Plural and singular nouns

Singular nouns ending in 's', 'ss', 'sh', 'ch', 'x', or 'z'

following singular nouns to plural ones.

Irregular nouns that end in an 'f' become plural when you to change the 'f' to a 'v' and then
add an 'es' at the end. Nouns that end in 'y' become plural after you change the 'y' to an 'i', and
then add an 'es' at the end. Nouns ending in 'y' that have a vowel right before the 'y' usually
just require an 's' ending. Also, a hyphenated compound noun becomes plural when you make
the first noun plural. Try pluralizing these irregular verbs!

We add ' to plural nouns ending in -s:

This is my parents' house.

Those are ladies' shoes.

But we use 's with irregular plural nouns:

men womenchildren people

These are men's shoes.

Children's clothes are very expensive.

We can use a possessive instead of a full noun phrase to avoid repeating words:

Is that John's car?

No, it's Mary's. (NOT No, it's Mary's [car].)

Whose coat is this?

It's my wife's. (NOT It's my wife's [coat].)

существительные, чтобы избежать повторов и для создания определенного
стилистического эффекта)

5. Clothes memory (15-20mins)

Students close their eyes and are tested on what their teacher and classmates are wearing.
This can be done with the questions being asked by the teacher, by other teams, or by their
partner. If you can’t trust them to close their eyes, send one or two people outside the
classroom, ask questions about those people’s clothes, and check the students’ answers when
those people come back in.
Clothes memory 2
You can do something similar to Clothes Memory above with a picture. Students look at what
the people in the picture are wearing, turn over the picture, and then are tested on it. This
works best if it is a picture of a situation where they really might try to remember what
people were wearing, e.g. just before a crime happened or a fashion show catwalk.

10. Game (30 mins)

Name of the game: "I do, you do, we do"

Objective: To practice using the present simple tense correctly in affirmative, negative, and
question forms.

Materials needed:

• A set of cards with present simple verbs written on them.

• A board or a piece of paper to write down the rules and keep score.

How to play:

Divide the class into groups of three or four students.

Give each group a set of cards with present simple verbs written on them.

Explain the rules of the game:

a. The first player picks a card and says the verb out loud in the affirmative form, "I _____ (verb)."

b. The second player repeats the same verb in the negative form, "You _____ not (verb)."

c. The third player asks a question using the same verb, "Do we _____ (verb)?"

If a student makes a mistake in their sentence, the group gets a point deducted.

After each round, the next player in the group takes a turn, and the game continues until all the cards
have been used.

The group with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Variations:

• To make the game more challenging, you can add adverbs of frequency or time expressions to the
present simple sentences.

• You can also ask students to switch verbs with classmates to practice different forms.

• For lower level students, you can substitute the verbs with pictures or drawings to make the game
more accessible.
