CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), also known as Industrial
Training is a compulsory skills training programme designed to expose and prepare students of
Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics, College of Education, College of Technology and College
of Agriculture, for the industrial work situation they’re likely to meet after graduation.
The scheme also affords student the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the
needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their
institution.
Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern among industrialists, that
graduate of institution of higher learning lacked adequate practical background studies
preparatory for employment in industries.
Thus, employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education in higher institutions wasn’t
responsive to the needs of the employers of labour.
SIWES introduction, initiation and design was done by the Institution Training Fund (ITF) in
1993 to acquaint student with the skills of handling employer’s equipment and machinery.
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) solely funded the scheme during its formative years.
However, due to financial constraints, the fund withdrew from the scheme in 1978.
The federal Government, noting the significance of the skills training handed the management of
the scheme to both the National University Commission (NUC) and the National Board for
Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979.
The management and implementation of the scheme was however reverted to the ITF by the
federal Government in November, 1984 and the administration was effectively taken over by the
Industrial Training Fund in July 1985, with the funding solely borne by the federal Government.
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF SIWES
SIWES gives room for student in institution of higher learning to acquire industrial skill and
experience in their field of study
Prepare the student for the industrial work practices they are likely to encounter after
graduation.
Expose student to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that
may not available in their institution.
Make the epidemic from school to the world of work easier and enhance the chances of
students’ contact for later job placement.
SIWES gives student an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work scenarios thereby
bridging the gap between theory and practices.
Provides the avenue for student in institution of higher learning to acquire industrial skill and
experiences in their course of study.
Prepares the student for the industrial work situation they’re likely to meet after graduation.
Expose students to work method and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that
may not be available in their institutions.
Make the transition from school to the world of work easier and enhance students contact for
later job placement.
Provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situations
thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Enlist and strengthens employer’s involvement in the entire educational process and prepare
students for employment after graduation.

CHAPTER THREE
3.1 SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER
A computer is a machine that can be programmed to accept data (input), process it into useful
information (output), and store it away (in a secondary storage device) for it or later reuse. The
processing of input to output is directed by the software but performed by the hardware.
PART OF A COMPUTER
There are 5 different parts of a computer
A motherboard
A Central Processing Unit (CPU)
A Graphic Processing Unit (GPU), also known as video card.
Random Access Memory (RAM), also known as volatile memory.
Storage: Solid State Drive (SSD) or Hard Disk Drive (HDD).
INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICES
Depending on the type of computer you have, there are lots of devices you can
connect to your computer to input information and also output it. Some examples of
input devices are the mouse, the keyboard, and the webcam. Example of output
devices include monitors, speaker, etc. There are also removable devices, such as SD
cards and flash drives, which can be used to transfer data to and from your computer.
Solid state drives have the same kind of memory as the one on your phone or flash drive, also
known as flash memory. They cost more but are also faster and more efficient than traditional
hard drives.
The data stored in the hard drives does not disappear when you switch your computer off. It will
be there when you switch the computer back on. You are, however, advised to keep it far away
from magnets as they could damage it and cause you to lose your information.
The video card is a dedicated component that hands the images output by your monitor display.
They come with their own RAM, dedicated to this singular purpose. If your work involves
highly visual work at very high definitions, then you should get yourself a video card to take the
load off your RAM.
Sometimes, the computer may have integrated graphics, where some of the RAM is borrowed for
graphics processing. This happens frequently on laptops, because there is a need to save space.
Using a graphics card, but not sufficient for intense graphic function.
These have become a lot less common today, with many machines doing away with them
altogether. An optical drive is used to read CDs and DVDs, which can be used to listen to music
or watch movies. They can also be used to install software, play games, or write new information
into a disk.
FUNCTION OF KEYBOARD
Keyboard is used for typing message for communication.
Keyboard is used for receptacle for anger and frustration techniques.
Keyboard is used for seating, most notable for those of the feline persuasion.
Keyboard is used for entering text.
Keyboard is used to operate some devices.

Ctrl+Z pressing these two keys will undo any action.
LAMINATION
An examples of a type of laminate using different materials would be the application of a layer
of plastics film____ the “laminate” _____on either side of a sheet of glass____ the laminated
subject. Vehicle windshield are commonly made as composites created by laminating a tough
plastics film between two layers of glass. This is to prevent shards of glass detaching from the
windshield in case it breaks.
Plywood is a common examples of a laminate using the same material in each layer combined
with epoxy. Glued and laminated dimensional timber is used in the construction industry to
make beams (glued laminated timber), in sizes larger and stronger than those that can be
obtained from singles pieces of wood.
Electrical equipment such as transformers and motors usually use a steel laminate to form the
core of the coils used to produce magnetic fields. The thin lamination reduces the signal loss due
to eddy current.
Excel is typically used to organize data and perform financial analysis. It is used across all
business function and at companies from small to large. The main uses of excel is data entry.
Microsoft excel is a spreadsheet program. that means it’s used to create grids of text, numbers,
and formulas specifying calculations. That’s extremely valuable for many business, which use it
to record expenditures and incomes, plans budgets, chart data and succinctly present fiscal
results.
If you excel spreadsheet has a lot of formulas, there are a couple of things you can do to make it
look a lot more professional. First of all, avoid doing any repeated calculations and only
calculate formulas once.
If you copy a formula, you increase the chances of having errors. Not to mention that if you
change one formula, the duplicate that you made previously will not change. This can lead to a
lot of confusing errors.
If you need to use the exact same formula again, it’s better to refer back to the first instance
where you had to use the formula.
In addition, you should always avoid using fixed number in formulas. Instead, what you should
use for the values is values is separate input cells and employ the references to this cell when
using it in calculations.
4.2 RECOMMENDATION
This student industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programme should be made
compulsory and mandatory for all students. The student involve should be orient about benefit
and essence of SIWES.
Student should be made aware of and get corrected that SIWES is not for money acquisition
rather it is for knowledge, experience and practical exposure to his/her course of study for future
benefits proper welfare of student should be catered for (in terms of treatment).
