Non-Fiction

Non-Fiction writing is based on actual events and facts. It includes accounts from real
people and details of real places. Fiction writing includes imaginary details, people, and
events. Nonfiction writing has text structures, including diagrams, photographs, and
captions. There are two main branches of nonfiction. Literary nonfiction is nonfiction
writing that tells a story and uses literary techniques to express ideas and entertain. As
a result of using imagery and other literary techniques, some literary nonfiction may be
confused with fictional stories. The main difference is literary nonfiction is based on real
people, places, and events, whereas an author makes up the people, places, and
events in a fictional text. Biographies, historical fiction, travelogues, and diaries are
examples of literary nonfiction. Informative nonfiction is writing intended to inform
readers of real people, places, and events. Examples of informative nonfiction include
encyclopedias, textbooks, newspaper articles, and interviews in publication. A writer can
structure their nonfiction writing to present details using text structures such as problem
and solution, cause and effect, sequential, compare and contrast, or descriptive.
 Biography

Biography is simply the story of a real person’s life. It could be about a person who is
still alive, someone who lived centuries ago, someone who is globally famous, an
unsung hero forgotten by history, or even a unique group of people. The facts of their
life, from birth to death (or the present day of the author), are included with life-changing
moments often taking center stage. The author usually points to the subject’s childhood,
coming-of-age events, relationships, failures, and successes in order to create a well-
rounded description of her subject.

Biographies require a great deal of research. Sources of information could be as direct

as an interview with the subject providing their own interpretation of their life’s events.
When writing about people who are no longer with us, biographers look for primary
sources left behind by the subject and, if possible, interviews with friends or family.
Historical biographers may also include accounts from other experts who have studied
their subject.

The biographer’s ultimate goal is to recreate the world their subject lived in and describe
how they functioned within it. Did they change their world? Did their world change
them? Did they transcend the time in which they lived? Why or why not? And how?
These universal life lessons are what make biographies such a meaningful read.

An autobiography is a written literary work that is in the form of a novel or a short story.
An autobiography is the story of the life of a person, written by that person himself, for
example, Mahatma Gandhis My Experiments with Truth.An autobiography can be
identified easily, as its written in the first person point of viewpoint, the writers, I, me,
and myself.

Autobiographies are usually written by those who have achieved great fame and
success in life. One often reads a successful persons autobiography to gain inspiration
from them. If its a scientist like Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, also a former president, his
multiple accomplishments would be in science and being a great leader.Its important to
scan through someones life story to find out the main idea behind it, in order to highlight
the important phases of ones life.

Beach,California. My parents were Eddie Smith and Joan Smith. Both of my parents are

By my sophomore year in high school Ihad begun to hang around with friends that got
me into a lot of trouble with a number of thingsincluding smoking pot and drinking. I was
rapidly heading down a negative path, but wasfortunate enough to notice it before I had

friends.
 Amanda L. Winter

My name is Amanda L. Winter. I was born on 17 March, 1983 in Lexington, Kentucky,

where I lived untilthe time I went to college in another state. I’m the fourth child and the
only girl in a family of five. My father, Mr. Paul Winter is a retired physician and he
currently runs a drug store within the city. My mother, Mrs. Beverly Winter was a
registered nurse working for various medical institutions across the state, until she
decided to retire in 2010. Nowadays, she helps dad run the drug store. I went to school
in Dixie School and Paul Laurence, where I completed my elementary and high school
education respectively. Then, I went to Kansas University, where I did my under
graduate degree in Journalism. Growing up around four brothers was not easy,
considering the fact that I am a girl. With all the masculinity in the house, there was a lot
of competition and rivalry. I had to be tough as my brothers or I would have been
toppled by their naturally aggressive nature. Not that we were a dysfunctional family, it
was just normal sibling rivalry and it turned to be of benefit to me.

