performed and read more often than ever before.

ABOUT THE PLAY

"Measure for Measure" is a satirical play written by William Shakespeare that
explores themes of hypocrisy, puritanism, and power dynamics. The play takes place
in Vienna, where the Duke of Vienna decides to leave the city and entrusts his power
to Angelo, a strict and moralistic deputy. However, Angelo quickly reveals himself to
be a hypocrite when he sentences Claudio to death for impregnating his fiancee,
despite having engaged in a similar act himself.
The play also follows the story of Isabella, Claudio's sister, who is about to become a
nun. Angelo offers to pardon Claudio if Isabella agrees to sleep with him, creating a
power dynamic that highlights the corruption of those in positions of authority. The
play ultimately concludes with the Duke returning to Vienna disguised as a friar,
exposing the hypocrisy and corruption of those in power, and restoring justice to the
city.
The play is a commentary on the moral hypocrisy of society and how it often leads to
the abuse of power. Shakespeare uses satire and irony to critique the puritanical values
of his time, while also exploring the complexities of human desire and the corrupting
influence of power. "Measure for Measure" remains a relevant and thought-provoking
play that challenges audiences to question their own beliefs and values.
