By Ronda Addy The 1950s saw the end of WWII and the start of many important changes, including the rise of the American economy. As GIs returned home to attend college under the G.I. Bill, American industry prospered now that it could supply goods that had once been unavailable due to the war. Along with prosperity, the 1950s saw a rise in conflict. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, the United States became embroiled in a Cold War with the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1991. On June 25, 1950, the Korean Conflict started as a civil war between North and South Korea, both of which were competing for power after the division of the country. The conflict escalated to include the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China in support of North Korea and the

for $1 million that year. Before he sold it, he had already discovered the opportunity that chocolate presented him, so he founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. His chocolate company was the first one to sell its products nationwide. Within a few years, he had built an entire town that would later become known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. Both founders Forrest Mars, Sr., and Milton Hershey had to get away from their fathers before they became successful. Milton Hersheys first two companies failed after his father interfered by trying to get the son to expand too fast. Forrest Mars, on the other hand, was kicked out of his fathers chocolate company when he interfered by trying to get his father, Frank, to expand his business. Both the elder Mars and the younger Hershey had failed in their first couple of business ventures. But one of the more interesting stories about the Mars and Hershey chocolate companies is what the Ms stand for on the M & Ms candy. The two companies are bitter rivals. The Mars Company was run by Forrest Mars, while the Hershey Company was run by Milton Hersheys good friend, William Murrie, when Mars introduced M & Ms to the public back in 1940. It would make sense if M & M stood for Mars & Mars, which is what the Mars employees claim, but the truth is that one of the Ms stands for William Murries son, Bruce. So, in reality, the brand name of M & M stands for Murrie & Mars. Or Mars & Murrie. Why would Forrest Mars agree to name his hot new product after the son of the president of Hershey, his biggest rival? The two companies were once dependent upon each other. Forrest Mars, Sr., recruited Bruce Murrie to work for him, and it made sense at the time to offer to name one of the Ms after Murrie. Plus, Hershey helped Mars design some of its machines, and it was the vendor that supplied the Mars Company with its chocolate.
look up and find its a man wearing those Louis Vuittons! Someone needs to do something. Clearly, these men have never spoken to women about wearing heels, and they face grave consequences if they proceed with this fashion choice. The heel-wearing men in the article I read cited boredom with mens shoe options, and they like how the shoes literally elevated them above the crowd. But they are woefully unaware of the hazards associated with heelwearing. This cannot go on. Because at this point no lawyer has stepped forward with the appropriate warning label language for mens high heeled shoes, I would like to offer my suggestions: WARNING! Wearing these heels will cause you to: 1.) Face-plant into the pavement; 2.) Walk with the grace similar to a disoriented newborn giraffe; 3.) Get hopelessly stuck in a sidewalk grate, which will make you face-plant into the pavement;
4.) Develop an attractive variety of bunions, corns, hammertoes, arthritis, ankle sprains, lower back pain and tendonitis; 5.) Sink into the mud (again, another face-plant opportunity); and 6.) Ruin any chance you may have had to sneak up on someone. Or get that job you wanted. Or go out with that girl. Ever. Men of the worldyoure welcome. I am happy I was able to offer this wisdom before the craze

We regularly hear news reports about a decision by the Federal Reserve (the Fed) to raise or lower interest rates or to leave them unchanged. Recently, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announced that the Fed would hold the line on interest rates it controls until the middle of 2013. The announcement of the Feds interest rate policy over an extended period of time was unprecedented. So does that mean the rates that have the most impact in your life will remain unchanged over the same period? The simple answer is no. The Federal Reserves interest rate policy can impact the rates paid on your interest-bearing accounts, bonds you may own or the rate you will pay on your auto loan. But the impact may be indirect as other factors can also affect how the market sets interest rates on other instruments. Comparing short- and long-term interest rates
before the middle of 2013. What the Fed cant control While the Feds stance on shortterm interest rates influences other interest rates, such as those on bonds or home mortgages, other factors can come into play as well. For example, longer-term interest rates are often closely tied to fluctuations in the cost of living. If the inflation rate should suddenly jump, chances are that interest rates on government and corporate bonds and on personal borrowing instruments (mortgages and car loans) would rise as well. History shows that interest rates tend to track on a path similar to the inflation rate. In fact, a sudden bout of inflation would likely cause the Fed to change its own interest rate stance sooner than 2013, which could contribute to a sudden upturn in longerterm interest rates. Another potential concern is that investors in U.S. government bonds, which are issued to deal with the nations debt, may start shifting money away from that asset class. If the demand for bonds issued by the

government declines, the yield on those securities could move higher. That was already happening in 2010, as the economy showed promising growth. But yields on longer-term government debt securities have declined again lately due to signs of slower economic growth and fears about the risks of another recession. A key point to keep in mind is that even though the Federal Reserve may be committed to maintaining a low Fed Funds rate for the next two years, it doesnt mean that rates on other types of instruments might not change between now and then. If you are considering buying or refinancing a home or locking in a CD rate for an extended period of time, remember that interest rates on most types of debt are subject to fluctuation independent of Federal Reserve policy.