Since I was the youngest and a girl, I was bound to be at the bottom of the totem pole in
everything. So, I had to be equally tough to fight for whatever was rightfully mine. As a
result, I turned out to be a tomboy and also built a reputation as a no-nonsense girl.
Furthermore, I had older brothers to protect me in case

of a dispute. I believe I adopted both my parents’ brilliant brains, because I was always
the best students academically. However, my abilities were not limited to the classroom
alone. I also excelled in sports. In high school, I was arguably the best female
sportsperson in outdoor games, especially in athletics and volleyball.

I have many accolades to my name, however the one that stands out was in my second
year in high school. Representing our school in short races, I went to the state
competition where I emerged third overall. I was not fortunate enough to win it, but it
was an eye opener for me to strive for greatness in life. Fortunate for me, I won the best
sportsperson award that year at our school’ award giving ceremony. While I was forging
a name for myself in the academic and sports circles, my social life was in a really bad
state. My tomboy look was making it hard for me to coexist well with either of the sexes.
The girls were scared of my tough persona, while the boys felt intimidated by my
confidence and competitive nature. My wardrobe was full of my brothers’ clothes that
they had outgrown. All the girlish clothes my mother bought for me, I had them piled in
the closet and completely forgot about them. When we went to the stores to buy
clothes, I would be with my brothers at the boys’ section. This disheartened my mother
and

she tried to advise me out of it, but I was just too adamant. Eventually, she accepted the
way I was. However, something happened in my life that sent me reeling back to the
foundations of my femininity. It happened during my senior year in high school. It was
the prom week and everyone was geared towards

the most important night of their high school life. Love was in the air. Young men were
gathering courage to approach girls they liked, while girls were torn apart whether to
accept or reject their proposals. All the girls had prom dates, except me. No one
approached me or even mastered the courage to look my way. It was one of the worst
days of my life. I spent the night with my mother watching my favorite movie to raise my
spirits up. As a result, I decided to embrace my feminine side. I got rid of all the male
clothes, started wearing dresses and released my hair. My mum really came to my aid
at this point in my life and although it was hard at first, I got used to the idea of wearing
dresses ad heels.

So, I began my college studies with a new form of rejuvenation in life. I decided to
pursue my college education far away from my hometown, because of the
misconceptions that I had been associated with for so long. I wanted to pursue
journalism as a career, because I understood the challenges and opportunities it would
expose me to and I love challenges. I have always wanted to travel the world and I
knew a career in journalism would offer me that. With a 3.5 GPA, I secured a spot at
Kansas University. During the first year of study, I met the love of my life Ken Rodgers
(not the singer, although he has the same deep baritone voice) and everything as they
say is history.

After graduation in 2006, I interned with the Kansas City Star for six months. I then
worked as a correspondent journalist with the Kansas City Globe Newspaper for a year.
We moved to Atlanta with my husband, after I secured a writing job with the Daily
Report for a year. At the time, he had a fitness vlog,

where he gave daily workout routines and healthy recipes to his clients Therefore,
moving from state to state did not interfere with his line of work.

All he needed was a camera and an internet connection. My biggest break came when I
was hired by the LA Times. The pay was good, I travelled around the world and each
day was exciting in its own unique way and offered new opportunities. Unfortunately,
the job was too demanding and more times than not I was away from my husband. I
quite in 2011, after two years with the newspaper giants. I had not quite decided what I
 wanted to do with my life, so I worked as a freelance journalist for a Canadian media
firm. My job was basically to capture hot showbiz news in Hollywood. It was an exciting
job checking into the fabulous lives of celebrities. I had no alternative, but to quit this job
also when my first pregnancy was due. It marked the last job of my professional career.
I decided to be a fulltime mum to my three lovely kids, Mathew, Sally and Luke. To put
my writing abilities into use, I became a permanent freelancer for various blogs and
websites. I have always thought of writing a book and I believe this is the right time. The
kids spend all the day at school and I have all the day by myself. I have not decided
which way to go with the book, however I’m thinking in the lines of romance and a bit of
suspense and action.
 Evan Cary

