworms, myriapods, centipedes, millipedes, slugs, snails, fly larvae, beetles, beetle
larvae, and spiders are typical members of the macrofauna.

they influence the formation and maintenance of soil structure and regulate soil processes, such as
organic matter decomposition and nutrient dynamics.

Nutrient dynamics is broadly defined as the way nutrients are taken up, retained, transferred, and cycled
over time and distance, in an ecosystem

2. use of PESTICIDE

are a diverse group of chemicals used to control insects and other organisms harmful to cultivated plants
and animals. Pesticides are used in agriculture to control weeds, insect infestation and diseases. There
are many different types of pesticides; each is meant to be effective against specific pests. Some
examples include: Algaecides to kill and/or slowing the growth of algae.

Pesticides can contaminate soil, water, and other vegetation.

Roles of earthworms in our soil.

They are the principal agents in mixing dead surface litter with the soil, making the litter more accessible
to decomposition by soil microorganisms

An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone

use of VETERINARY MEDICINES

- Direct application of anti-microbials and nematicides usually used as veterinary medicines to soil has
been shown to have a negative impact on soil organisms. There is also evidence of reduced numbers and
activity of dung beetles where veterinary drugs are used regularly, retarded decomposition rates of dung
are likely to have an impacts on other soil organisms and reduce the positive impact that dung can have
in maintaining soil health

These are some farming activities that may have positive effects on our soil.

1. use of Herbicides/weed killer

Herbicide have both the positive and negative effects to soil once they are used in farming.

have a range of target effects on plant cover (restricting weed emergence and/or growth and stimulating
crop growth) and other living organisms that may compete the plants from water and nutrients, because
of this some nutrients of the soil will be preserve. Since there is no competition among unwanted living
organisms and plants na nasa farm then the nutrients of the soil will be preserve.

Yung negative effects naman nito ay nagre-release naman ito ng some toxins and they have some
modification of the soil fertility at even sa air temperature that will also contribute to soil pollution. Once
na nacontaminate ang soil it will also give water pollution since yung contamination po may pwede po
itong ma-carried ng water.

2. use of Lime and mineral fertilizers

Lime and minerals are the major components of the fertilizer they used to provide stable optimum
growing conditions to need plants naturally and demand to maintain balance nutrients budget. In
general lower rates of application are used in grassland than in cropping systems; however, intensive
dairy pastures may receive high rates of nitrogen fertilisers. In general, balanced fertilization has a
positive impact on soil health.

Example of nitrogen fertilizer.

Potassium nitrate - white na powder

urea - abono

3. Growing plants

Plant growth is directly linked to soil organisms -it is the plant that provides energy through root growth
and exudation in the soil during growth and the amount and quality of litter or residues returned to the
soil.

4. use of Organic manures and other organic fertilizers-

These materials provide inputs of organic matter thus providing a source of energy/ food for many of the
soil organisms. Therefore when applied regularly, organic fertiliser inputs generally lead to an increase in
the populations of all soil organisms.

enhancing microbial biomass activity.
Essential nutrients gaya ng ( NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, and MAGNESIUM).

5. Drainage and irrigation

The main effect of irrigation and drainage on soil organisms and consequently on soil health is indirect.
By regulating the seasonal effects o rainfall patterns, imigation and/or drainage tend to stabilise the soil
moisture regime away from extremes. Irrigation in dry seasons reduces the disturbance effect of soil
drying and can increase the length of time during which soil organisms are active.

yung soil erosion.

Another human activities which we somehow often observe in our environment that will surely affects
soil productivity is the..

Construction of Structure

Soil quality is often overlooked as a crucial component in urban areas, as well as the agricultural
environment. Urban development activities can cause rapid soil degradation and sedimentation.

Once we have this building of a different structure we know that it degrades the soil productivity
because in the presence of other components that will lose its fertility

Soil erosion and sedimentation from construction sites can be significant in quantity and in the impact
on off-site resources such as streams. Erosion, which produces sediment, is accelerated when soil is
disturbed, left bare, and exposed to rainfall. Construction activities, such as grading and filling, reduce
soil quality on construction sites.

WASTE DISPOSAL

Hazardous chemicals that we got from different waste and other substances in their contaminants that
will surely develop soil pollution. This can harm plants when they take up the contamination through
their roots. If humans eat plants and animals that have been in contact with such polluted soils, there
can be negative impact on their health.

As different waste materials and pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides, plastic, litter and
pharmaceuticals sit on top of and leach into our soil, nababago nila at nade-degrade nila yung natural
composition sa soil. As leachate percolates into the soil, it migrates contaminants into the soil
naapektuhan nito yung stability at strength nung ating soil.
