Quoting, Paraphrasing, & Summarizing Activities - Part 2

ACTIVITY ONE:
Provide an EXTRACTIVE Summary then an ABSTRACTIVE
summary of the following paragraph:
"John’s car broke down. He stopped by the road side and screamed at
people to stop and help him. But no one stopped for him. He continued
howling and howling for hours. People kept driving by. After getting tired,
he picked up a sheet and wrapped it around himself. Then, he started
spinning on his spot. He grew dizzy. He kept spinning and spinning until
he fell asleep."

ACTIVITY TWO:
Pretend that you are writing an essay on the importance of pre-reading
activities in enhancing students’ reading comprehension. While
researching, you come across the following passage extracted from an MA
dissertation (page 18), written by a researcher named: Henry Johnson, and
defended in June 2012

In order to develop better language learning skills for ESL learners all four skills are equally important.
Reading has its own importance to language learning. Many researchers showed that pre-reading activities
aids learners comprehending a text better.
Schema theory researchers showed greater importance of background knowledge for better understanding of
the text. There are many readers who face problems in comprehending a text because of insufficient
background knowledge. Question may arise that "Can we improve students' reading by activating their
background knowledge of the reading topic through appropriate reading activities?" Many researchers possess
a positive answer to this question. Research showed the significance as it discusses the importance of text
previewing activities for ESL readers because of the potential of cultural specificity of the text content. For the
lower level of English proficiency learners, meaning tends to break at the word level just because they cannot
associate meaning of the word with the context. It also showed that learners given with pre-reading activities
of pictures and discussion were able to predict what they would find in the reading text.

You decide to include a paraphrase and summary of the entire passage in your
essay. Remember that a paraphrase records all the important details of a
passage, and a summary condenses a passage to the main ideas.
1. In your own words, write the best paraphrase you can of Johnson’s passage.
Write a citation for your paraphrase.
2. In your own words, write the best summary you can of Johnson’s passage.
Write a citation for your summary.
3. Select part of the passage (that talks about the role of pre-reading activities)
to cite it in your essay as a direct quotation, then identify the type of the
quotation.
4. Purposely write a poor paraphrase and summary of the above passage with
poor quotations and citations, and make a short list of the characteristics that
make them poor.
