“Stop.” said the other. “I don’t want all that. Shall I succeed in my
present search or not? Answer this and go. Otherwise I will not let you
go till you disgorge all your coins.”
The astrologer muttered a few incantations and replied : “All right.
I will speak. But will you give me a rupee if what I say is convincing?
Otherwise I will not open my mouth, and you may do what you like.”
After a good deal of haggling, the other agreed. The astrologer
said : “You were left for dead. Am I right?”
“Ah, tell me more.”
“A knife has passed through you once?” said the astrologer.
“Good fellow!” He bared his chest to show the scar. “What else?”
“And then you were pushed into a well nearby in the field. You were
left for dead.”
“I should have been dead if some passer-by had not chanced to peep
into the well,” exclaimed the other, overwhelmed by enthusiasm.
“When shall I get at him?” He asked, clenching his fist.
“In the next world,” answered the astrologer. “He died four months
ago in a far-off town. You will never see any more of him.”
The other groaned on hearing it.

“Rub it on your forehead and go home. Never travel southward
again, and you will live to be a hundred.”
“Why should I leave home again?” The other said reflectively. “I was
only going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life

Q. 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below : (12 Marks)
At a corner of Sixth Avenue electric lights and cunningly displayed
wares behind plateglass made a shop window attractive. Soapy took a
stone and dashed it through the glass. People came running, round the
corner, a policeman in the lead. Soapy stood still with his hands in his
pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass button.
“Where’s the man that done that?” inquired the officer agitatedly.
“Don’t you think that I might have had something to do with it?” said
Soapy, with a friendly voice, as one greets good fortune.
The policeman refused to accept Soapy even as a clue. Men who
smash windows do not remain to chat with the police. They take to their
heels. The policeman saw a man half-way down the block running to catch
a car. With drawn club he joined in the pursuit. Soapy, with disgust in his
heart, drifted along, twice unsuccessful.
On the opposite side of the street was a restaurant of no great
pretensions. It catered to large appetites and modest purses. Its crockery
and atmosphere were thick; its soup and napery thin. Into this place Soapy
betook himself without challenge. At a table he sat and consumed beefsteak,
flapjacks, doughnuts and pie. And then he told the waiter the fact that the
minutest coin and himself were total strangers.
Q. 2. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below : (12 Marks)
“I don’t believe in taking the right decisions. I take decisions and then
make them right.” One of them make them right. One of Ratan Tata’s
inspiring words which made me dream beyond shadows. I feel fortunate
that I discovered him in the early stage of my life and now I am using his
teachings to mould my future the way I want.
Even though Ratan Tata was born in a very posh family of India, he
never took money and power for granted. He graduated from Riverdale
country from New York. Ratan Tata began his career in the Tata Group
working on the shop floor of Tata Steel. After working for almost
10 years he was appointed as the director-in-charge of the National Radio
and Electronics Company Limited (NELCO) in order to help its struggling
finances. He worked hard building a better consumer electronics division
but the economic recession and union strikes prevented him from achieving
success and this success helped Tata to be appointed as the Chairman of
the Tata Group of Companies. He started with a very basic job in his
father’s company and today he owns a billion dollar company.
The tag of greatness does not come without making any sacrifices and
this tag on Ratan Tata suits to its best.
Tata group launched its passenger car Tata Indica in the year 1998 but
Tata Indica was a failure in its first year and the experiment seemed to be
failing, Many people started advising Ratan Tata that he should sell the
passenger car business. Ratan Tata also agreed to this and a proposal was
given to Ford, they showed interest too. At the three-hour meeting at Ford
headquarters in Detroit, Chairman of Ford (Bill Ford) said to Ratan Tata,
“Why did you enter the passenger car business when you were not knowing
of it. It will be a favour if we buy this business from you.”
Ratan Tata decided to move back home. While travelling he was very
tense as the feeling of being insulted was on his mind. After earlier failures,
Tata Motors did well with its business of passenger cars but in the same
period, Ford did very bad. In 2008 when Ford was on its way of bankruptcy,

Is anybody happier because you passed his way?
Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today?
This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through;
Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?
Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along?
Or a churlish sort of “Howdy” and then vanish in the throng?
Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way,
Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today?
Can you say tonight, in imparting with the days that’s slipping fast,
That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?
Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said;
Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead?

Q. 3. (B) Appreciation :
This extract has been taken from the poem, “Have you Earned your Tomorrow”.
It is a thought-provoking poem. The poet Edgar Guest makes us ponder and find out
whether we have done something useful on a particular day. He urges the readers to be
thoughtful about the people around them.
The extract is simple and the tone of writing is optimistic. The poet asks the
readers whether they have done anything to improve the life of another human being or
not, and based on the answer, whether their existence for another day is justified. The
poem is full of questions, making the reader stop and think. Each question forces us to
ask ourselves if we are kind, thoughtful, unselfish and patient.
The rhyme scheme is ‘aabb’. The poet has used different poetic devices like
Alliteration and Interrogation to give beauty to the extract. The clear message of the
extract is : One’s life is meaningful only if it is useful for humanity at large. It is
an uplifting poem. We can take the message and begin implementing it in our life
immediately and every day.

