November 2011 GOOD TIMES 3

By Ronda Addy The 1950s saw the end of WWII and the start of many important changes, including the rise of the American economy. As GIs returned home to attend college under the G.I. Bill, American industry prospered now that it could supply goods that had once been unavailable due to the war. Along with prosperity, the 1950s saw a rise in conflict. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, the United States became embroiled in a Cold War with the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1991. On June 25, 1950, the Korean Conflict started as a civil war between North and South Korea, both of which were competing for power after the division of the country. The conflict escalated to include the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China in support of North Korea and the

United States, Canada, Turkey, the Philippines and the United Kingdom in support of South Korea. On November 29, 1952, President-elect Dwight Eisenhower went to Korea to see what could be done to end the conflict. When India proposed a Korean armistice, the UN accepted it and a cease-fire occurred on July 27, 1953. No formal treaty was ever signed to end the conflict, and today, a demilitarized zone remains manned by North Korean soldiers on one side and South Korean and American soldiers on the other. On the literary front, many accomplishments took place during the 1950s. Several notable books were published, including William Goldings Lord of the Flies, Norman Vincent Peales The Power of Positive Thinking, J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye and John Steinbecks East of Eden. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a group of writers called the beat generation created some of their most important works, including William Burroughs Naked Lunch, Allen Ginsbergs Howl and Jack Kerouacs On the Road. During the 1950s, TV replaced radio as the dominant form of family entertainment. Viewers were treated to such shows as The Ed Sullivan Show, Father Knows Best, The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Lassie and The Twilight Zone. By 1954, color broadcasts begin replacing black and white ones, and news segments featured live events from around the world. Sports was also big during the 1950s. Popular figures included Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Rocky Marciano, Willie Mays and Sugar Ray Robinson. Other notable events of the 1950s included: President Harry Truman gave approval for work to begin on the hydrogen bomb in 1950. The Immigration and Naturalization Act was signed in 1952, removing racial and ethnic barriers to those wishing to become U.S. citizens. Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were electrocuted in 1953 after being convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit espionage and

THE AMERICAN SOLDIER

A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO IRAQ This stirring exhibition is on display at the Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio until December 31, 2011 This exhibition includes photographs from nine wars, starting with the bloody Civil War clashes in the nations heartland to the fighting in the streets of Baghdad. Its about those soldiers who know the face of the enemy and the hellfire of war. The exhibits photographs from the past 150 years of American military service demonstrate the powerful similarities between American soldiers from century to century. Most of the photographs were taken by well-known photographers including Mathew Brady (Civil War), David Douglas Duncan (WWII and the Korean War) and David Leeson (the Iraq war). But some of the most powerful images were taken by the soldiers themselves. Though its more than 150 years since the birth of photography, the camera has become the soldiers historical notebook, recording the lives and times of these brave warriors. As photography improved, so did the record of the American soldier. The camera got closer and closer to a soldiers life as it captured hard times, humor, courage, camaraderie, honor, victory and for some, the ultimate sacrifice, death. The powerful American Soldier photo collection made its debut in 2007, and has since traveled across the United States for extended exhibitions at nine venues. The exhibits curator and producer Cyma Rubin says overall response has been tremendous, with the tribute attracting visitors of all kinds from students and families to veterans and active duty military personnel. To date, it has been viewed by approximately 900,000 people. One of the most poignant shows a sergeant savoring a letter from his wife. Photographer Cheryl Diaz Meyer, a Dallas Morning News photographer who won a 2004 Pulitzer Prize for the image, captures the soldier with his eyes shut while he sniffs the flowered stationery for a scent of home. Other heartfelt moments between American soldiers and foreign civilians put a human face on war. A French woman greets a GI during World War II with outstretched arms. Vietnamese children gaze at a paratrooper holding a grenade launcher on a canal bank. A young Iraqi girl follows in the footsteps of a burly, camouflaged soldier patrolling her neighborhood. MYSTERIES By Paul Niemann

