Procedure:

1) Add 2-3cm of ethanol into a test-tube

2) Add some glass wool to soak up the ethanol – the glass wool keeps the ethanol at the
end of the test tube and avoids getting the Aluminium Oxide wet
3) Place some Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) about halfway down the test-tube using a spatula
– Al2O3 is a white solid powder
4) Light the Bunsen burner, set it to the blue flame, and gently heat the Al2O3
5) As the Al2O3 becomes hot, the heat reaches the ethanol, which vaporises, passes over
the Al2O3 and is dehydrated to ethene
6) Collect 5 test-tubes of gas and put a stopper on each once filled
7) Take the delivery tube out of water, then turn off the heat – this prevents suck-back
8) Next, we will perform various tests on these test-tubes of collected ethene, but don’t
use the first test tube of gas produced as it consists of displaced air
9) First, observe its appearance – colourless gas with a sweetish smell
10)Remove the stopper from one test-tube, place a lighted taper over the mouth of it -
burns with a luminous, sooty, smoky flame – (see combustion reaction below)
11)Tests for unsaturation are carried out next (see sticky notes below)

Bunsen
Burner

Safety precautions
Precaution Why?
Remove the delivery tube from the water To avoid suck-back of cold water entering the
before turning off the Bunsen burner hot test-tube as the sudden temperature change
(removing the heat supply) would cause it to shatter and crack or risk of
fire/explosion
Ensure stoppers are tightly fitted To avoid ethene gas escaping as it may cause a
fire if it gets in contact with the flame of the
Bunsen burner as it is flammable
Keep ethene gas produced well To avoid risk of fire as ethene is flammable
away/separate from the flame
Wear gloves when handling glass wool Our skin is sensitive to it so it may cause
cuts/burns. May cause irritation to eyes/skin
Wear mask and avoid inhaling glass wool May cause irritation to respiratory tract as it is a
lung irritant
Testing for unsaturation:

A reagent is used
The gas is bubbled through it // it is shaken in the test-tube with the gas

Bromine Water
Acidified Potassium Permanganate
Red (Yellow-Brown) to Colourless
Purple-Violet to colourless
Products: 1,2-dibromoethane //
2-bromoethanol

Use: Ethene is used for

ripening fruits e.g. bananas

Combustion reaction
Elimination // Dehydration
