Introduction:
Drainage is the natural or artificial removal of a surface's water and sub-surface water from an area with excess water.
However, it must be kept in good order to ensure the cleanliness of the water that flows. An effective drainage system allows for the
free flow of water and in many situations, it reduces the chances of the water building up and then reducing the chances of your
property flooding. Many drainage systems boost the chances of mosquitos breeding in the system because of the stagnant water in the
system (The Importance of an Effective Drainage System). Drainage systems are in place to remove waste water or extra water. If we
do not have a proper drainage system, it may lead to floods in the low-lying areas and hence causing damage to property and health. An
improper drainage system may also cause various kinds of disease and act as a breeding ground for various insects. (Drainage system)
Innovation is defined as the process of bringing about new ideas, methods, products, services, or solutions that have a
significant positive impact and value. It involves transforming creative concepts into tangible outcomes that improve efficiency, and
effectiveness, or address unmet needs. (Nick Jain, 2023) There are several concerns about the sustainability of drainage projects, and
there are water quality problems related to the disposal of drainage water. (Madramootoo) In an era of increasing climate uncertainty,
the ability to manage excess water effectively is pivotal to safeguarding lives, properties, and infrastructure. (WP drainage) The purpose
of this capstone project is to innovate the drainage infrastructure design and management in Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon.
Problem Statement:
The drainage infrastructure design and management in Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon present significant challenges. The
existing drainage systems in the area are insufficient to handle rainfall events effectively, resulting in frequent flooding, property
damage, and disruptions to daily life. Moreover, inadequate management practices and limited resources further compound the drainage
issues. These problems have detrimental impacts on the community, including property damage, health risks, and disruptions to daily
activities. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore innovative approaches to design and manage the drainage infrastructure in
Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon. This is crucial to address these challenges, enhance the resilience of the drainage system, and improve
its overall effectiveness.
Objective:
The main objective of this capstone project is to innovate drainage design that will help to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and
resilience. This involves implementing new technologies, sustainable practices, and intelligent systems to address challenges such as
urbanization, climate change, and water resource management in a more effective manner.
1. To identify the challenges and opportunities for scaling up and replicating the innovative drainage systems in other
areas with similar conditions and needs.
2. To assess the performance and benefits of the innovative drainage system in terms of hydrological, environmental, social,
and economic indicators.
3. To develop sustainable design and implement innovative drainage system
Methodology:
This research aims to address the unique challenges encountered in Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon. Its goals is to offer practical
and tailored solutions that can effectively enhance the design and management of the drainage infrastructure in the area. By doing so, it
seeks to minimize the occurrence of floods, mitigate climate change impacts, and improve overall resilience. The research will involve
conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the drainage infrastructure in Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon. This will encompass a thorough
examination of the existing drainage systems, identification of areas with issues, and documentation of the current state of the
infrastructure. Active participation and collaboration with local stakeholders, community members, and relevant authorities will be
undertaken to gain insights into their perspectives, concerns, and priorities regarding the drainage infrastructure in Poblacion. This
engagement will ensure that the proposed innovations are in line with the community's needs and preferences.
Expected Results:
The expected outcome of this capstone project is to innovate drainage design to enhance efficiency, sustainability,
and resilience in Poblacion, Santa Fe, and Romblon. This involves the application of new technologies, sustainable practices,
and intelligent systems to address challenges such as urbanization, climate change, and water resource management more
effectively. The assessment will pinpoint the specific challenges and barriers that may emerge during the scaling up and
replication of the innovative drainage systems. These challenges could include technical, financial, regulatory, or social
factors that need to be addressed. This will result in a comprehensive understanding of the potential hurdles and difficulties
that may be faced. The assessment will determine the effect of the innovative drainage system on water flow, water quality,
and flood management. Additionally, this will improve water management, reduce flooding, and improve water quality. The
implementation of an innovative drainage system can contribute to the effective management and control of water flow,
reducing the risk of flooding and waterlogging in the area.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, this research adds to the existing knowledge on the design and management of drainage infrastructure, with a
specific focus on Poblacion, Santa Fe, Romblon. The suggested innovations have the capacity to improve the performance, resilience,
and sustainability of the drainage system, leading to an enhanced quality of life for the community and a reduction in the risks
associated with flooding and insufficient drainage.

b. Financial Resources:
The study's proponents will use their own resources to pay for any necessary expenditures and fees related
to the research, using their capstone project report as collateral.
Transportation- Transportation fuel costs are projected to range from PHP 5,000 to PHP 20,000 per month,
contingent on travel frequency and distance traveled.
Food cost- A total of 15,000 pesos will be given to the research project team for meals and snacks during fieldwork,
conferences, data gathering.
Communication and dissemination cost- The amount of 5,000 pesos per month will go toward covering the cost of
delivering reports and other educational materials.
Miscellaneous- Setting aside a contingency fund of between PHP 6,000 and PHP 12,000 would be prudent in case
of unforeseen costs or little expenditures.
c. Limitations of time- The research paper will be conducted over the course of one year, from March 2024 to March
2025.