My name is Evan Cary. I was raised in a small rural town in New Hampshire that is part
of what’s known as the Upper Valley, a cluster of small towns and villages in both New
Hampshire and Vermont that are divided by the Connecticut River. The city of Lebanon,
like many small New England towns included in the “UV”, contains a rich history
deriving from its early colonial settlement and the presence of Dartmouth College. I
spent 19 years there before leaving to

attend Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. My relationship with the guitar began in
high school at the suggestion of my high school guidance counselor. I was lacking
enough credits to graduate, and was feeling disillusioned with

high school, my classes and American culture in general. In addition to the guitar class
at school, I began studying with Classical guitarist Ed Eastridge. From the beginning,
the guitar captivated and challenged me. In spite of my passion for the instrument, I
attended Antioch College as a Creative Writing major minoring in Musical Composition,
but found myself spending all my time when I wasn’t in class playing the guitar. In 2005,
a college friend invited me to come to visit Madrid Spain where I experienced Flamenco
for the first time. I had never

seen or heard the guitar played that way and I returned from the trip a changed man. I
tried to teach myself how to play Flamenco guitar by studying YouTube videos and with
other instructions I found online but came to the conclusion that if I wanted to gain any
real skill I would need to go to the source. I left Antioch in my Sophomore year, moving
to Madrid Spain in 2006 and my Flamenco guitar studies began when I started studying
with world-renowned Flamenco guitar teacher Aquilino 'El Entri' Jimenez. From 2006 to
2009 I studied under El Entri

at the Amor de Dios Flamenco academy, learning to accompany Flamenco song and
dance as well as perform solo pieces for the guitar. I admired the work ethics of great
guitarists like Paco de Lucia and would often practice six to ten hours a day trying to
'catch up'. When El Entri established his own Flamenco school, the Cañorroto
Academia in the famed 'Cañorroto' neighborhood, I moved with him and continued to
learn side by side with other up and coming Flamenco artists such as Joni Jimenez and
El Kilino. In 2010 and 2011, I returned to New

England to perform two summer concert tours, playing traditional Flamenco pieces
along with my own original compositions. Many of my fellow Flamenco students have
gone on to have successful Flamenco guitar careers but after only studying for a couple
of years I found myself becoming disillusioned with

Flamenco and my career as a Flamenco guitarist. The people I study Flamenco with
and who have gone on to have those successful Flamenco careers, all began playing
Flamenco when they were quite young. Some were as young as five years old when
they began. I was in my early 20s which meant that most of my fellow Flamenco
students had already been playing for 10 years or more. I wondered when I would be
'good', if ever, at playing these traditional

Flamenco pieces. I had two realizations that helped me formulate my decision to begin
moving in my own direction. One was that I felt a great need to perform my own music
and not that of others. The second was that I am not a Gypsy. And even if I learned all
the Flamenco techniques and played them perfectly I would never be able to feel
Flamenco music the way the Gypsy, also known as Roma, people do-as part of the
cultural history of the life and struggles of the Roma people. As a result, in 2008, I
began listening to more Classical music and began

composing my own pieces, being greatly influenced by Bach and Beethoven's

compositional structure. I felt that Flamenco lacked this more structured approach to
composition but I also felt that Classical lacked Flamenco's strong rhythmic base. I
decided to create a form of music that had both the rhythmic complexity of Flamenco
and the structural integrity of Classical. Thus, pieces such as 'Darkness Kept' and 'Last
Stars' were born from this desire to fuse the two musical styles, from a series of short
poems I had written around the same time, and my lifetime struggle with depression.
 Memoir

