Course: (3rd year) BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE Subject: Rizal's Life and Works

MODULE 1 ACTIVITY

1.) Why is there a need to study the life and works of Jose Rizal?

- Jose Rizal fought for our freedom from the exploitation of Spaniards on our ancestor many
decades ago. It was needed for us to study it and make an impression of Jose Rizal on our minds to
remind us that even we go on different places in the world, we should remember where we lived and
started from since we are carrying our culture and race. Also even here on the Philippines where we
stand right now, it is important that we’re not letting ourselves to forget him since it’s also relevant on
how and what we think on politics.

2.) Reasons why Jose Rizal was chosen and declared as Philippine National Hero.

- Jose Rizal fought Spaniards for our freedom by using knowledge. He communicated to our
fellow Filipinos by using his handbook and literacy, expressed his political views and fond for the
Philippines through novels and articles. Unlike any other national heroes, he didn’t chose the aggressive
way.

3.) Basis used by the Commission in choosing the National Hero.

- The Commission/Committee stated that:

Criteria for National Heroes

1. Heroes are those who have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle for the
nation’s freedom. Our own struggle for freedom was begun by Bonifacio and finished by
Aguinaldo, the latter formally declaring the revolution’s success. In reality, however, a
revolution has no end. Revolutions are only the beginning. One cannot aspire to be free only to
sink back into bondage.

2. Heroes are those who define and contribute to a system or life of freedom and order for a
nation. Freedom without order will only lead to anarchy. Therefore, heroes are those who make
the nation’s constitution and laws, such as Mabini and Recto. To the latter, constitutions are
only the beginning, for it is the people living under the constitution that truly constitute a
nation.

3. Heroes are those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation. (As defined by
Dr. Onofre D. Corpuz)

Additional Criteria for Heroes

1. A hero is part of the people’s expression. But the process of a people’s internalization of a
hero’s life and works takes time, with the youth forming a part of the internalization.

2. A hero thinks of the future, especially the future generations.

3. The choice of a hero involves not only the recounting of an episode or events in history, but of
the entire process that made this particular person a hero. (As defined by Dr. Alfredo Lagmay)

4.) What is the deliberative case why and why not publish or study the life and book of Rizal?

- Why?

To commemorate the youth towards Rizal’s hardships from his dedication to fight for the
freedom of our country, showing nationalism and for his devotions of modeling an embodiment of a
true Filipino.

-Why not?

Rizal’s novel was banned by the Spaniards and catholic churches due to the novel’s progression
that leads to manifesting oppression, desire for changes and inequalities.

5.) Who were the senators against in publishing Rizal Book and the major reasons why they do not want
to publish the book of Rizal?

- There are no senators who opposes, but there is a senator who supports the Rizal Bill. He is
Senator Claro M. Recto, who attempts to find ways to fund the bill. The main opponents are the catholic
churches which claims that it would ruin their freedom and the image of the whole organization to the
mass.

Reflection: What did you learn from the two deliberative issues between the two groups and what is
your personal stand about this issues?

Considering the fact that Jose Rizal did a lot for the sake of Filipinos, enjoying his sacrifices which
is the freedom from exploitations of Spaniards and claiming our lands since we’re the founders of this
lands. The future generations actually are indebted to him since without his contributions, maybe this
time we still can’t claim freedom and order to this country and possibly there’s still another country that
is exploiting our fellow countrymen and our precious lands. Even though the Catholic Church still denies
the past accusations, they’re still in debt to their past bishops/priests like how we Filipinos with different
generations is in debt to Jose Rizal’s life. And by paying his sacrifices to us, we tribute it by
studying/disseminating his life with commitment and making an impression of him to ourselves.
