Introducing Michael C. (Mike) Spencer

In his letter to The Williams School Head Search Committee, Mike Spencer wrote, I believe every child can learn and do so at high levels of understanding. In addition, every child has a desire to learn and to grow intellectually as well as socially. For this to be realized there are several variables that come into play. First, children need the active support of all of the influential adults in their lives. Parents, educators, and other significant figures need to act as teachers, mentors, and guides. Second, children need to be exposed to a challenging, relevant, and engaging body of knowledge not only in the school setting but throughout their day. Adults need to address each students Mike with grandsons Ryan and Adam natural curiosity as part of the learning process. Third, there needs to be a strong, positive, and productive relationship between the child and his teachers. This relationship, as much as anything, will produce an active learning environment. Last, the child must be taught in a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment. Of course, we expect the environment to be physically safe and secure. But it also needs to be academically safe, in which children are free to learn and express and experiment with new ideas and skills. Mike brings this educational philosophy, honed from 38 years of experience as an educator and administrator, to The Williams School which he believes does have the environment he outlines above. For the past eight years Mike has been the Chief Operations Officer of Norfolk Public Schools. Prior to that assignment, Mike was the Principal of Maury High School for eight years. While at Maury, Mike put in place resources that resulted in a lowering of the drop-out rate from 10% to 2% in just one year. He also resurrected the Maury Foundation, a non-profit foundation providing resources to the school. Mike was recognized as the Virginia Secondary Principal of the Year in 1999 due to his many achievements while at Maury. After beginning his career as a math teacher, Mike served as Principal of two local middle schools, and as a Chief Public Information Officer. Mike also has deep experience in curriculum development at the elementary, middle and high school levels and has received numerous professional awards both as an educator and administrator. A lifelong resident of Norfolk, Mike graduated from Old Dominion University with a BS in Secondary Education and an MS in Educational Administration. He has deep community roots serving as Chairman of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Education Committee for seven years, as Board Member and President of the Ghent Neighborhood League, as well as serving on the Boards of Girls, Inc. and the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mike and his wife Karen have a daughter, Kate, and two grandchildren, Adam Spencer and Ryan Zackary.

Thanks to Debbie Adams, TWS now has a photo hosting site that is secure and allows parents to upload photos via email. The address for our site is thewilliamsschool.smugmug.com. It is a secure site, meaning our photos wont be found by an image search on the internet. The site is also branded with our school identification. The password to access our photo site is the school phone number (without the dash). You may view the galleries already uploaded. If you would like one of the pictures, simply right-click and choose save image as from your browser (PC directions) and choose the location on your computer where you would like to save the photo. To upload photos via email, follow the steps below. Smugmug prefers the jpg (jpeg) format for your photos: 1. Compose an email containing one or more photos or attach the photos to the email and send to [email protected]. 2. Type your photo email password into the subject line (the school phone number is the password do not include the dash) 3. Type the photo's caption into the body of the email (optional). 4. Send. SmugMug will automatically create a gallery named "email" and place your photos in it.

TWS Girl Scouts visit the Hampton Roads Show.

Once you upload, please send [email protected] an email and let her know the category for your photos (such as family picnic or auction). Hopefully that will help us stay a little organized as I can then move the photos into galleries.

In the Know! You are able to sign up for text alerts, specifically weather related school closings at www.wvec.com/textalerts. There are easy to follow steps for subscribing to the text alerts there are other alerts you may choose in addition to school closings. The school list is alphabetical so The Williams School is towards the bottom of the list.

Carrie Anderson Barbier, a former TWS Student and Becky Andersons daughter, has been nominated for Top Teacher in Hampton Roads in the Hampton Roads Magazine. Please take a minute to vote for her. Thanks, Becky

Grandparents Day Tuesday, November 22nd EVERYONE IS INVITED!

Too often in a small school we forget that our traditions are not clear to all members of our school family. Certainly it is a day to recognize and thank our grandparents. But, it is also a day to spend with mothers and fathers, and even uncles and aunts and special adult friends. So, we ask and encourage parents to attend the day with their children as well as grandparents. In addition, if your child does not have a grandparent who can attend, any adult member of the family or extended family is welcome as well. The goal of this service is to gather together as a school family before we break for the holidays. All are welcome. **Please note this is a dress up day for students** 8:05 Meet your student The following grades meet guests and start tour in Old Main (419 Colonial) K- Kindergarten Room 2nd Grade 2 Room 4th Grade 4 Room 5th Grade 5 Rooms th 8 Mrs. Justesens Room 7th Mrs. Lindgrens Room The following grades meet guests and start tour in Humanities Center (418 Colonial) 1st Library 3rd Art Room 6th Science Room **Grandparents (special guests) that have more than one grandchild in the school should meet the oldest first and then pick-up younger grandchildren before starting the school tour. 8:15 9:15 School Tour 9:00 Band Students report to the MPR and depart for the Chrysler 9:15 Students return to the same classroom they started the day in. 9:15 Guests may walk to the Chrysler or take the bus. 9:20 - Buses depart from the side of Old Main on Fairfax Avenue 9:30 10:15 Student Performance 10:15 - Dismissal in Huber Court 10:15 11:00 Individual art tours optional 10:20 &10:40 Buses to school