Memoir is a narrative, written from the perspective of the author, about an important
part of their life. It’s often conflated with autobiography, but there are a few important
differences. An autobiography is also written from the author’s perspective, but the
narrative spans their entire life. Although it’s subjective, it primarily focuses on facts –
the who-what-when-where-why-how of their life’s entire timeline. Booker T.
Washington’s Up from Slavery is an example of autobiography – the story begins with
his childhood as a slave, proceeds through his emancipation and education, and ends
in his present life as an entrepreneur.

we loosen the constraints of an autobiography. Memoir authors choose a pivotal

moment in their lives and try to recreate the event through storytelling. The author’s
feelings and assumptions are central to the narrative. Memoirs still include all the facts
of the event, but the author has more flexibility here because she is telling a story as
she remembers it, not as others can prove or disprove it. (In fact, “memoir” comes from
the French “mémoire” or “memory.”) In Night, the Nobel Prize-winning title, Elie Wiesel
tells his own story about one period of his life – how he survived his teenage years at
Auschwitz and Buchenwald.
 My Pursuit of Happiness

Actually, I started my pursuit of happiness as soon as I came into this world. My Mom
says that I was an extremely capricious baby – I could cry out loud for a rather long
period of time until all my demands were satisfied. A little terrorist, with large rainy eyes
and a loud voice, I was! Later on, as I grew up, I preserved my willingness to do
everything to get what I wanted, but I learned some new and more effective methods of
achieving my goals.

I remember that when I was 4 years old, I wanted to have a dog. Absolutely nothing,
even my allergy to dogs, could prevent me from making my dream come true…
 William Styron: A Life in Books

William Styron was a bold and brilliant novelist who left a lasting impression on the
world of literature. He published ten works in his lifetime, and four more of his writings
were released posthumously. Writing with a rich and classical prose, William Styron’s
books often dealt with tragedy and morality. While some of his works were controversial
(particularly the ones that transcended the bounds of his own personal experiences), his
literary canon is extremely influential, and his distinctive voice has made him an iconic
writing figure of the post-World War II generation.

Born in Newport News, Virginia in 1925, Styron’s southern roots inspired much of his
writing. Though he was deeply loved and well cared for by his parents, his childhood
was not without hardship. He lost his mother to a long battle with breast cancer when he
was 13 years old, and mourning was dangerous business as his father suffered from
chronic depression. These experiences perhaps lended themselves to the dark themes
inherent in Styron’s novels, many of which include references to suicide.
 A Revolution at School

The events of that sunny spring day turned out to change the course of history at our
school. I am proud of being one of the revolutionaries who drove the change.

The problem was our school uniform, which was more or less bearable in winter but
became a cause of students’ torture in spring because it was too hot.

This is why the girls from our class agreed to wear jeans instead of the uniform one day,
to show our protest against the silly school rule of wearing the uniform even when it was
too hot for it. We felt a bit scared before the beginning of the first lesson. Mrs. Stone,
our Geography teacher, had to be the first to see our silent protest
 Essay

Essay is a "short formal piece of writing.dealing with a single subject". It is typically

written to try to persuade the reader using selected research evidence. In general, an
academic essay has three parts: An introduction that gives the reader an idea of what
they are about to learn and presents an argument in the form of a thesis statement. A
body, or middle section, that provides evidence used to prove and persuade the reader
to accept the writer's particular point of view. A conclusion that summarizes the content
and findings of the essay

Essay is a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. There are many
different types of essay, but they are often defined in four categories: argumentative,
expository, narrative, and descriptive essays.Argumentative and expository essays are
focused on conveying information and making clear points, while narrative and
descriptive essays are about exercising creativity and writing in an interesting way. At
university level, argumentative essays are the most common type.
 My family

Family is the place where you learn your first lesson in life. Your family members are the
only assets that will remain with you forever. Whatever the circumstances, family
members are always there for each other to support us. Good values and good morals
are always taught in a family.

In the family, we are prepared to respect our elders and love younger ones. We learn
lessons consistently from our family, about honesty, dependability, kindness and so on.
Although I am a student in my final year, my family always treats me like a child but
always provides us with a sensation of so much love and care. My family is the best
family for me. I live in a nuclear family of four members.

