23MTRN06I Individual Project
Objective
This project will provide an opportunity for you to employ the engineering methods learned
throughout the course module to solve a real-world engineering problem.
Description
Each student must individually select at least 2-3 physical variables such as temperature, pressure,
humidity, distance, acceleration, flow rate, fluid level, mass, force, torque, or vibration. You
may select any other physical variable of your choice. For your selected physical variable, you must
clearly define all its static characteristics.
Project list:
• Environmental Monitoring System
• Smart Agriculture Sensors.
• Health Monitoring Wearables.
• Vehicle Monitoring System.
• Robotics Sensors Integration.
• Industrial Process Control.
Project Phases:
1. Planning Phase (weeks 2 and 3):
• Define project objectives, scope, and requirements.
• Research and select appropriate sensors for different variables.
2. Design Phase (weeks 4 and 5):
• Develop a system architecture outlining sensor connections, data acquisition methods,
and data visualization.
• Design sensor interfaces and data communication protocols.
• Determine the hardware components required (microcontrollers, sensors, data
loggers).
3. Implementation Phase (weeks 6 and 7):
• Assemble hardware components and connect sensors to the microcontroller or data
logger.
• Write and test code for sensor interfacing and data acquisition.
• Conduct initial tests to ensure sensors are functioning correctly and collecting accurate
data.
4. Integration Phase (weeks 8 and 9):
• Integrate sensor data into a unified system for real-time monitoring.
• Develop a graphical user interface (GUI) for visualizing environmental parameters.
• Implement data storage methods for logging and historical analysis.
5. Testing and Calibration Phase (weeks 10 and 11):
• Perform calibration tests for each sensor to ensure accuracy and reliability.
• Conduct system tests to verify data consistency and functionality.
• Debug and refine the system based on test results and user feedback.
6. Documentation and Presentation (week 13):
• Create comprehensive documentation detailing system architecture, sensor
specifications, wiring diagrams, and code explanations.
• Prepare a presentation demonstrating the project, its functionality, and the process
followed.
• Present the project to the class, highlighting challenges faced, solutions implemented,
and lessons learned.
Deliverables:
• Fully functional system from the above project list.
Project assessment
The assessment of the project is based on three components.
1) A 8-10 page technical report (30%) detailing the following:
• theoretical background to your chosen physical variable i.e. the physics behind it
with equations, figures, charts, photos of the hardware prototype … etc.
• working principle of measurement tools for the variable i.e. how to do measurement
tools for the variable work
• selection of a specific appropriate sensor to measure the chosen physical variable
• signal acquisition and interfacing from the chosen sensor
• signal conditioning and control
2) Development of a physical hardware prototype (40%) to demonstrate the working
principle of the instrumentation system. The prototype is to include both the hardware
and the software. The main control algorithm should be done using LabVIEW software.
3) A 15-minute discussion (30%) in which you are required to demonstrate knowledge of
the working principles of your project and to explain your design and implementation.
