The Power to Overcome Temptation

James 4:6-10
Part 6 of 10

If you are in Christ, there is no temptation you cannot

overcome by the power of His Word.

But here’s the requirement – you absolutely must have an

Alliance with God.

Mark Twain said…

“Temptation is easier to stay out of than to get out of.”

Mark Twain

1
James 4:6-10 (NIV)
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the
proud but shows favor to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you.
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy
to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

At the heart of human failure lies the embedded root of

pride.
From the moment Adam and Eve flirted with the notion of
being like God – pride was lurking just around the corner.

And while the focus of this sermon is not pride, it is worth

mentioning that pride is the primary factor that destroys the
vast majority of human relationships, including our
relationship with God.

2
Why is pride wrong?

1. Because it promotes our independence.

Pride severs the relationship we are to have with our

heavenly Father.
We were not made to be independent but rather, dependent
on God through an everyday relationship with Him.

2. Because it doesn’t know its own needs.

The person who harbors pride, does not understand that

his/her need of others.

3. Because it fails to give God His rightful place.

Pride says: Me first, God second.

3
Our Part:

Six things we must apply ourselves to.

I. Surrender to God.

James 4:7a (NIV)

“Submit yourselves, then, to God…”

In other words: Let God be “Número Uno”

Let him rule your life.

A non-submitted life means that there are areas that have

not been given to God.

If every compartment in your life is submitted to God, then

when you have a problem, in any area of your life, you can
pray and say,
“God you have a problem”!

4
II. Resist the devil.

James 4:7b (NIV)

“…Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

In other words – dont give him an inch!

1 Peter 5:8-9 NASB

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around
like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.9 So resist him, firm in your
faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being
accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world.

Robert Orbin
“Most people would like to be delivered from
temptation but would like to keep in touch.”

III. Become intimate with God.

James 4:8a (NIV)
“Come near to God and he will come near to you….”
5
Now, you and I can say to the devil "No, no," until you turn
purple - but the best way to resist the devil is to draw near to
God.

James Barclay says that: “the greatest privilege of all, access

to God.”

What is intimacy?
(Prodigal son as a backdrop)

1. Security. – “I am loved unconditionally.”

I am reminded of the prodigal son who wanted to come
home. He wanted to feel the security of being under his
Father’s love

2. Self–worth. – “I am important in this relationship.

3. Sensitivity. - “I want to sense and meet your

needs.”

4. Sharing. - “I want to spend time with you.

6
IV. Purify your life.

James 4:8b (NIV)

“…Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you
double minded.”

Biblical fourfold cleansing:

• Lips
• Hands
• Heart
• Mind

What role does being clean play in our fight against the
temptations of everyday life?

1. Cleansing of the lips.

Isaiah 6:5-6 (NIV)
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I
live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the
King, the Lord Almighty.”6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live
coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he
touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is
taken away and your sin atoned for.”

7
If you take a step back – this passage is derived from a whole
chapter – Chapter 3 – where James exhorts the church
about the dangers of the tongue!

2. Cleansing of the hands.

Psalms 24:4 (NASB)
One who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to deceit
And has not sworn deceitfully.

Proper worship of God requires clean hands.

Hands represent actions. You do things with your hands.

3. Cleansing of the heart.

Psalms 119:11 (NASB)
I have treasured Your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against You.

The heart represents the inner man and the thoughts and
feelings associated with it. You feel and think things with
your heart.

8
4. Cleansing of the mind.
James 4:8 (NIV)
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
(NLT reads… your loyalty is divided between God and the world)

If your mind is embedded with filth you will NEVER be able

to overcome tempation in your life.
You will be off course and out focus!

All of these cleanses deal with a divided life.

If we are divided in these areas, we will never make
the right choices concerning temptation.

V. Be sorry for your sin.

James 4:9 (NIV)
Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to
gloom.

The ESV says… “Be wretched and mourn and weep”

9
Not a sorry from the lips, but a true repentance that leads to
change.
Stop laughing it’s not funny James scolds his readers. Your
sin is no laughing matter.

VI. Live a humble life.

James 4:10 (NIV)
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

At the heart of our trouble with temptation lies the issue of

pride.

“Pride is at the bottom of all mistakes.”

John Ruskin

Why is pride a problem?

1. Because it was the first sin of mankind.

10
2. Because it makes us insensible to sin.

3. Because it takes us away from God.

We can't live in both worlds.

James 4:4 (NIV)

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the
world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a
friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