Mars and Hershey share a secret
Have you ever wondered how certain products get their names? Take M & Ms, for example. What do the two Ms stand for? The answer will surprise you and you will probably remember this story every time you eat M & Ms in the future, just like youve noticed the arrow in the FedEx logo ever since someone first told you about it. Last week my mother-in-law gave me a book, titled The Emperors of Chocolate, which tells the story of the Mars and Hershey chocolate companies. Naturally, when my bride of six months who is convinced that chocolate is one of the four main food groups heard that this weeks story is about chocolate, she asked if this means that we will be going to Hershey, Pennsylvania, any time soon. But I digress. Mars was founded by Forrest Mars, Sr., in 1920, while Hershey was founded by Milton Hershey in 1894. The two companies are bitter rivals that, together, control 95% of the candy market in the United States. There are several interesting things about the Mars and Hershey chocolate companies and the entire chocolate industry, for that matter. For example, at Mars, they are so focused on quality that millions of M & Ms are thrown out every day simply because the Ms are not applied properly. Yet when Forrest Mars, Jr. and his brother and sister were growing up in the 1940s, their father never let them eat M & Ms because he said they couldnt spare any of them. Meanwhile, Milton Hershey founded the Lancaster Caramel Company in 1890, and had turned it into the nations largest caramel company by 1900. He was at the top of the business world when he sold it

for $1 million that year. Before he sold it, he had already discovered the opportunity that chocolate presented him, so he founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. His chocolate company was the first one to sell its products nationwide. Within a few years, he had built an entire town that would later become known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Both founders Forrest Mars, Sr., and Milton Hershey had to get away from their fathers before they became successful. Milton Hersheys first two companies failed after his father interfered by trying to get the son to expand too fast. Forrest Mars, on the other hand, was kicked out of his fathers chocolate company when he interfered by trying to get his father, Frank, to expand his business. Both the elder Mars and the younger Hershey had failed in their first couple of business ventures. But one of the more interesting stories about the Mars and Hershey chocolate companies is what the Ms stand for on the M & Ms candy. The two companies are bitter rivals. The Mars Company was run by Forrest Mars, while the Hershey Company was run by Milton Hersheys good friend, William Murrie, when Mars introduced M & Ms to the public back in 1940. It would make sense if M & M stood for Mars & Mars, which is what the Mars employees claim, but the truth is that one of the Ms stands for William Murries son, Bruce. So, in reality, the brand name of M & M stands for Murrie & Mars. Or Mars & Murrie. Why would Forrest Mars agree to name his hot new product after the son of the president of Hershey, his biggest rival? The two companies were once dependent upon each other. Forrest Mars, Sr., recruited Bruce Murrie to work for him, and it made sense at the time to offer to name one of the Ms after Murrie. Plus, Hershey helped Mars design some of its machines, and it was the vendor that supplied the Mars Company with its chocolate.

The heel-wearing men in the article I read cited boredom with mens shoe options, and they like how the shoes literally elevated them above the crowd. But they are woefully unaware of the hazards associated with heelwearing. This cannot go on. Because at this point no lawyer has stepped forward with the appropriate warning label language for mens high heeled shoes, I would like to offer my suggestions: WARNING! The Federal Reserve and Interest Rates in Your Life

This is the rate that banks charge each other for overnight loans of money from reserves that are held by the Fed. The free market actually sets the rate, but the Fed establishes a target for it. If the Fed is trying to boost economic growth, particularly during a recession or period of slow growth, it will lower the Fed Funds rate. If the economy appears to be growing too fast meaning that there is an increased threat of a serious inflation problem the Fed will usually raise the Fed Funds rate target to try to moderate that growth. Weve seen both types of actions happen on multiple occasions. For example in the early 1980s, the Fed raised short-term interest rates sharply in a move to help thwart what was a period of rampant inflation in the U.S. This move is credited by many with helping to break the inflation problem and set the economy on a path of steady growth tied to modest inflation. The challenge today has been quite different. The financial crisis that exploded in the fall of 2008 steepened the recession. Since December 2008, the targeted Fed Funds rate has been 0 to 0.25 percent, as low as it can be set. While the economy eventually regained some momentum, the rate of recovery has been so slow that the Fed has not adjusted its target rate since that time, and now apparently wont

We regularly hear news reports about a decision by the Federal Reserve (the Fed) to raise or lower interest rates or to leave them unchanged. Recently, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announced that the Fed would hold the line on interest rates it controls until the middle of 2013. The announcement of the Feds interest rate policy over an extended period of time was unprecedented. So does that mean the rates that have the most impact in your life will remain unchanged over the same period? The simple answer is no. The Federal Reserves interest rate policy can impact the rates paid on your interest-bearing accounts, bonds you may own or the rate you will pay on your auto loan. But the impact may be indirect as other factors can also affect how the market sets interest rates on other instruments. Comparing short- and long-term interest rates

By JoAn Smith, CFP

The Fed controls monetary policy, influencing the availability and cost of money and credit to help manage the direction of the economy. While the Fed has a number of tools at its disposal, one of its most powerful is control of the Federal Funds (or Fed Funds) interest rate.

before the middle of 2013. What the Fed cant control While the Feds stance on shortterm interest rates influences other interest rates, such as those on bonds or home mortgages, other factors can come into play as well.
