IV. PROCEDURES Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Preliminary
a. Review/ Drill Last meeting, we talked about
the glossary. We have learned
that a glossary is a special
dictionary found in a book. It
helps us understand the
meaning of the difficult words
used in the book. I have here
an excerpt of a glossary. I will
flash a word and you will look
for its meaning in the glossary.

cancer A disease caused by the

unusual growth of cells in
the body

dinosaur A group of huge reptiles

which are now extinct
dermis The inner layer of the skin

Very good, children!

B. Lesson Proper
a. Motivation For now, let us have a pair
activity. Your seatmate would
be your partner in answering
the questions. You will share
your answers to him/her.
(After every question, the
teacher asks a pupils to share
his answer to the class.)

1. Why do you go to school? I go to school because I

want to finish my studies.

2. Why do you take a bath I take a bath everyday

everyday? because I want to stay
clean.

3. Why do you stay at home

during a typhoon? It is dangerous outside so I
stay at home during a
typhoon.

Good answers, class.

b. Presentation Today, we will discuss cause
and effect relationship. At the
end of the lesson, you will be
able to identify the cause and
effect in the given situations.

c. Modelling A cause- effect relationship

describes something that
happens and why it happens.
The cause is the reason and
the effect is the result of an
event. The cause brings out
an event called its result or
effect.

These are my answers to the

questions that I gave a while
ago.

1. Why do you go to school?

*I go to school because I want
to finish my studies.

The word “because” signals

the cause. The clause that
comes after it is the cause. So,
“because I want to finish my
studies” is the cause while “I
go to school” is the effect.
Let me proceed to my answer
for the second question.

2. Why do you take a bath

everyday?

* I take a bath everyday

because I want to stay clean.

The sentence uses the signal

word “because”, so it is easier
for us to identify the cause.
“Because I want to stay clean”
is the cause while the
remaining clause “I take a
bath” is obviously the effect.

Let’s have the last question.

3. Why do you stay at home

during a typhoon?

* It is dangerous outside so I
stay at home during a
typhoon.

The sentence does not use

the “because”, instead it uses
the word “so”. This word
signals the effect. With that,
“so I stay at home during a
typhoon” is the effect while the
cause is “it is dangerous
outside”.

Another technique to identify

the cause and effect is to
analyze which between the
two events in the sentence
happens first. That event that
first took place is certainly the
cause and the event that
resulted to it is the effect.

Again, “because” signals the

cause, while “so” signals the
effect.

d. Guided Practice 1 Let’s practice identifying the

cause and effect. Each face of Note: The cause is
