I. Contextual Analysis
Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (1892 – 1972). Fernando Amorsolo painted and sketched more than
ten thousand pieces over his lifetime using natural and backlighting techniques. His most known works
are of the dalagang Filipina, landscapes of his Filipino homeland, portraits and WWII war scenes. Born in
Calle Herran in Paco, Manila, on May 20, 1892, Fernando Amorsolo began drawing and sketching as a
young boy. The family lived in Daet until the death of his father. At that time his mother moved the
family to the home of her cousin, artist Don Fabian dela Rosa in Manila. Amorsolo was 13 years old at
the time and in order to help provide for his family, he sold his drawings and began to study art under dela
Rosa. Fernando Amorsolo was one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the
Philippines.
The painting shows three women namely Marcella Marino de Agoncillo (on the right side) refer
as the mother of the Philippine flag, with the help of Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad which is
actually the daughter of Marcela. They were tasked by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo to sew the first flag for the
new republic. The three women are sewing passionately which demonstrates elegance. The setting is
inside of a house which is commonly known as “Bahay Kubo".
The artist balanced his characters and the background in his painting which makes the painting
balanced. There are no real lines in the painting because it is painted in a pointillist style. The colors of
the author set the moods of the audiences as warm by the usage of brown and yellow colors. The yellow
background signifies that it a beautiful sunny day. The colors of the characters were also contrasted with
the background which made the painting calm as it seen. The artist shows rough texture in some parts of
the painting namely the dresses as well as in the backgrounds. The artist uses a different color values for
the dresses also to differentiate it from the background. That made the painting a realistic scene.
It is believed that Fernando Amorsolo made this painting to show the citizens of the Philippines
of how the Philippine flag was made and to remind them the traditions and customs that we did not realize
it becomes faded. This painting also shows how powerful and talented women in our country are. Women
are often discriminated and are set to fit the patriarchal standards. That women are born to be slaves of
men. This painting is just a proof that women can do more than what the society standards have set for
them.
It's thought that Fernando Amorsolo created this artwork to remind Filipinos of long-forgotten
traditions and rituals as well as to demonstrate how the Philippine flag was formed. The strength and
talent of women in our nation are also demonstrated by this painting. Women face prejudice frequently
and are expected to conform to patriarchal norms. that women are bred to serve as men's slaves. This
artwork is only evidence that women are capable of going above and beyond what is expected of them by
social norms.
1.5 Your Overall observation and Insights about the Painting .(This includes your observations regarding
the form, technique , and style used by the painter etc.
Fernando Amorsolo used natural light in his paintings and developed the backlighting technique
Chiaroscuro, Fernando Amorsolo made this painting to show the citizens of the Philippines of how the
Philippine flag was made and to remind them the traditions and customs that we did not realize had faded.
Considered one of the most significant works of art in the Philippines, The Making of the Philippine Flag
is a Masterpiece by Fernando Amorsolo. mostly because it represented our culture and displayed the
craftsmanship of our fellow Filipino ancestors.
The warm, vintage colors of this painting make it unique. The fact that we Filipinos are colorful
and vibrant but it took a lot to get us here leads me to believe that this artwork was intended to depict our
culture at the time. I adore how it shows the three women working together to create the Philippine flag in
a cozy afternoon-like setting, as if it were just another typical day for them. It seems empowering to me
that kids treat the flag like a simple piece of fabric they weave every day for fun.

Amorsolo also painted a series of historical paintings on pre-Colonial and Spanish Colonization
events. Amorsolo's Making of the Philippine Flag. His work on historical periods, especially his most
famous work in popular culture, Confeccion de la Standarte Nacionale or Making of the Philippine Flag
in 1955, has been frequently reproduced in commercial goods and has become a mainstay in Filipino
popular culture.
It's theorized that the thought behind this painting was that the piece was supposed to embrace the
calm colors of the painting and remind Filipinos of the traditions that we have in our history. The very
symbol of our country, the flag, and what we fought for as the three women were making it should never
be forgotten as it is in our roots that though we look calm, we fight a fierce battle for justice.
