DIRECT SPEECH – INDIRECT SPEECH

I. Turn the following sentences into indirect speech using the reporting verbs
suggested:
A. STATEMENTS
1. “Nothing grows in my garden. It never gets any sun.” (complain, explain)
2. “We are getting married next year.” (announce)
3. “I’m very sorry I’m late. The bus broke down.” (apologise, explain)
4. “I last smoked a cigarette five years ago.” (say)
5. “I didn’t see your brother at the cinema yesterday.” (deny)
6. “They were driving along the river at six yesterday.” (tell)
7. “He hasn’t answered any of the reporter’s questions directly.” (point out)