Q. 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below : (12 Marks)
The young lift-man in a city office who threw a passenger out of his lift
the other morning and was fined for the offence was undoubtedly in the
wrong. It was a question of “Please”. The complainant entering the lift,
said, “Top”. The lift-man demanded “Top-please”, and this concession
being refused he not only declined to comply with the instruction, but
hurled the passenger out of the lift. This, of course was carrying a comment
on manner too far. Discourtesy is not a legal offence, and it does not
excuse assault and battery. If a burglar breaks into my house and I knock
him down, the law will acquit me, and if I am physically assaulted, it will
permit me to retaliate with reasonable violence. It does this because the
burglar and my assailant have broken quite definite commands of the law.
But no legal system could attempt to legislate against bad manners, or
could sanction the use of violence against something which it does not
itself recognize as a legally punishable offence. And our sympathy with the
lift-man, we must admit that the law is reasonable. It would never do if we
are at liberty to box people’s ears because we did not like their behaviour,
or the tone of their voices or the scowl on their faces. Our fists would
never be idle, and the gutters of the city would run with blood all day.

Fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.
Now I can see him getting off the train
Like a word dropped from a long sentence.
He hurries across the length of the grey platform,
Crosses the railways line, enters the lane,
His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.
Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,
Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.
He goes into the toilet to contemplate
Man’s estrangement from a man-made world.
Coming out he trembles at the sink,
The cold water running over his brown hands,
A few droplets cling to the greying hair on his wrists.
His sullen children have often refused to share
Jokes and secrets with him.
He will now go to sleep
Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming
Of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking
Of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass.

Q. 3. (B) Appreciation :
Father Returning Home
The poem ‘Father Returning Home’, by Dilip Chitre – a bilingual poet – is
about a lonely old man’s coming home from a long day at work. The poet describes
his silent and lonely journey home in the crowded Mumbai local train. It is a metaphor
for the father’s utter isolation even in the crowd.
The poet speaks of the ‘unseeing’ eyes on the scenery flashing past the train.
The man sees the same thing daily when commuting. There is nothing new, just like
his uninteresting life. The man’s dress and appearance are also metaphorical. His
soggy clothes and mud stained raincoat symbolize his wretched existence.
When the man gets off the train the poet compares it to a word falling from a
sentence. He goes unnoticed as an unimportant word dropped from a long sentence.
The simile powerfully conveys the man’s insignificance. The platform he crosses is
grey. The colour imagery stands for the gloominess or dirty surroundings.
The poet uses informal language and an easy style. The poet describes him as
he ‘hurries’ along the platform and again ‘hurries’ on to his home. This repeated word
shows his eagerness to reach his shelter and change his wet clothes. The overall
picture the poet portrays is of a shabby, pitiable but scholarly man. There is no rhyme
scheme. The poem is in free verse.
The second part of the poem is about the man in his home. The meal he eats
shows the poor quality as well as the careless way it is served. There is a clear
imagery for his loneliness at home also. The family offers no company after his long
day and tiring commute. He goes to sleep thinking of the remote past and the unknown
future, listening to harsh sounds on the radio.
The message is how the elderly are treated by their own children. The poem is
about a man who feels that he does not belong to this world – the man-made world
of materialism.
I feel sorry for such people who have worked hard in their life but the younger
relatives discard them once their use is over.

(1) Denham severely criticized the general pattern of PT and games. He said that the
space available for these was limited. He felt that PT was ill-conceived, pointless and
monotonous, and he could see no advantages in it; a good game was far better. His
idea was that PT exercises were only advantageous if practised daily and for more
sustained periods; PT twice weekly for twenty minutes was a waste of time. Only kids
who needed it could do it while the others could play football or some other game.
(2) ‘To Sir, with Love’ is an autobiographical novel. The narrator, though an engineer,
accepts the job of a teacher in Greenslade School. The school is full of unruly students.
The narration is in the first person, with a reflection of personal ideas and emotions.
The narrator has observed everyone and everything minutely. He comments on the
behaviour of the students and teachers; he feels deeply happy when his students do
well. His keen observation and the depth of the narration show us his involvement in
everything. He has written from his heart. All this proves that the novel is
autobiographical.

(1) Aouda had had a very difficult time in India. She was nearly killed by her persecutors,
but Fogg managed to save her and bring her to England with him. She was a wonderful
person and grateful for what he did. She was even apologetic for having delayed his
return – she did not think about the danger she was in from her persecutors! She was
very loving and self-respecting. She was not at all money-minded and was ready to
marry Fogg even though he did not have a penny to his name. She was a charming,
compassionate, kind-hearted and generous person! An admirable woman.
(2) Phileas Fogg has to go around the world in eighty days if he has to win the wager.
As he and his companions struggle to do this, time foils their plans in many cases.
Fogg gets arrested for no fault of his and loses precious time. He misses the train from
Liverpool, and the special train he arranged too gets delayed. Fogg is afraid that he
has lost the bet. However, in the end, Fogg wins the bet with seconds to spare as he
gained a day when crossing the International Date Line. His journey through the time
zones had gained him a day. The ultimate message is that no one can control time;
time moves on relentlessly, and humans are at its mercy.

Q. 3. (B) Appreciation :
W. H. Davies was a Welsh poet and writer. In his poem ‘Money’ he speaks of the
times when he had money and when he did not.
The theme of the poem is the effect of money on the behaviour of people. False friends
are plenty when a man has money. However, when one is poor one may have fewer friends,
but they are real friends. The poet has also noted that the lack of money does not mean lack
of happiness. The poor man is able to laugh while a rich man frowns; the poor man’s wife
is happily busy in her work.
There are many figures of speech like Simile, Antithesis, Onomatopoeia, etc. in the
poem. The rhyme scheme is ‘abcb’. Repetition of the word ‘money’ emphasizes the way
man gives money too much importance when actually it takes away our happiness. The
message is that money does not bring happiness. The poor are cheerful while the rich are
worried. I liked the poem, but do not agree with it completely. I feel that the poor today are
not necessarily as happy as the poet seems to think. They too have their own problems and
difficulties.