My father is a teacher. He is the man who heads and leads our family. My mother is a
housewife as well as a beautician. She is a lovely woman. My mother is everything to
me. She is the one who understands me best and most closely. My grandmother is the
cutest person of all.

I love my family because they are the jewels of my life. They work hard so that we can
get anything we desire makes me love and respect my parents considerably more. We
play games every night and discuss various topics to spend quality time together. I give
deep respect and pay the highest regard to my family not just because they are my
family, but for their unmatched and incredible sacrifices for me.
 Christmas

Christmas is one of the most famous and light-hearted festivals which is celebrated
across the world by billions of people. People of the Christian religion celebrate
Christmas to remember the great works of Jesus Christ. 25th December is celebrated
as Christmas Day across the world. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the birth
anniversary of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ of Bethlehem was a spiritual leader and
prophet whose teachings structure the premise of their religion.

Christmas Day is celebrated every year with great joy, happiness and enthusiasm.
Everyone whether they are poor or rich gets together and partakes in this celebration
with lots of activities. On this day people decorate their houses with candles, lights,
balloons etc. People decorate Christmas trees on this day in their homes or a public
square. They decorate Christmas trees with small electric lights of various colours, gift
items, balloons, flowers, and other materials. After that, the Christmas tree looks very
appealing and wonderful.

People follow popular customs including exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees,
attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, obviously, trusting that
Santa Claus will arrive. Children eagerly wait for Christmas day very anxiously as they
get lots of beautiful gifts and chocolates. In most cases, the fat person in the family
dressed up as Santa Clause with a bell in his hand which attract kids and they get lots
of beautiful gifts and chocolates from Santa Clause. 25th December, Christmas Day,
has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.
 Health is wealth

The greatest wealth is our own health. A healthy body can earn great wealth but, a
wealthy person cannot earn great health. We live in a fast-moving world where
individuals have no time for themselves. Most part of their life withers away in search of
materialistic wealth in order to outshine others but, along the way, they lose their health.

Recent studies have shown that the increased stress of the present speedy life is
leading to various medical conditions. Major among those are heart and neurological
problems. Good health assists an individual to keep a positive attitude toward work and
life in general. Wealth matters, but, is not as important as health.

Spending lots of money on junk food in five-star hotels or on other entertainment

sources like watching films for a day and so on has no advantages other than self-
satisfaction. Being physically and mentally healthy helps an individual to be socially and
financially healthy as well. A healthy person can earn lots of money however an
unhealthy person cannot because of a lack of motivation, interest, and concentration
level.

Money is the source to carry on with a healthy life however good health is the source of
living a happy and peaceful life. So, everyone should take many precautions in
maintaining good health. Everyone should be away from bad habits and unhealthy
lifestyles. Being healthy isn’t only the condition of being free of disease, ailment, or
injury but also being happy physically, mentally, socially, intellectually, and financially.
Good health is an actual necessity of happy life and the greatest gift from nature.
 Documentary genre

The documentary genre has radically evolved in recent years and so it's not a surprise
that there may be some confusion about "what exactly is a documentary!". A
documentary is a broad term to describe a non-fiction movie that in some way
"documents" or captures reality.

Documentaries are often used to reveal an unusual, interesting or unknown angle.

Topics are limited only by one's imagination as you can see by this huge list of

motivated to make their films because they feel a particular story or viewpoint is not
being (adequately) covered by mainstream media.

Documentaries can be funny, poignant, disturbing, ironic, absurd, inspirational,

film scenes, photographs and/or sound of real people and real events which when
edited together creates a particular story, viewpoint, message or experience.

Traditionally, documentaries are 30-minutes to 2 hours in length (to fit within a television
schedule or for theatrical release). However, documentaries are often shorter in length,
especially with the growing popularity of documentary series on streaming sites such as
Netflix.
 How to do it books
