Course Description:
The Hematology course is designed to provide students with an overview of the clinical aspects
of disorders of the blood. This course incorporates and relates material learned in the basic
science courses, including histology, physiology, microbiology, immunology and pathology to
the understanding of the basis and clinical implications of blood disorders. Included in this
course is an introduction to common clinical presentations, differential diagnosis, treatment and
prognosis associated with blood diseases.

Course Objectives:
Hematology is the study of the effects of blood abnormalities on overall health status. By the
end of this course, you will have an understanding of disorders in each of the following
classifications of blood disorders, methods used to accurately diagnose these disorders,
appropriate treatment strategies, including pharmacological interventions, prognosis, and
approaches used in their long-term management:
Anemias
Neutropenia
Leukemias and other myeloproliferative disorders
Lymphomas
Disorders of hemostasis
Hypercoagulable states
Blood transfusions

Attendance. Your presence at a minimum of 80% of the Hematology lectures is mandatory.
The role will be taken on a daily basis. Failure to attend 80% of the lectures will result in
your withdrawal from the course (W), which will require you to repeat the Hematology
course.
Grading:
Your final grade is calculated on the basis of a single examination, which will be administered at
the end of the two-week course period.
Examinations can be postponed only for legitimate reasons including health problems or sickness
in the immediate family. Notification of an absence from an exam must be made in advance
by contacting the Dean of Students and the Professor of Hematology.
