PUMPS (2)

1. A double suction, single stage, centrifugal pump delivers 900 m3/hr of sea
water (SG=1.03) from a source where the water level varies two meters from
high tide to low tide level. The pump centerline is located 2.6 meters above
the surface of the water at high tide level. The pump discharges into a
surface condenser, 3 m above the pump centerline. Loss of head due to
friction in the suction pipe is 0.8m and that in the discharge side is 3m. Pump
is directly coupled to a 1750 rpm, 460V, 3-phase, 60 Hz motor. Calculate the
total suction head in meters, total discharge head in meters, the specific
speed of the pump in rpm, the impeller diameter in mm, and the pump HP
if efficiency is 82%.
2. Water from an open reservoir A at 8m elevation is drawn by a motor-driven
pump to an open reservoir B at 70m elevation. The inside diameter of the
suction pipe is 200 mm and 150mm for the discharge pipe. The suction line
has a lost of head 3 times that of the velocity head in the 200mm pipe. The
discharge line has a loss of head 20 times that of the velocity in the
discharge pipeline. The pump centerline is at 4m. Overall efficiency of the
system is 78%. For a discharge rate of 10 Li/sec, find the power input to the
motor and the pressure gage readings installed just at the outlet and inlet
of the pump in kPag.
3. A pump is to deliver 80gpm of water at 1400F with a discharge pressure of
150 psig. The suction pressure indicates 2 inHg vacuum. The diameter of
suction and discharge pipes are 5 in and 4 in respectively. The pump has
an efficiency of 70%, while the motor efficiency is 80%. Determine the water
HP of the pump, power input to the driving motor and the combined motor-
pump efficiency.
4. A centrifugal pump designed for a 1800 rpm operation and a head of
60.9m has a capacity of 189.3 li/sec with a power input of 130.6 kW. What
effect will the speed reduction to 1200 rpm have on the head, capacity,
and power input of the pump? What will be the change of these variables
if the impeller diameter is reduced from 304.8mm to 254mm while the speed
is held constant at 1800 rpm?
