C. Installing the Peripherals

Install is the action or process of putting the parts together to form as a whole.
In a computer system this process involves the connection of the peripherals for the
computer internally (inside the CPU or case) or externally (through the peripheral ports)
which is considered as the hardware devices. Aside from this hardwares, installation of
computer programs (or installer) is needed to link the hardware parts together through
a set of instructions provided by the software. Installers contain executable files
with specific configuration for the particular hardware device/s connected to the
computer. In some cases, the System Software allow the configuration of most of the
connected devices in the computer system; however, there are other peripherals

//aceg/lmbp 7
including the motherboard that requires separate installer for some of its ports to be
available as motherboard CD/DVD installer, printer CD/DVD installer and other devices.

• Install Common Input Peripherals

1. The Keyboard
Keyboard is the basic input device connected to our computer system and the
cable of this unit is connected to the USB port at the back panel of the desktop computer.
Latest development uses a wireless keyboard which can be plug-and-play device or
provided by a software to install this wireless unit, just follow the on-screen instruction
when installing the device. Old keyboards has a round plug 6-pin PS/2 that is used for
the computer; whatever keyboard you use it is important that it is installed to the
computer prior to its operation.

2. The Mouse
Mouse is one of the common peripherals connected to your desktop computer
and connected normally to the USB port at the back panel of the CPU case. Mouse is
a plug-and-play device that once the operating system (OS) of the computer has been
installed this device can be easily detected. Latest development uses the wireless
mouse, it can be a plug-and-play device, if it not, a software provided in its package
need to be installed to allow the wireless mouse to be operational. In the older computer
system, mouse is connected through the serial port of the computer (because the
connecting cable has a 9-pin plug), likewise there were also a mouse designed and
connected through the PS/2 port because the connecting cable of the mouse is the 6-
pin PS/2 plug. Whatever mouse you have connected, this is still an important scrolling
device on your computer.

//aceg/lmbp 8
• Install Common Output Peripherals
1. The Monitor
Monitor is the display screen of the computer, it shows the contents being done
by the user to this visual interface unit of the system. There are 2 cables in a monitor,
one is the VGA cable to be connected to the VGA port (or HDMI cable to be connected
to HDMI port) and the other one is the power cable to be plugged in a wall outlet.
Normally this unit is a plug-and-play device on your computer, however there are
instances that the monitor could not provide a better resolution or screen view because
such monitor need to install an installer provided on the monitor package, follow the on-
screen instruction in the installation of the software for the monitor and such will be able
to provide a better viewing resolution or display on its screen.
Recent technological development has an available touchscreen monitors which
are mostly designed for laptop computers and tablets, these were made possible by
using hardwares and softwares that are not common for desktop computers, and costs
differently with the basic computer you are using.

2. The Speakers
Speakers are used to provide audio system for music, online live messages,
movies and educational videos. Installing the speakers will need you to insert the plug
to the audio interface at the back panel of the computer and a power unit for that
speakers to work. Most instances, the speakers’ are plug-and-play because in the
installation of the operating system on the computer this device is included in its
installation; if it is not included in that installation a separate motherboard driver/installer
should be installed to the computer to make this device operational, follow on-screen
instruction in the installation.

//aceg/lmbp 9
3. The Printer
Printer is an output peripheral in a computer system, once the user of the
computer has completed the processing of the data and needed a hard copy the
commands for the printing process will be executed. This device is an add-on unit, this
requires installation of its executable files connected to the computer. There are 2
cables for the printer, one cable should be connected to the USB port at the back panel
of the computer, and the other cable to the wall outlet. Installing the software of the
printer should be done as follows:
- Insert the CD (or DVD provided in the printer package) to the CD/DVD drive of
the computer
- Select “Setup” to begin installing the software
- Follow on-screen instruction until the completion of the installation.
