In 2009 I went to Seoul for the first time to teach English. As soon as I landed, I
met my host family including her 2 kids and mother. I asked if we could have dinner in a
restaurant that served fish, as I was a pescatarian. Unlike Western restaurants, Korean
restaurants usually specialize in a specific dish. In Korea, it’s usually the oldest person
that chooses what to order so I could not choose a menu.
My first surprise was the banchan (side dishes) that were included with the meal. I
was overwhelmed by all the “exotic” smells, tastes and textures while sitting on the floor.
But the most surprising part was the main dish. The waiter brought out some octopus
tentacles which were still moving on the plate as if trying to escape. I wasn’t home
anymore.
The grandmother kept wrapping the life octopus (called sannakji) in some lettuce
and stuffing it down my throat. In Korea, age and position are of great importance, so I
just had to swallow what I was given.
After the meal, we went to a supermarket. I looked for cereal and milk for breakfast
for the next day, but my host suggested tuna and ramen, this was also a first. Breakfast
for me was usually cold, but she insisted I have a warm meal, even though it was mid-
summer.
This was the first experience that opened my eyes to the intricacies of cultural
norms. What is considered “weird” at one end of the world is totally normal at the other
end. I learned to just open my mouth and take a big bite of that difference.

The Deceitful King

The king of Tiangkerarasen was blessed with several sons and daughters. One day
the king met a beautiful young maiden whom he married despite the queen and
children’s anger.
When the young bride became pregnant, the queen and her children disliked her
even more. The situation was so hard for the king so he planned to free himself of his
young wife. One day, he took his young wife to a large river in a boat. While she was
engrossed in the scenery, the king pushed her into the river. Downstream, a fisherman

Later, the woman gave birth to the son named Aji Bonar. Growing up, he enjoyed

fascinated the prince, leading to even higher bets. The gamble continued to the ultimate
stake.

kingdom and all its possessions as a bet to Aji Bonar. If Aji lost, he had to return all his
winnings to the king. On the contrary, if the prince lost, he would surrender the kingdom
to Aji. Aji Bonar's spinning tops spun rapidly, swiftly overpowering the prince's. Finally,

Tips for Identifying Good Online Sources

The internet makes research on almost any topic more convenient and accessible than in
the past, but it also presents some challenges. With all the information that’s online, how
do you know if you’re using a reliable source? The following tips will help you tell a good
source from one that’s biased, outdated, or inaccurate:
1. Check the domain name
Look for endings like ".edu," ".gov," and ".org," which are usually reliable.
Nonprofit websites may also contain reliable information, but take some time to
consider the organization’s purpose and agenda to determine if it could be biased.
2. Look at the source
See if the article has an author and if they back up their claims with facts. Check
when it was published to make sure it is up-to-date. Old data might not be useful
anymore.
3. Double-check with other sources
Verify the information with other trustworthy sites to make sure it's accurate.
4. Beyond the Headline
If a headline appears sensational or radical, it is important to read the article
carefully to understand the context and the source of the statement.
5. Be careful with certain sources
Websites like Wikipedia and individual blogs can be a good starting point, but don't
rely on them completely for accurate information.

21. The text will most likely interest someone who ….

A. looks for up-to-date news
B. wants to build new websites

advertising, public speaking, fundraising, and community outreach. The objective is to
effectively communicate the candidate`s vision, policies, and qualifications to the
electorate, while also highlighting any shortcomings or negative aspects of the opposition.
One crucial aspect of a successful campaign is the ability to connect with voters on
a personal level. Candidates must also be prepared to engage in debates and answer
tough questions, demonstrating their knowledge, experience, and ability to lead. In
today's digital age, political campaigns have evolved to incorporate social media, online
advertising, and data analysis to target potential voters and track campaign progress.
However, there is a risk of negative campaigning, which can involve personal attacks,
misleading information, or fear-mongering to influence voters.
In conclusion, political campaigns are a vital component of the democratic process,
allowing candidates to present their vision and qualifications to the electorate. It is crucial
to approach campaigns with honesty, respect, and a commitment to fostering a more
informed and engaged society.

WE ARE THE WORLD

There comes a time

When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need

We are the world

We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

Oh, send them your heart

So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all

But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one, yeah, yeah, yeah

The Southern Lights

The southern lights are also known as the aurora australis, meaning the southerly
light of dawn. Captain James Cook named the phenomenon in the southern hemisphere
‘aurora australis’, following his voyage of discovery to the Antarctic in Resolution (1772–
75). ‘Australis’ is derived from the Latin word meaning southern. The word also represents
the ancient gods of the south wind (Auster) in Greek mythology.
The southern lights occur when electrically charged solar particles collide with
atmospheric gasses. The resulting energy translates into a brightly glowing lightshow. It
lasts for a matter of minutes and sometimes reappears over several days. The colours
range from red and green to yellow, purple or blue.
Aurora australis occurs in less-accessible places near the South Pole, including
Antarctica and Down Under in Australia, Tasmania, an island state of Australia, south of
the mainland, and New Zealand. The closer you are to the southern magnetic pole, the
better your chances of seeing the aurora australis. Look for spots with unobstructed views
facing south.
People can catch the southern lights almost any time of the year in Tasmania, but
they’re more likely to see them when the night skies are clear, dark, and cloudless. The
months from March to September are best thanks to longer, darker nights. Bear in mind
that since the aurora is dependent on unpredictable sunspots and solar winds, even
scientific predictions can be unreliable.

44. Paragraph three mainly talks about the aurora australis’ ….

A. origin of name
B. best viewing spots
C. general description
D. times of occurrence
