Is knowledge in speed important?

In what sense?

speed?

D. Lesson Let us study this example. The learners will participate in

Proper Jonathan bought a new car. He drove his discussing the lesson.
car from Manila to Baguio City at an
average speed of 65 km/hour for a total of
4.5 hour. How far did he travel?

Manila
Baguio

In this problem, we were given a speed

of 65 km/ hour at a time of 4.5 hours. To
find the total distance travelled, we can
simply multiply the given speed and time.

Distance = 65 x 4.5

65

x 4.5
_______

325

+ 260

_______

292.5

He traveled 292. 5 kilometers.

The relationship between speed,

distance, and time can be expressed in
the following:

To further understand the relationship

between these terms (Speed, Distance
and Time) in the formula, analyze the
situation below.

When we say a track event at the

Palarong Pambansa is 500 meter long,
we are defining its distance. Yet most
people are interested in the time taken to
run it. Equally, however we could consider
them to run a longer distance in the same
time. Both points of view are exactly the
same. All that we are talking about is their
average speed which is depend by:

Definition of Average speed

Average speed is a measure of the

distance in a given period of time. It is
sometimes refer to as the ratio of distance
and time.

Why is the term average speed used?

Think about how the race happens-they

start from being at rest, speed up, and run
at almost the same speed throughout.

In everyday life, we use speeds like

kilometer per hour (km/h) whereas in the
race we use meter per second. (m/s)

A fast-moving object has a high speed

and covers a relatively long distance in a
short amount of time. Contrast this to
slow-moving object that has low speed
and covers a relatively small amount of
distance in the same amount of time. An
object with no movement at all has zero
speed.
E. Application Conduct Group Activity Group 1

Group 1 1. 450 ÷ 5 = 90 km/h

Compute for speed. 2. 200 ÷ 25 = 8m/s

Group 2

1. 80÷ 40 = 2 hours

2. 1800 ÷ 20 = 90

3. 180 ÷ 3 =60 seconds

Group 3

1. 600 km

2. 15 x 2.5 = 30 km

3. 80 x 19 = 1520 km

Group 2

Calculate for the Time

1. Driving 80 km at 40km/h

2.Racing 1800 m at 20 m/s

3. Swimming 180 m at 3 m/s

Group 3
F. What have you learned from the lesson? Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to
Generalization how fast an object is moving. Speed can
be thought of as the rate at which an
object covers distance.

IV. Evaluation Calculate the distance that you would 1. 2 x 30 = 60 km

travel if you drove for:
1. 2 hours at 30 km/h 2. 7 x 45 = 315
2. 7 hours at 45 km/h
3. 200/20= 10 hours
How long that it takes to travel
3. 100 km at 20 km/h 4. 180/45= 4 hours
4. 180 km at 45 km/h
Solve 5. 200/5 = 40 km/h
5. How far did the car travel 200 km for 5
hours?

V. A. Agreement Assignment: A. 1.800/ 8 = 100km/h

A. A car travels 800 km in 8 hours. 2. 800/(8 x 60)=

Calculate the average speed in the car in
800/ 480= 1.67 km/m
a. kilometres per hour

b. kilometres per minutes

B. Advance
B. Steven drove from place A to place B
at an average speed of 50 km/h. At the B. 15 km
same time, Joseph drove fromplace B to
place A at an average speed of 60 km/h
using the same route. If the distance
between A and B were 300 km, what is
the distance between Steven and Joseph
after 1 ½ hour.
